Your Anvil needs a Stand
zhlédnutí 11KPřed 6 měsíci
An anvil should be at proper working height. Most of the time that requires good solid stand. The heavier the stand the better, but for this little anvil I'm going to keep the stand simple and somewhat portable. Forging a Holdfast for the Anvil - Basic Blacksmithing
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 6 měsíci
A holdfast is an easy way to hold material at the anvil. I find the ideal size difference for the holdfast material is about 1/16" under the size of the hardy hole in the anvil Links for products, suppliers and supporting the channel may be found on the main channel page. #blacksmithing #forged #blacksmith Blacksmithing and related activities can be hazardous. Make the Size You NEED

Swaging round stock down by a 1/16th of an inch may seem silly, but the size is critical for the holdfasts I make. The SayMak power hammer with shop made dies makes the job relatively efficient. If we are travelling smiths, use both. Well done. Intrigued me, still pondering.🤔
Nice 😊
We’re do you get thin steel rods like that? I am putting together a forge and I need something like that to practice on
Don't you still have zinc off-gasses to worry about?
Stripping the zinc in an acid bath prior to forging removes all of the zinc so there is nothing to off gas. Another option is to start with unplated bolts.
Здесь, на севере Московской области, приходится отапливать кузницу 6 месяцев в году, зачастую круглосуточно.
Great project! And nice guitar selection too...
Your thumbnail answered my way to tie in my anvil. I was originally thinking straps. But not now, chains bolted in and wrapped over will both deaden the noise and hold it in place. 🚶🚪🦕 genius Thanks
John, you’re the reason I now have a forge and anvil. I’ve wanted to get into blacksmithing for years and now I’m almost there. Thanks for the great content!
What kind of disk are you using on the angle grinder?
How do you make it food safe?
I would love to do blacksmithing. Maybe one day. I would love a shop tour. I subbed for more. 😅
i agree
looking shmick
It's not a hammer, it's a wedge.
Nooooooooo!, your anvil MUST be aligned north south horn pointing north, set at midnight on the winter solstice then bathed in the blood of a virgin!
Spot on
You are right about not being worth it to burn that stuff off. I breathed in a lot of heavy metals in Iraq and my lungs are almost all scar tissue. I cannot breath well and I do not tempt it with anything. I even leave things soaking in vinegar or acid outside to avoid the fumes - either stripping a finish off plated items or etching Damascus.
Use the round hole for the head making part. That way you don't have to remove the cut off tool. I'm interested in how you made the head making tool. My first attempt kinda worked. Will try tomorrow when sober LoL
Quick question I just started blacksmithing and we started with making a letter opener. Whenever I make the square taper it always becomes a fish mouth. I was wondering where are you exactly hitting the metal so I can prevent fish mouths. I was also told not to hit it when its cold.
Love work
I really enjoyed this!
Table saw?... is a hammer
Sitting here and minding my own business and still remember this lecture and can't forget about it AND i'm not even a blacksmith 😂
I know I've seen this, but seeing it a second time gave me some new ideas.
Hmm, but my anvil doesn't have a horn :P
Or use a wood/coal forge....
Awesome
I wish I had a way to getting this craft I've always wanted to get into metal working more into the knife making ..
Like this guy, always seems to give good practical advice learned from experience .
Look at that anvil
Your so cool dude
"AND MY AXE!!!"
nah. ill hit lixie brass hammers with a hammer. helps to get the strike position nice and precise.
Thank you for a most interesting video, thankfully without an superfluous commentary. One thing I don't understand: why not use the header over the pritchel hole, so eliminating the step of taking out and returning the hardie? Just a thought. Cheers.
What sort of steel do you use for your chisels/ set tools?
I use a lot of S7. But any steel you're comfortable working with will get the job done
@@BlackBearForgeII thank you. At the club where I smith, there are some of these made of less than desirable steel and all bent up from use. Nothing lasts forever, but this S7 does appear to be a better suited steel for this application.
Simple
It’s sharp, clean, amazing
Dual welding hammer perk
Double whistle!!!!!!!!!😂😂😂
Bit late to the party, but I just bought one of these anvils and it rings like a bell. I'd need hearing protection if I was going to work on it as is.
The silicon used to adhere it to the block helps considerably
will you adopt me and teach me the old ways thank you for your videos
They're phenomenal machines! I can melt a pound of steel in a No. 1 clay graphite crucible... that's kinda the upper limit as far as I've seen though. It has no issue melting 350g.
Thank you for your video.
hope this comment is one you see with your morning coffee. Thank you for your videos i am going to be getting into smithing here soon and your videos have been a great help.
I'm curious as to what steel he put in the cutting edge. Obviously, it's something with more carbon..
I generally use 5160
@BlackBearForgeII Thanks for replying! I'm a new hobbiest smith and new sub. I love your content, and so do the other guys in my group.
Very concise, informative, and engaging video. Thanks alot.
It’s crazy how easy it is to learn from you just from watching.
