Hi Chris. I just bought a KR2 built by Dick Koehler. Are you still flying in the Bay Area (Nut Tree)? If ever you had free time I would love to come up and have a look at your KR. I am in San Carlos (KSQL).
Yes! I still have my plane at Nut Tree. You are welcome anytime.
That's the Nut Tree. I learned to fly at the old Travis Aero Club and kept my first airplane tied down at the Nut Tree 35 years ago. I recognized the hills when you were taxiing out! Cool video. Watch out for C-5s and C-17s. (they're are hard to miss)
Nice job on the build
Your numbers are mph instead of knots?
Yes
If your control surfaces are balanced it will go a lot faster . My KR2 went about 230 mph while pulling about 3.5 Gs on a pull out .
That thing sounds mean ! Definitely reinforces my decision to build a Corvair
You won't regret it
Buongiorno, anch'io sto costruendo un kr 2 super e vorrei mettermi in contatto con voi per condividere consigli e opinioni a riguardo,
Hello, I too am building a kr 2 super and would like to get in touch with you to share advice and opinions about it
Hello, I would like to get in touch with you, I too am building a kr and I would like to share details and advice. Thank you
Vr6chrisvw@gmail.com
Thanks for sharing, really inspiring. Any recent news from your build?
I have my forward fuselage kit and have made progress. I also have a wing kit on the way. Life has been a little busy lately, and that's why I haven't made any updates.
You still building the Panther?
Yeah, just behind on videos.
That Corvair sounds awesome!!
Where could I get a set of drawing or plans for one of these?
Plans for the KR are no longer available. The freebird plans are in work to fill this gap.
Love too watch these KR1 & 2’s, I was former pilot lost health. I is so great to see Ken Rands still going strong. I personally knew Ken Rand & Stu Robinson in Huntington Beach CA in 70’s. I miss him a lot he opened doors for Experimental Aircrafts.
bro that airport . you gona use all ya gas just gettting to the runway .. lol
Chris, with your diameter prop, your tips are going beyond mach and wasting power at the RPM's you've mentioned. Keep your diameter but add more pitch - enough to slow your tips down to 3100 (cruise). This will get you better speed and fuel consumption. You can research this to verify - don't take my comment as written in adamantine.
I don't know how you think that is the case. My prop tips aren't even close to mach even at redline
@@vr6chrisvw Do more looking into it. I'm not good at argument. If I find a reference for you I'll post it.
I don't argue. I speak facts. At 3600 rpm and 0 degrees Celsius, my prop tip speed would be .78 mach. Which like I said, I don't cruise at. I agree that more pitch would be more fuel efficient, I have a prop with more pitch already, I took some pitch out to improve climb performance at gross weight and get the same cruise speed.
In my experience you are way too worried about aft CG issues. Tail-first landings are the only price to be paid to be heavy in the rear. Advantage is one cruises faster. Important not to stall in an aft-CG config, but then that's probably why you're so concerned. Did you know Dan Heath is a two-plane KR builder who has built a Panther? czcams.com/video/a-AA0rpHrEo/video.html
My aft CG testing was to confirm I could safely handle the airplane heavy, with a passenger and make a safe landing in an emergency. It was a methodical approach to reach what I consider a safe envelope while carrying another life in my hands.
@@vr6chrisvw I know. Everything you've done has been methodical and well-considered.
Nut tree?! I need to come see this someday!
Yep! Visit anytime
Hi Chris. I am from Argentina. Amazing how simple the installation is. I have made a KR2S with the RAF 48, but with a 2-foot wider horizontal tail with the Langford design. I am beginning to fly it. The plane is wonderful in the air, but I still have some trouble landing it. In your video you have what it seems to be an Astro Link from Levil, running the tablet in the middle. Do you use it? Does it perform well? is your tablet Android based? My instruments are pretty basic so far, and I am planning some upgrades.
The ilevel works great with my iFly 740 which is the tablet you see. It works great to give information to my dynon instruments. I back it up with my cellphone running the iFly app.
