I started the strip down of the Spitfire that you see in the film, MK356, while on RSS at Abingdon. Unfortunately it was the one that crashed this year (2024) as part of the BBMF.

Mildenhall back in the day was the best airshow in the uk. Not even close....great memories

Great to watch. Our family were based at RAF Coltishall in Norfolk in the sixties when they had Lightnings. Spent a lot of time at the 'Crash gates'. Unfortunately, I didn't have a cinecamera, and my slides didn't turn out all that well either. Thanks for sharing.

Watching this today and I think all of those aircraft are now long gone, with the exception of the reds and bbmf

nato organised this airshow to let people see the advanced nato, and USA wanted to show the world they have the best jet ,completely underestimated the aerodynamics of the su 25. i heard a story the f15 or f16 ,not sure now, showed off first its abilitys after that the two su 25 made such incredible maneuvres ,that the US pilot went down on his knees after they flew by and watched on his knees to the end. his carrier was over after that , i think he even died 2 years after that by a "accident" anyone any information on that ? not much footage available on the internet and no such news about it to find, no news at all...of that time

It is now 33 years old and was delivered to United brand new May 1991. 18:54 - That 767-200 (N615UA) retired from the United fleet in 2003 (at age 20) and is still stored in Victorville, California with many components removed. 21:40 - That 737-300 (N392UA) was delivered to United 4 years before this video. It left United and went to ATA Airlines after 15 years of service in 2005. Two years later, it went to Lithuania for a couple years flying charter flights, then to Estonia for more charter flights, then went to SCAT Airlines in Kazakhstan in 2009. One month later, it caught fire while parked at the airport and was destroyed. 22:49 - That 747-200 (G-VGIN) was Virgin Atlantic's second 747 to enter the fleet in 1986. She was 15 years old after already flying for National Airlines and China's CAAC. She served with Virgin for another 15 years before being sold off to Nigeria's Kabo Air. She served with Kabo Air for 6 years, and then was retired and stored in the Mojave Desert in 2007. She has since been scrapped. 23:30 - That 747SP (N147UA) was originally sold to Pan Am in 1978. Then, 8 years later is was acquired by United Airlines in 1986. She served with United until 1986 (15 years) and was then retired and preserved Apr 2001, at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center for research purposes. Given the time and place of this video, I believe this video is this plane returning to SFO after making the long SYD-AUK-HNL-SFO flight. Such an amazing week with 74th being based at Fairford during the show. So many phantoms!

Was my first IAT, and boy was it a good one. But I was staying in the nearby Kempsford in a tent, which was torture due to the temperatures that week. The Whale, Pittsburg A7`s, England A-10`s, seeing the Blackbird for the first and last time, and meeting King Hussein are my favorite memories of that week.

When airshows were worth going too. So much different aircraft types back then. Little did the pilots know they would be going to war less than a year later.

Oh wow, I used to fly as an unaccompanied minor on Skywest (and sometimes United Express) turboprops frequently back in the early to mid 90s into and out of SMF! I remember that old junked fighter plane out there at the far end of the airfield. So cool to see this.

Great video I will never forget that 9 ship take off everyone thought they would go straight up but they turned left stayed low and came in 90 degrees to the runway climbing vertical at centreline with the later lightnings still rolling for take off underneath them. Happy days.
