Original Release Date : May 15, 2015 Mountaineer Mall Morgantown WV UPDATE : Mountaineer Mall is open mostly operating as a business park with very little retail inside. Fun to visit.
The Restaurant with the wood façade was a Lums, it closed in the early to mid 80s, briefly there was another restaurant there called The Golden Ram. The First closed restaurant on the left was a Pizza Inn. The Store with the cool windows (where the Art Association Gallery is towards the end of the video) was a Brooks Fashions.
Seeing that senior center in there is an awesome idea. They should turn these malls into senior villages where it's safe for them to live in apartments/condos, walk around, shop, go to the doctor, etc., all in one enclosed place. Seniors have money! Plus they're used to the mall environment.
That would be a wonderful idea but investors don't see "huge capital or profit" in Senior citizens....it would be great if we could put people 1st before capital, but it'll never happen...
Whenever I'm struck by the nostalgia bug, I watch the Dead Mall series. Kind of my heralding into spring and summer. Abd speaking of ferling nostalgic, I'll never forget driving down the road and hearing the announcer on the radio saying Wards woukd officially be no more. When they mentioned that MW had been in business for over a century, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Surreal moment.
I've been to that mall many times. It's about an hour or so from me. The "new" mall on the other hill kind of killed it. Enjoying the remastered series. That automated people mover runs all of the WVU campus. It was going to be built in Pittsburgh and was called Skybus. But, that was shot down in the 70s. I think the restaurant was a Lums.
The people mover is called the PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) and operates like a horizontal elevator--small self operating cars; passengers board and push button to select their stop. CURRENTLY OUT OF SERVICE because of Covid restrictions.
You enjoyed what you were seeing because they kept it clean and personable. That senior center is a nice touch, and the condition of the flooring and furniture is just plain fantastic.
the mall has the Mon County Model Railroad Society now. I can never seem to remember to visit but they're fun people who make some cool ass railroad sets.
My friend went to WVU from about 2009-2012 and when I visited him in 2010 he showed me and our friend this mall. It was great! My first ever introduction into the concept of a dead mall still being open.
The 1987 addition brought another anchor, Wheeling WV based Stone & Thomas department store! Elder-Beerman bought out privately owned Stone & Thomas, and for a time Morgantown had two E-B stores, one at each mall. Something to note that even today Mountaineer Mall is beautifully maintained, The floor and fixtures sparkle!
What a lovely mall, love the skylight/light and fountain. You can just imagine the hustle and bustle in it's day before Christmas and in the summer. Great video Dan with the 70s effects to give the atmosphere and the 80s too.
This is my second dead Mall video I watch from your channel. ( I had never watched dead mall videos ) and I totally dig how you make your videos. I am officially into dead mall videos all thanks to you lol Great videos Dan! 💯🙌
Love the vintage scratch up look....Takes me right back to my carefree/childhood days when we would watch those 8mm educational movies in elementary school, very comforting 😀 I think that red and white stripped store front was and early TGI FRIDAY'S Restaurant....
actually it wasn't, it was a restaurant called Lums, I grew up in Morgantown after the Lums closed I don't recall any other restaurant ever being in that space.
It’s kind of odd. In the ‘80’s a mall was a place to go for entertainment and socializing. Today it’s a place to go for nostalgia and exploration - ‘urbex’ - but it’s _still_ a place to go!
The Huntington Mall still has some incredible 1970s and 1980s flooring, fountains, lighting, etc. Its still a functioning mall, although I'm not sure why.
Gabriel Brothers also used to be in that huge front where there was the brick wall with the lanterns. Not sure who was there before that though. Of course Gabes also moved above the Morgantown Mall way back in 2006.
the small place next to the restaurant was actually a small frozen yogurt stand, the restaurant itself the last I remember was some sort of Italian pizza and pasta place but that was 20 yrs ago since I lived in Morgantown.
I legit live in Morgantown and that place has been empty for years!! Come back and bring Rick and let’s hang out and go back 🤣🤣🤣 there is some sketchy hotels here too! Lol
I'm rather impressed that its been dying for such a long time, but...its clean, has power, theres no big leakage from the ceiling like other malls you've shown.
Morgantown doesnt have a subway but that isnt a subway its a PRT. Personal Rapid Transit. Morgantown was the test city for this tech in the 80 and they deemed it a failure. It still stands and is regulalry used by the large university here to get between the two campuses. Its esentially like a single car monorail but the cars have tires and drive along the narrow bridge structures using an algorythm. You select where you want to go like an elevator and it sends a car to you.
if you look into it you'll find out it was actually the great Chinese roadkill Cafe, no joke they got caught bringing roadkill into the restaurant kitchen and using it it their food.
Amusing at your calling it "The 1975 Section"...much like as if you are a museum guide saying "This is the Cretaceous Period Section". Also noticed that few or none of the business park offices have their company names showing.
Great video Dan! I remember those windows! I just can’t place them. For some reason I am associating it with books or cards? I might be wrong. I am thinking that I remember them from Security Square, Mall.
At 8:15, can someone tell me what store this was? We have a store front in a local old mall with the same shaped window / entrance area. The space is not used but the front is exactly the same.
I have been wondering about those cool wood windows since you did the Frederick Towne Mall. My childhood Mall. Did you ever confirm if they were Brooks? Could it be Paul Harris? I believe Paul Harris was the first store in that location of the Frederick Towne Mall and only one of two at that location. I could not find a picture of a Paul Harris store that looks like that however I found an article that said Paul Harris was able to cut its $150,000 construction cost in half by trimming such elements as hardwood floors, paneled-wood treatments when opening new stores. Could this solve the mystery? Thanks for the great Videos!
I never understood why remodeling is so important to customers if it's clean and safe. I'm interested in which stores are in a mall and the merchandise. I can't even tell what is 1970, 1980 or 2020 style but then I'm not an interor decorator.
Too many of the malls around my new neighborhood are too dangerous to walk around, local gangs have the run of the place. I pack for protection, but they all ban weapons on premises, my state law enforces the “No Weapons” house rules of businesses, so I can’t bring protection into those malls (not even pepper spray).
Lum's ? Was that a steak house ?
I'm glad there's someone out there documenting these malls while we still can.
Seeing that senior center in there is an awesome idea. They should turn these malls into senior villages where it's safe for them to live in apartments/condos, walk around, shop, go to the doctor, etc., all in one enclosed place. Seniors have money! Plus they're used to the mall environment.
My parents are seniors and they’d never live inside a dead mall lmao. Sounds depressing as hell
@@Camquarters well it wouldn't be a dead mall anymore LMAO obviously they'd transform the mall o.0
Been saying this for years
That would be a wonderful idea but investors don't see "huge capital or profit" in Senior citizens....it would be great if we could put people 1st before capital, but it'll never happen...
Yes! Also add a daycare so the seniors could interact with children. Maybe a humane society too! Seniors could volunteer to help with both!
I love revisiting these videos. My god, this place was an absolute time capsule.
Probably my favorite of the series besides Schuykill, and this is BEAUTIFUL in 4K.
Dan Bells videos are honestly the best dead mall videos. I can never get enough of them!
❤️ malls: very sad they are dying think Meijer & Walmart & Sam club & Costco replace indoor malls: sit down & eat & shop

