400% Microbore 3 Port Buffer Tank Heat Pump
A buffer tank microbore heat pump set up explained. Here a 3 port buffer tank microbore system achieves 400% efficiency. The debate on buffer tanks, are they necessary requirement or a detriment to the efficiency and hence an extra cost to your heating system?
There was also the issues of a heat pump with a 1980s microbore heating system. Is it necessary to rip out and replace the whole heating system?
Heat Pumps and all reduction in heating costs starts with understanding the home's energy needs/heat loss requirements. Which installers, System design for your home. The buffer tank dilemma. I had hoped from some recognition (verbal or written, not monetary) that things had gone wrong. KIa HQ said its a franchise and we can't do anything. I don't believe that for one minute. Can you imagine McDonalds HQ the burger people, saying that about a franchisee. Also Kia Wessex never tried to contact me, discuss what went wrong. I gave them ample opportunity. I decided to publish it because I felt I had a wider duty of honesty to people buying Kia and in particular that Kia dealership in Newport. So sad. If they had dealt with the issues honestly I would have mentioned them briefly with the successful conclusion and not posted everything.

    Pump power is a key issue - what is the make/model/power/pressure rating of the pump used in this system? I have a 16 radiator system fed by 8mm microbore. My ASHP circuit operates using a primary pump/large bore primary circuit to a low loss header, then a secondary pump to large radiators via 8mm microbore which, on return, bypasses the LLH to join the primary return circuit. In the 6 months Oct'23-Mar'24 my SCOP was excellent at 4.2, but I'm still open to suggestions that there could be further improvement with a direct one pump system.

    • @hughrattray9354
      @hughrattray9354 Před měsícem

      The heat pump is a Vaillant 7Kw which is capable of 9Kw output at -2C. The maximum pump pressure is 80KPa, the maximum flow rate is 1200ltrs/hr and the minimum flow rate is 650ltrs/hr. I managed to find a copy of the pump curves. What are the figures for your secondary pump? How have you measured SCOP? The data from my Vaillant heat pump overstates COP by quite a high margin so I use the data from the open energy monitor instead.

    • @lumbarsupport
      @lumbarsupport Před 28 dny

      @@hughrattray9354 Thanks! Pump pressure is a little confusing. 80KPa is 0.8 bar but my primary pump has a max pressure rating of 10 bar which seems like way more than enough to feed the whole system while barely breaking sweat! I wonder if it's possible to calculate the theoretical pressure drop across a 16 rad/8mm microbore network?

    • @hughrattray9354
      @hughrattray9354 Před 27 dny

      @@lumbarsupport I did work out the pressure drop through my system using John Cantor’s tools for pressure drop (details are in the video notes). He has a very handy tool that allows you to vary flow rate and pipe diameter. The pressure drop across the radiators is very low (0.2kpa). I calculated the overall pressure drop across the system to be 20kpa. I have 22 rads and 10mm microbore.

I also assessed the heat loss using the "Heating Degree Day" methodology and in-room calculations based on the construction and window thermal conductivity values. The CH Circulation Pump is pulling far too many watts, it’s set too high or running too high. I suspect the poor circulation on the Microbore system is causing this. Or you’re getting a short circuit via the Buffer. 10mm Tube is very limited in Heat Carrying Capacity, particularly on Low Temperature Systems. It limits you emitter sizes & will struggle to achieve the correct Delta T on the CH circuit. Also you’ve fitted TRV’s - that just more resistance for the CH circulation pump. With a high flow rates required for all of the above, my guess is the CH circulation Pump is wasting lots of energy.

      There are two good examples of microbore systems working well on this channel. One with a buffer tank and the other without. The key issue is to make sure you have adequate flow rate. Both the systems here have 22mm backbones with 10mm radiators plumbed in parallel to each radiator.

      @@hughrattray9354Not really the most important thing, 10mm has a limited Heat Carrying capacity, so it’ll limit the size of the emitters. Which for a Low Temperature system is not good. It had the expected fan noise outside near the unit but my feeling was that they had done something wrong inside. How noisy is your system inside? Perhaps compared to the water pump noise and pipe expansion noise of a gas central heating system.

Because the flow temperatures don’t change a lot I don’t even get the ticking noise due to thermal expansion. I think there must have been something wrong with the installation you visited. Just a question as I understand it the dno does not stop you fitting more panels they want to restrict your peak supply to the grid to whatever you have permission for? If that is the case you can install more solar and have more battery including perhaps dc connected batteries then store more, import even less and export over more hours than you do at present?

    • @hughrattray9354
      @hughrattray9354 Před měsícem

      The DNO now restrict how much you can export and this must be implemented by a G100 compliant limiter but they are also now restricting your total inverter capacity. They will count the inverters for your solar system and also the inverters in any AC batteries you own. I am not sure why they are restricting total inverter capacity. You can implement as many DC batteries as you like.