@@vr6chrisvw thank you for your kind answer. I look forward to seeing more of your excellent KR videos. Regards from Buenos Aires.
Super clear and concise. Now I just need a Corvair motor...
My KR is a '77 and still has the retracts. Aquired it in '92. I found it disassembled in the corner of a large hanger covered with 1/8 of dust. Then added wing tanks, built new engine, new electric wiring, new radios and instruments for IFR. It's back in my shop for work and glass panel add. Planning on a spring roll out.
Chris, I also have a KR2 and I also restore vintage cars as a hobby so I have a pretty decent amount of experience doing body work and fiberglass. I think you stated this on painting the wheel pants but, prime my initial primer with only true 2 part epoxy. the reason is many. Its waterproof and no other primer is, it will bond to any surface including steel, aluminum and fiberglass composite. Then I spray a filler primer and sand out any pin holes as well as do all finish long board sanding to get a good flat surface. This may require an additional spray coat of filler primer in areas and another sanding. Then, I spray the epoxy sealer primer. Each finish coat of primer is finished with wet sanding to 600 grit. then base color and clear. I have never had a paint failure, fish eye, paint delamination of any kind. I use only epoxy paints in the last 20 years. I prefer PPG Deltron and also Sherman Williams Automotive Ultra 7000 or ATX.
Chris, any chance I might be able to check out your Panther project sometime? I am right on the cusp of ordering a tail kit and I would love to check out somebody’s project before I do. I tried to PM you through CZcams awhile back. I’m up at KGOO. Thanks!
Absolutely! You are welcome anytime.
@@vr6chrisvw That would be awesome. What’s the best way to get a hold of you to set a time up? If you are fairly close to KVCB, I could fly my airplane down and ride my bike over.
You can email me at vr6chrisvw@gmail.com. I have my other plane at KVCB and live real close. I can pick you up.
@@vr6chrisvw Great, I’ll get a hold of you soon.
Is a near perfect finish an aerodynamic necessity? Does it bring more than 3mph increase in speed? Or is it more an esthetic thing and professional approach to the work?
Magic moment 🤩
Pinholes are ideal vortex generators 🤣
Hello Chris, I just bought one here in Italy and I’m trying to got as much info as I can. Just a quick question how many horse power your engine has? So cruise speed it’s about 170 mph right? Thanks for the info.
120 HP. I can get 190 mph down low and usually cruise up high around 170 mph
@@vr6chrisvw thanks Chris love your videos I’m just wondering what cruise speed I can have with O200. Thanks for the answer.
Should be about the same
3 hour flight video yes please!
Chris, I was wanting to know how the engine is working?, I have a KR2S with a turbo engine like yours,i have alot questions for you inspire us all.
Working great so far. About to hit 200 hrs on the hobbs. Oil analysis shows nothing abnormal.
Nice update.
Chris are you flying the hole flight with full throttle?
Yeah. My throttle doesn't come out until I want to descend.
So, oke, I do 45% throttle position in criuse flight. You are sure this 100% is oke for your engine?
Yeah, my redline is 3600 rpm. In cruise I see 3200-3300. 188 hours on the hobbs with no issues and oil analysis shows normal wear like all the other flying Corvairs.
@@stephkr2412 Chris apparently operates his KR just as I do mine. I control power with fuel consumption/altitude, not throttle (unless I'm staying down low for some reason). Full throttle at 10.5 or 11.5 (or higher) renders only 55% power (more or less) WOT.
Great to see it works. Next Year I will install the a/p too. At this moment I will take some friends in the air and they play the a/p😀
how much would that cost if u were to sell it
KRs tend to sell less than what they're worth. I can't put a number to it.
idk how im just now finding this channel this is amazing content. the 2 things i love most Flying, and tinkering with stuff. perfect
Welcome to my crazy world.
Very cool! Dynon avionics are very appealing to me.
Nice work, I have a project kr2/s but my set of plans is not complete, do you know where to get plans, I'm interested both kr2 and kr2s plans. I asked krnet posting list but no luck there.