Dan so funny’ leave a message in the section box’ 😂
This is so relaxing. I’m home with a migraine today…. watching dead mall videos, and it actually helps me to feel a bit better. Thanks 😊
The "subway thing" is the PRT for the University. It is great for making one late for class and makes amazing snowball target.
And good for stopping occasionally.
Dan, this bell shaped storefront was “Brook’s Fashions” a chain of ladies Miss stores. Enjoy your videos!
You enjoyed what you were seeing because they kept it clean and personable. That senior center is a nice touch, and the condition of the flooring and furniture is just plain fantastic.
this was beautiful! very 70's mall era, love it :)
My personal life has been Hell the last few days but these videos made me smile. Thank you Dan for all you do.
Mine was hell for a few months recently. Just remember not to lose hope. It'll get better
Great username

this is my fave mall you visited and love to see all of these films remastered, thanks!!! Muzak Stimulus 1974 on the soundtrack and its perfect!
This mall looks like my high school and I graduated in 2015.
What a lovely mall, love the skylight/light and fountain. You can just imagine the hustle and bustle in it's day before Christmas and in the summer. Great video Dan with the 70s effects to give the atmosphere and the 80s too.
01:32 That is so rad, the nostalgic buzz is strong with that light set up.
Your videos are the best I can’t watch other dead mall videos

I think that red and white stripped store front was and early TGI FRIDAY'S Restaurant....
Another certified slapper! The hits never get old!
3:52 TGI Fridays, this is how they looked in the 80s
Thank you! I was wondering why it looked familiar.
actually it wasn't, it was a restaurant called Lums, I grew up in Morgantown after the Lums closed I don't recall any other restaurant ever being in that space.
This was the one I was waiting for in the remastered series! This place is amazing!
🥰🥰🥰🥰love anything you do to make us smile🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 keep on keeping on🥰🥰🥰
God I love these remastered edition's I hope to make it out on vacation and see some of these sites and hopefully meet you one day!! 😎🇺🇲
Good idea on office spaces!💯👍

