    I am wondering why there is so much emphasis on aliens? How would anyone know what an alien would like or think unless you have met and communicated with an alien? How can I have a perspective of an alien if I don't know anything about an alien? You can't know someone's perspective without asking them what their perspective is.

    • @DeepDiveBooks
      @DeepDiveBooks Před 2 měsíci

      I think when Tyson talks about aliens, he means viewing human events from a third-party cosmic perspective. We don't know exactly how aliens would think, but we can assume that beings capable of interstellar travel, observing Earth from outer space, wouldn't care about our skin color or national borders. They would simply see us all as Earthlings. 'I also intermittently explore how we might appear to space aliens who arrive on Earth with no preconceived notions of who or what we are-or how we should be. They serve as impartial observers of our mysterious ways, as they highlight inconsistencies, hypocrisies, and occasional idiocies in our lives.' ---'Starry Messenger'

    Unclear how the need to interpret others' intentions leads to overuse then believing everything has a spirit. Isn't the idea that this skill is overused an assumption? If the human need to interpret others' intentions is inherent; i.e., hardwired, it could be just as possible it is finely honed as overused. The skill has evokved to enable human survival. How do we know the ancient peoples' interpretation of nature and spirit was inaccurate? It may be they were far more in tune with reality than they get credit for. This may be a little far out, but how do you explain Uri Geller?

But…nobody actually has a clue what consciousness is…let alone how it is created. If you put Sapolsky and every living cognitive scientist in a room they still couldn't even begin to explain how a single moment of human subjective experience occurs (...that's worth emphasizing: It's not just that they couldn't explain it...they couldn't even BEGIN to explain it). "the movement of things is determined by some inevitable laws, not someone's intention" God is the intelligence that created those laws, the blueprint. It was done with intention. Intelligence has intention. God is a name we use for Intelligent Design - that initial spark of Intelligence that started (and determined) everything. He is Intelligence Itself Nothing is random. Chaos is order yet undeciphered. God had all the free will in the world when he wrote the script for all our lives to the smallest details. He now lives through us, is us, us not knowing we are him. Separation is illusory. Look into advaita vedanta (non-duality). There are so many implications not even Sapolsky managed to figure them all out. Think about it, no free will (of the illusory ego) means there is only ONE WILL that governs all of us, and everything in nature. On will of the one intelligence. You are it. There are no mistakes. There cant be no mistakes. Everything goes according to plan. Everything is perfect. Everything is clockwork

      In my opinion,Dr Rober Sapolsky's point in writing the book seems to be denying free will in a biological sense.He said: Beyond all biological factors, you don't have a single neuron that is genuinely free. All your previous experiences have shaped your biological being, determining your current actions. To prove the existence of free will, you must demonstrate that there is some behavior beyond all biological attributes - and currently, nothing known in the scientific community can prove this.

    • @KRGruner
      @KRGruner Před 5 měsíci

      @@DeepDiveBooks But OBVIOUSLY, that is complete bullshit. Computation is NOT a biological phenomenon. And in any case: Sapolsky himself believes there is Free Will. He is unable (or unwilling) to go to the logical conclusion of his (idiotic) assertions. The laws of physics do not even address the concept of goal-oriented action, yet that is a basic FACT of human action> Physics CANNOT explain human behavior. Sapolsky is motivated by a POLITICAL agenda, namely Leftist collectivism. Nothing else. Science has nothing to do with any of this. His arguments are infantile. Shame on him for pushing this nonsense to make a buck and promote Communism (oh, the irony!)..

    The free market does not provide public sanitation, water supplies, fire brigades or free education to children. It does not provide police services, nor military defence of the country. It does not invest in vaccines, because they are less profitable than medications that may be needed repeatedly. The Hayek model is fine as a guide to where economic liberalism is useful, but dangerous when adopted as a panacea, or a cult like fundamentalist ideology as seems to be the trend in America currently, and as is well illustrated in this highly partisan video.

    The problem begins with your definitions of progressives and conservatives. One could equally say that progressives believe in democratic decision making and equality before the law, and conservatives think that power should be exercised by a small group of wealthy individuals in the interests of increasing wealth inequlity. The key question is this. Do you understand the science of climate change and agree that colective action is needed to counter it? If so, you are in one group: we could call that the 'progressives' if you wish. Or do you think that climate science is a politically motivated hoax? If so, you are a 'conservative'. We do not know for certain which group is correct. But we do know that this issue is the only one that matters in the long term. All else is deflection.

      I think saying progressives and conservatives can be determined by answering the climate question is crazy.arw you from the states where you only have republicans and democrats ? Basically how conservative of progressive you are, is an description of how fast you think the world should change. Extreme conservatives want no or very slow change. Extreme progressives will call for revolution. Change stuff yesterday not tomorrow. Extreme conservatism has a risk of stopping progress all together. To conserve the world the way it is now. Amish are extremely conservative for example. Extreme progressivism have the risk of tearing down the current world, without a prober replacement thereby creating powervacums and therefore chaos. Both are bad.
