Essential Prepping Items Most People Forget About
In today's video, I explore the essential prepping items most people forget about. Whether you're new to prepping or a seasoned survivalist, these often overlooked supplies are crucial for your preparedness plan. From automotive essentials like a tire patch kit, socket set, and jumper cables to proper footwear, I cover the crucial supplies you need to stay prepared on the go. I also discuss hygiene necessities, including how to manage human waste and maintain cleanliness to prevent illness.
Throughout the video, I discuss the benefits of each item, such as the importance of fuel storage for cooking, generators, and vehicles, as well as the peace of mind that comes with having cash on hand in case electronic payments fail. We'll also touch on the importance of keeping entertained during downtime, and the reassurance that comes with being prepared for personal health emergencies. And possibly the most important is the necessity of continuous education and practice to refine your survival skills.

    Good tips! We're on the Texas Gulf Coast, and we get the effects of hurricanes, regular storms, power outages from the heat, and winter storms. It's practically a given that Something is going to happen at least every year or two. Your think everyone in the area would have at least basic preps, but many do not. Many items that are useful in a power outage are also useful for camping, picnics, or tailgating. When purchasing items, think about secondary uses when making your selections. If it's in good shape and you have a full tank, your vehicle is a powerful generator. You can cool some down that's in heat distress, charge sneak devices, and with a modest inverter, ghi can run medium size items. I agree 100% in having some cash on hand. A store may still have power but no connectivity to process credit cards. Cash will work. Some smaller stores without power may still sell you items for cash. And you may need to buy items or services from some who will only accept cash. A couple of gallons of gas, baby formula, diapers, bottles of water, or some ice are all things that I've seen or heard were only available for cash. Conversely, during mass evacuations, some gas and diesel retailers will choose down, but leave their pumps on for credit card purchases. Even if a store is closed, check if their pumps are on it there's power in the area. But you'll need a valid credit card that is not maxed out. You might need a CC for a road side dinner on tie way out of a disaster area, or for a hotel. A cash tip might even free up a room when there are no official vacancies. In our area, cell service and regular cable/ internet often go down when we lose local power. We recently switched to fiber optic internet, and during our last power outage it still worked. But regular internet and cell phones were out. We were able to power up our router and TV for movie night. We could also send and receive email, make calls, and send text messages with an internet based phone line. Free: If you have extra space in your freezer, freezer drinking water. The extra cold mass will keep your freezer's contents cold longer, and you'll have refreshing cold water if you still don't have power after a few days. If you have time, you can freeze a lot of water, and then put the frozen jugs into coolers while you freeze a second or third batch of water. Then you have lots of extra cold storage and cold water.

    I try to keep my ford lightning charged to 90% most of tge time and normal charging comes from my 13 kw solar system. That gives me about 118,000 watts of power so using my on board 7200W generator I can run pretty much everything in my home including my deep well pump. My average daily kwh useage is about 11-12 kwh/day so that's approximately 10 days of which I'm sure to get enough solar energy to replenish my trucks energy.

    Here in the UK, we can get a small can of aerosol gunk that in the case of a puncture will pump gunk into the tyre that seals the puncture and semi inflates the tyre in an emergency. I also carry a spare tyre, jack and wheel wrench and know how to change the wheel on the van. I also have a backpackers steel mesh bag (pacsafe is the brand), that if I have to leave my bag in the van, the bag goes inside the steel mesh bag and the draw cable gets padlocked to a seat support. It wont stop a determined thief but it will deter a casual one. It would also work for those tugs that you have.

      I do also. We was without electricity for about 24 hours. And All we was getting is major winds. In fact when it went off. It wasn't even raining. So one thing I would suggest if you rent a house and the limbs are getting close to the power lines. Let the person you're renting from know so they can let the power company be aware . Then they can take maybe a hour to trim up the trees good. The only reason I am suggesting letting them know so they can't turn around and say I didn't want that done your out of here. It was limbs the knocked out our electric. Then it toke a long time for them to rebuild it all.

    @mrhalfstep Před dnem

    If you have the money to spend, one or two, again if you are willing to make the initial investment, of the DC refrigerator/ freezers makes a more efficient system when the power is out. A simple cigarette lighter socket connected to a very energy dense 12.8 volt 100 or 200 Amp Hour LFP battery will run one for days with no loses from inverting to AC first. If it comes down to it, you can plug it straight into your car and run it for a short time and then run the car to recharge its starter battery and not worry about damaging any component of the car. Emergency low voltage shutoff on the fridge will protect the battery and the alternator will hardly know the fridge is even there while the engine is running to recharge its starter battery. You can find YT videos that will show you how to use some small gator clips and an inexpensive buck converter to even let you use your 18 volt Ryobi (and other) batteries to power the fridge. They are easy to move, if you have to get out of Dodge (many have wheels and pull handles) and some spare quilts can be used to cover them to make them even more effective. Even the cheapest ones have the ability to refrigerate OR freeze to about -4F (think about how good actual hard frozen Klondike bars would be out on the pontoon boat) and the better ones have two zones that can be run at different temps. If you can afford two of them, one can be your freezer and the other your fridge, and it will be a chest style fridge, which is most efficient. I use mine to make ice most of the time for picnics and fishing/camping trips just so I get some utility until the world ends. I started with the setup that you are suggesting, but as I learned more and, as prices came down on the things I mentioned, I added them and haven't looked back. I also have portable foldable solar panels and other gear that will allow me to run on just solar on any sunny day, no battery required as long as the sun is shining. LFP batteries and 12 volt refrigeration is the way to go, once you can afford the outlay for the gear.

    I looked into getting a mini fridge a few years ago and realized that a full size fridge used about the same amount of electricity while offering a lot more capacity at 369 vs 329 kwh per year, comparing a $500 18 cubic foot fridge to a 4.4 cubic foot $200 mini fridge. For 4 times the capacity with about the same energy use and no need to move things over to a different fridge while deciding what items to let spoil, the full size fridge made more sense to me. Of course a chest freezer set to a refrigerator temperature would likely use even less power as others mentioned. I started out using a dewalt inverter that powers my fridge and standalone freezer using dewalt batteries for a few hours since I already had plenty of their flexvolt batteries. I have since gotten an inverter generator that plugs into an inlet on my circuit panel to run most everything on either gas or propane relatively quietly though you could start out using extension cords. I have wireless Acurite thermometers in my fridge and freezer so I can monitor the max/min temp without opening the fridge and it alarms if it gets too warm. This can be helpful if not using the generator 24/7 and I'm wanting to alternate between using batteries, having everything off, and then turning the generator back on as things warm up so I can run the fridge again, recharge batteries, and then go back to battery power.

    My 2 cents: Eliminate mini-fridge. Purchase a slightly larger chest freezer. Place a couple of 1 gallon water jugs into freezer. When they are frozen, move them to a yeti (or similar) high quality cooler for refrigerator type items (and meds). Rotate another couple of gallon water jugs into the freezer perhaps once or twice per day. If the freezer is taking advantage of solar, then put jugs into the freezer in the morning. Also, if you have a basement, keep the freezer and cooler in the basement to gain a bit of additional efficiency where it's cooler.

    Note that the fridge uses "watt hours" per day (as your meter shows), not "watts" per day.

    You're half right. Your use of a small chest is spot on, you're use of a small dorm refrigerator is wrong. Buy a second small chest freezer and hook up a Inkbird ITC308 Freezer Thermostat sold on Amazon $36. A small refrigerator loses most of it's cold air when opened, a chest unit doesn't. Convert a chest freezer to a refrigerator takes less energy.