Nice remastered video. The video SAL has on this location gives some more information, on top if the good info Dan gives in this one.
Gabriel Brothers also used to be in that huge front where there was the brick wall with the lanterns. Not sure who was there before that though. Of course Gabes also moved above the Morgantown Mall way back in 2006.
That was so cool, reminds me of hiw my local mall looked when I was a kid
this was my local mall as a kid..lol
The restaurant on the right is most likely a Lum's BTW ❤️
They still have the bright table and chairs from Weiner World!
@ 7:24 that old ladies wheelchair/bike though
I feel like that was a science store for kids.. we had one at the Oaks mall in Gainesville FL.. those windows always caught my attention
Dan-the music you're using in the background...is that Seeburg Background Music? Love it!!!
This is one RAD mall! We had a store with those exact wooden windows.
love the 1975 section
I believe the one small place was some sort of lotto wicket and the restaurant was a Ponderosa that was my guess .
the small place next to the restaurant was actually a small frozen yogurt stand, the restaurant itself the last I remember was some sort of Italian pizza and pasta place but that was 20 yrs ago since I lived in Morgantown.
@@tmurph247 Cool thank You !
Always thought the inside of that mall was so cool. The outside is an absolute train wreck, its hard to even tell it is a mall.
I legit live in Morgantown and that place has been empty for years!! Come back and bring Rick and let’s hang out and go back 🤣🤣🤣 there is some sketchy hotels here too! Lol
Wvu has a metro system currently
If it’s the one I’m thinking of , it’s all automated?
The red & white store cap reminds me of Ferrills. (Spelling not sure) They were a ice cream/ food place.
Hi the restaurant that you were talking about. Kind of reminds me of TGI Fridays. It kind of looks like their logo.
I'm rather impressed that its been dying for such a long time, but...its clean, has power, theres no big leakage from the ceiling like other malls you've shown.
Very awesome 👏🏻
this is like one of those 3d edited back room videos

Anyone wanting a movie set with a retro mall, this is for them.
They do have a tram that goes between Downtown and West Virginia University
Reminds me of Mallrats
The music during the first looks into this mall sound like a 70's version of the first stage in "Everything at the End of Time," by The Caretaker.
3:40 Formerly an Arby’s
i knew those planters looked familiar then you panned out to such a notorious liminal space image location
the red and white striped awning outside the restaurant space sort of reminds me of a TGIFriday.
5:15
Oh, good. I thought it was the Crappy Chinese Buffet.
if you look into it you'll find out it was actually the great Chinese roadkill Cafe, no joke they got caught bringing roadkill into the restaurant kitchen and using it it their food.

The store with the windows *may* have been a Casual Corner. I think that was the chain with those windows.
Cool mall. 😎😎
It does have a certain pizzazz about it for some reason. Glad it's still around. 😎😎
I'm not sure what the weird resistant but I think it was a Red Rubben.
I tried to find the section box but I couldn’t find it….
😂😂😂😂
This mall is in west Virginia.
wish we could get together explore Nebraska!
Great video Dan! I remember those windows! I just can’t place them. For some reason I am associating it with books or cards? I might be wrong. I am thinking that I remember them from Security Square, Mall.
Brooks was the store.
At 8:15, can someone tell me what store this was? We have a store front in a local old mall with the same shaped window / entrance area. The space is not used but the front is exactly the same.
I just wanted to leave a message in the "Message Box."
I will see myself out.
There's a ghost or something walking from left to right @ 18:40. Anybody else see it? It's a white line of some kind.
I have been wondering about those cool wood windows since you did the Frederick Towne Mall. My childhood Mall. Did you ever confirm if they were Brooks? Could it be Paul Harris?

I was in the Frederick Towne Mall from 1985 to 2013.
It was a Paul Harris.
Ahhh the music and fake plants 🤣 or real plants 👍
That second restaurant looks like an old LUMS or Bonanza
I wish you could do malls again?
You should have said, "Please fill out a comment card and place it in the box."
I wonder what Rick's hot take on the stuff in the thrift store would be.

Beautiful '70s mall. Such a shame.
Anyone know the name of the first song?
Looks like a call of duty map lol
