Seems like almost yesterday I was too afraid to play this game.
To celebrate the game's birthday, here is an analysis video about one of the staples of Doom 3 - THE SHOTGUN.

    I’ve never had an issue with it. Then again, I’m all balls, no brains in games like this. I’m always just up in the enemies face going for it. It’s me or them, and I play very aggressively. I treat it like Quake 2. Always running and gunning. If reloading will take too long, sub machine gun. That’s how I roll XD Both games are even more fun with the full VR mods with motion controls. Granted you do need to use better weapons after a point, but they’re still effective for a good portion.

    If you're talking about damage numbers, you should probably contextualize with other weapons, enemy hp helps, but knowing how it stacks up to other weapons is important too. Knowing that each pellet does the damage of a pistol shot provides more meaning than flat out telling us it does 14 dmg per pellet. If we were talking about Borderlands and telling someone an endgame gun does 30K damage and 80K on a crit, that might sound like a lot until you find out damage is on the scale of millions.

    It's ok, personally I don't use it much but it's great again larger enemies and the ones that get up close, but honestly the plasma rifle is just the best thing to use in game

      @@anonimus370 If you thought about your statement for more than 5 seconds, you would have realized that it is too broad to be true. You and some other people who said a similar thing. Showcasing what can be done is a fun fact. It just shows you how effective the gun can be if you actually use it how it was meant to be used - super close range. It is not like I am doing some complicated glitchy save warping abuse strat that nobody would ever figure out. In that case, it would be irrelevant. I am just using the gun at its strongest. You don't need to speedrun to do that and see what I mean. It is through speedrunning that I played this game a lot and realized all these facts about different weapons and enemies, so naturally, I wanna use some examples from there. Most people who like Doom 3 and its shotgun don't speedrun the game, but they probably also like running up to demons and blasting them in the face from makeout range.

    "close range" if for weapons with a range between 5-25 meters. Doom's shotgun is a negative range weapon.

    I actually thought the shotgun wasn't that bad. It was easier to get to on a controller than the chainsaw, it has slightly better range and accuracy than the chainsaw, and unlike the chainsaw, it won't cause your controller to die faster due to the constant rumble. Maybe I just really dislike the 2019 console port. Would it have seriously killed them to include motion-based aim-assist a la Nightdive's Quake remaster, or a weapon wheel a la BioShock?!

    My favorite BFG of all time without question has always been and always will be the q3 BFG, which I think is a 10k. There's just no topping it. Granted, it's not really the room clearer that you get in the Doom games, but you never need to clear rooms in q3 so there's no reason for it to be. The problem with the BFG is it's always so chunky, has a long wind up and is super situational. It's really cathartic it you just want to blast a huge hole through a cloud, but again, situational. The q3 BFG is basically a vastly more powerful rocket launcher with no splash damage, one shots everyone, fires rapidly, and is just generally cool as hell. It feels like the biggest fuckin' gun, but without having to be a giant siege weapon you gotta wheel aroond with you and light a 10 second fuse to fire. Not saying I don't like flippin' the top off the ol' BFG button and entering in my secret code, swiping the keycard, and turning both keys at once to just completely level the place. That's still fun as hell, but it just can't compare to holding a rapid fire instadeath plasma bazooka in the middle of a deathmatch. That's not the fault of the 9k models, it's just that, well, nothing can compare to that.

    While playing ROE, I felt like I was crazy imagining the Super Shotty had a tighter spread. I felt like I was able to more consistently hit targets, but not just cause of the higher bullet count. I thought I was just crazy and that the Super Shotty much have just fired a lot more bullets than I was seeing, or something. It actually kinda surprises me it has a tighter spread. Even if it is just a bit. Personally, I play my personal simple modded version of D3, cause I just am not a big fan of the base game. And my design goes for a 12 degree spread, 8 damage bullets, with 10 bullets fired. With the SSG having the same base stats, but with 8 damage bullets as well. Theres a lot of other small tweaks I wanna make, and a lot others I did to the weapons and enemies. But I was barely able to do what I did, so I didn't go too crazy.

    Heh, reminds of a revolver I used in an MMO called Defiance. It was a very slow weapon, had no AoE, was mostly effective at close range and no one really used it. But it was REALLY good at one-tapping trash mobs during "world events". I would just walk from 1 enemy group to the other and basically dome enemies all by myself, requiring essentially no TTK. It was kind of a griefy weapon tho. Most players would basically "leech" by using meta AoE weaponry and just pepper enemeis with a few shots and move on. My revolver said "no" because I just deleted enemies all by myself, giving them 0 benefit unless they were there earlier than me. Still, it was fun. So even though DooM 3 Shotgun seems like a terrible weapon, I can understand why someone would use it so much and even genuinely like it, instead of begrudgingly using it as a speedrun tool.

    I like unreliable weapons in horror games, think it suits the vibe way more. Doom 3 definitely felt more horror focused with how dark and monster closety it played. There is more chances to panic during combat situations, rather than the player just reliably dispatching enemies the same way everytime.

    I came upon this vid shortly after rewatching Civvie’s video, and I gotta say I love this comprehensive yet succinct video for a gun I personally enjoy a lot. I learned the art of the quick-dash-n-blast and it made it a fun weapon as a casual fan. I love hearing great insights like this and how speedrunners use them, so I’d love to see more content like this, even outside the Doom games!

    It doesn't even work that well at close-range, as the spread still means you need more than one shot for enemies like imps and zombies. It's just a glorified melee weapon. Making it have a tighter spread at the cost of having 160 or 240 reserve ammo instead of 320 reserve ammo would keep it from being overpowered while also making it fun to use. Maybe making the spread 10 degrees instead of 20 and giving a slight damage nerf so it's not instakilling revenants.

    I feel like some of the guns issues would be solved by making the spread less horizontal, and more vertical (think more oval shaped instead of a circle). It would still force you to get very close, but would help ensure that you always hit a certain minimum pellets at some ranges. People stop using that shotgun because there's a chance you only a hit a couple of pellets at a (what a lot of people would consider sensible) range. When a weapon is both something you have to equip, and something that is unreliable, then people aren't going to want to use it. If it was an underbarrel shotgun attachment to the rifle, then it would be fine, but since you have to both equip it and get extremely close, it just isn't feasible for a first-time playthrough.