      Most of the old radiators were either Type 11 or 21. To achieve the power output they all became Type 22 (apart from the towel rads in the bathroom) and we used taller rads (in every room we had space for this). Aside from some tidying up of the pipework around the radiators they all fitted into the same width. The maximum output from any rad is 855W.

Interesting that the boost in cop is only 0.2 with an extra 5C outside temperature I'm beginning to see why some people rave about the efficiency benefit of not over sizing the heatpump, the ability to run continuously at a lower output being significant. I wonder if in the future we will have better inverters or other methods to allow an even greater range of continuous outputs: the ability to never have to cycle on and off seems like a good way to even further improve the cost benefit of heatpumps over any other heating system.

      I am not sure if EVs are any good for towing. I haven't noticed one towing anything. But you make a good point about how they are charged compared to a fossil fuel pump where you drive through. What I like about EV charging, is ther is no special trip to the pumps, as you just charge the EV while it is parked and you are getting your coffee. No canopy - well I just plug it in and walk away, I don't have to stand there holding the fuel pipe as with a fossil fuel pump. But, I fully accept EVs aren't for everyone.

      @@JamesRattray But you'll still get wet plugging the car in, if it's raining. I would say the majority of times that people fuel their cars, they don't need a coffee because they're not stopping With EV's you don't have the option. EV owners do have to make special trips to charge their cars, especially if they don't have home chargers but also because EV's generally have half the range of ICE. When you're filling up your car with fuel you're holding the fuel nozzle for maybe 2 minutes, max. That's it. Probably less time than it takes to walk for your coffee. But I fully accept that ICE isn't for everyone.

    • @JamesRattray
      @JamesRattray Před měsícem

      @@alunjones2550 Speaking as a relatively new (18months) EV owner. I don't see the need for a canopy, it literally takes a few seconds, may be a minute to 1. Put charger in to the vehicle's charge port. 2. Swipe my credit card at the chargers credit card reader and walk away. Job done. Regarding your comment that most cars don't need coffee breaks. How long do you drive without a break? For me I like a break after 2 to 3 hours of driving, for a pee, a cup of coffee, may be a bite to eat and a stretch. Driving to and from Scotland from South Wales which I do two or three times a year, I leave the house with a full charge, giving me a range of just over 200miles, roughly 3 hours driving. I pull in to a motorway services and park the car as everyone else does, whether EV or not. The difference is I park it in front of a charger, plug it in and set off to use the facilities. The rapid chargers means the car is charged in about 40minutes or so. We often find ourselves scrambling as the car is charged, to get out of the charger bay to set off for the next leg. For instance, two weeks ago we drove 350 miles with one stop from Scotland. The ICE range versus EV is only critical if you drive longer than 3 hours or you drive where your stop over has no charging facilities. I would question the value of having an EV if I didn't have home charge facilities. With Intelligent Octopus it cost 7p per kWh of charge. Most domestic customers pay around 30p per kWh. EV's get this rate as they charge overnight when the National Grid has low demand. Most cars spend more time parked up than on the road. When staying with family and friend who don't have chargers, I use the 3 pin plug from their house. I put a meter on so they can see I am not draining the house of all its electricity. Electricity is everyhwere unlike fossil fuels. My brother, (which you can see in a separate video) said he anticipates the cost for running his EV (doing about 10,000 miles), his home lighting cooking and heating his house (just installed a heat pump) will cost him £300 a year. He has 18 solar panels and house battery. I believe this coming autumn, after he has run his heat pump for 12 months, he will do another video showing it has actually costs him nothing. There is a revolution going on that most people seem to be unaware of. I have driven ICE vehicles for over 50 years. I would not go back to one, driving an EV is just another level of ease, so simple. Thank you for this discussion and you raise some excellent points.

    • @alunjones2550

      @@JamesRattray For 95% of people, 95% of the time, they're not doing 2-3 hour journeys on a regular basis which is why you do not need a coffee break when charging or fuelling up your car. EV's are without doubt, the future but I am a chartered engineer and would not dream of buying one any time soon as the battery technology is woefully short of where it needs to be, the EV charging infrastructure is very poorly designed, unreliable, too expensive and too disparate in its charging structure. Finally. The "revolution" that most people seem to be unaware of is not a true revolution. It is an enforced revolution due to government mandated legislation change and nice cushy tax breaks for company car users. There is still grave reservations by many people "who by the way, are aware of the revolution", that EV's are not as good as they're alleged to be. This is why the demand for EV's has softened and the resale value of EV's has plummeted. It's the people buying 10, 15, 20 year-old EV's who will be the true arbiter of whether these cars are any good and I personally have very little faith in that being the case, but thanks for the discussion.
