I think a large portion of the blame has to go to the instrumentalisation of education. The notion that education should only exist to serve as a means to end, jobs. Thus we donot value skills like critical thinking and logical fallacies. That is an unfortunate reality of having an insane population and thus I don't know if this problem can be even solved. But i want to go a step further. I am form nepal and I have observed this here but based on indian pop cultural import (movies, social media) I think this also applies to India. I'd love some thoughts. Warning for nascent opinions. I do not have single word but I see a problematic phenomenon is our people: a lack self esteem, self worth, self respect, being small in your own ego. Something along those lines. I do not know the cause but when you see it when a south asian interacts with a white guy or the rabid celebrity culture. And more recently the weddings. People seem to need a *extrinsic* thing to feel "seen" and have a sense of purpose. People should not need a thing for self esteem, its should be intrinsic. I don't know if it was always the case but religion seems to be this "thing" in our culture. And so criticizing anything related to religion and traditional practices are taken as a personal attack. You see the desperate attempts to justify religion, for example "tilak are scientifically good because they are heat radiators". Like.... what mate?? Its not even about the unsound argument, if you do not have a adversarial affect someone: do what you want, you shouldn't feel the need to justify it. But due to the aforementioned lack of self esteem and religious tie ins, any attempts to challenge the adversarial aspects are met by ad hominen and slander. Now here is something controversial. People understand things like alternative medicine are trash, but will not acknowledge this because as these practices come from religion and religion gives them a sense of purpose, they will loose this purpose. Or weaken it significantly. As I said these are just my opinions based on anecdotes. Would love to hear if they match/describe anyone else experience or have a better explanation.