Original plans are no longer being produced. You may have some luck finding a used set from someone on the KR mailing list. There is a current movement to create a new free version but that is still in it's infancy.
@@vr6chrisvw Thanks , I try mailing list again. Do you know if this free version is accessible online, I would like to participate creating it if some help is needed.
I may part with some
That is awesome Chris... Great job. I am looking forward to using my Dynon autopilot as well. I will be configuring it tomorrow,. I will be using the AP74 to set my heading and altitude, so looking to see how that will work... One question, which radio do you have? I just got my new 2 1/4" TQ Aviation radio.
My radio is a flightline 760. The only thing I don't like about it is that a radio transmission overrides my intercom so I can't talk to a passenger when someone else is talking on that frequency.
Very Nice👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Chris, I’m just wondering…. For filling in pin holes, I wonder if you sprayed a wet coat of primer/filler on the pant and quickly covered it in a plastic bag and vacuumed the bag.
On the wheel pants, I used glazing putty to fill the pinholes. On the plane, I used smooth prime. The other method that works well is the epoxy method.
SOUND ON! When do you install the guns? :-) Good to see you out playing Chris! Congratulations (AGAIN)!
Is that an air fuel ratio gauge on the right? Wonderful airplane! The visibility looks amazing which is sometimes rare over the cowling.
Yes. It is an Innovate wideband O2 sensor
Do you run unleaded fuel? I've always wondered why there couldn't be a simple gauge like that installed on any aircraft to help with leaning.
I've only run 100LL since it's the same price as premium fuel here.
@@vr6chrisvw Do you think it will foul your o2 sensor?
I have gone through a couple O2 sensors in the last 160 hours.
Based on the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, what performance increase do you anticipate with the upcoming new engine?
All the speed
I really enjoyed this :) thanks for posting. I'm having trouble finding any info about the G limits and if the plane is capable of any gentleman aerobatics. Are you able to do any loops, rolls, or spins in this?
The G limits are a little old and based off of a gross weight of 980. That being said, I have bigger spars and other things. I have done aileron rolls and could probably do more I just don't.
The KR2 was rated at 6 G up or inverted at 800# Its a very strong airplane . But of course its not a factory built so each build varies. As for spins I have spun my KR2 many times . But make sure you have a forward CG and spin training. As for the KR2S I would get more information from the Kit Provider .
A fellow named Sam Bailey from Pratt, Kansas built three KR's and used one of them to do a full aerobatic routine at airshows. +9 -7 are the numbers on my KR-1½. There's never been an in-flight structural failure with the KR designs.
@@mikestirewalt5193 With a standard construction its supposed to be 6 gs upright and inverted at 480#. Most are 700 to 750 . Mine was 660# empty.I think the airplane will stand more that you will want to experience . I tested mine in 45 degree accelerated stalls and it maintained altitude down to about 40 kt with a probable pitot tube stall completely manageable. But in a mush do not apply 75% power or it will snap into a spin.
Hi Chris, excellent video, I learned more about this beautiful CORVAIR engine and its KR2s, thanks for providing this valuable information. good job
Thank you
Awesome video Chris... good job
Thank you.
Thank Chris I appreciate the info! I like the speed you get. I probably need a little more gross weight. I want a good fast traveling plane for me my wife and baggage. If it was just me I’d go with the KR 2s if I could get one already built. Thanks again!
No problem! I appreciate the request and support.
Sweet bird and nice video! Noticed your Stratux...I've got one just like it.
Very nice KR2S! I would love to see a video showing cruise speeds and fuel flow for cross country. Maybe data on gross weight and baggage capacity. Thanks for making the videos you have done so far!
Will do!
Awesome video Chris... I love it "this airplane does not like to slow down" that is just too cool.. Cheers from Dallas
Too bad you dumped on our friendship.
?
Great patterns. Great audio. How is your audio setup?
It is a go pro audio adapter. I believe I got it from sporty's pilot shop.
