Ah yes, so many memories lol. Remember coming to this mall a lot when I lived in Alamogordo. They used to have a Kmart as one of the anchor stores when I lived there. If you wanted the good stores you either had to go to Las Cruces or El Paso. But yeah it was either Kmart or the "mall", Hastings, or Walmart (they also built another shopping plaza next to the Walmart and there was a GameStop there). There was a movie theater too in the mall when I first moved there as well until they built the Aviator 10 theater. Saw the first Avatar in 3D in that theater so that was cool. Good times lol

That's crazy to think we still have that Motorola razr today in 2024. It came a long way from looking like that to being a smartphone model that it is today. Just think shoppers back then at that mall were shopping for the Motorola razr and shoppers today at your local mall right now 2024 can still shop for that same Motorola razr smartphone edition 4:10

Realizing this must of been the mall I had to run into to buy a new pair of jeans in 2000. I was visiting the area for the week working for my cousin's hydrogeology consulting business. My job for that week to tromp around the woods in all random places as safety backup for the actual geologist working for her (way before cell phones actually had coverage). Tore my jeans to bits plowing through brush. Walked into the store with destroyed pants, walked out in the pants I bought and asked them to throw away the old ones. This was completely novel for the girls working there.😆

I tend to watch more of Dan Bells videos from 7-8 years ago. Why? To get a last glimpse of what shopping malls were like when the malls were still open and had a few stores still open. It’s sad that smart phones didn’t exist in the 80s and 90s because there is woefully scant footage of these malls back when they were thriving. You needed an actual video recorder back then and they were expensive and cumbersome. Most of the footage you can dig up from the 80s and 90s are either from old commercials or still photos. Nobody did film recordings of a mall back then in the form of a documentary of the mall. I suppose it’s because back then nobody contemplated that malls would be dying en masse one day. If there was a mall near where I lived that wasn’t a pain to get to I would shop there, but that isn’t the case. The closest mall for me is 30-40 minutes away. Not because of distance but because of traffic. So I don’t shop at my nearest mall because I don’t wish to spend half the day just to do that. Online shopping isn’t what killed malls. Horrible planning by state and local governments allowing roads going to the mall to get too congested is really what has killed them. Americans simply have less time and money than they did decades ago. People have moved away from congested areas and thus away from malls. Media blaming online shopping is a cop out and cover for irresponsible and corrupt local and state governments as well as cover for corporate America shipping American manufacturing jobs overseas. They’ve given Americans no choice but to either shop online or get cheap crappy products from their local Walmart.

In 2017 I was doing a contract job in Washington DC and lived in Alexandria, Va. I had seen Landmark mall from the highway going past it and it looked huge so I thought I’d go check it out. I had not seen any dead mall videos at that time and was completely unaware about how malls were dying all around the nation. The only place open was the Sears and the rest of the mall was closed. I was absolutely shocked. This huge mall right off a busy highway in a densely populated Washington DC area that was dead. It was absolutely surreal and this was when I first became aware that malls were dying. It was a bit depressing. I was hoping to see a big beautiful mall. I didn’t understand how this could happen.

Whenever I'm struck by the nostalgia bug, I watch the Dead Mall series. Kind of my heralding into spring and summer. Abd speaking of ferling nostalgic, I'll never forget driving down the road and hearing the announcer on the radio saying Wards woukd officially be no more. When they mentioned that MW had been in business for over a century, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Surreal moment.

In 2019, following the property's demolition, it was rumored that Amazon planned to develop a distribution facility on the site of the former mall. On July 22, 2019, a statement was issued by the city of Akron that Amazon had officially acquired the land. Construction on the new distribution center began in September. Approximately 1,500 jobs were to become available when construction was completed. The center opened on November 1, 2020.
