6m SSB and CW Aurora Backscatter Propagation - what it sounds like
zhlédnutí 1,3KPřed 2 měsíci
As pretty much everyone on Earth knows, we just experienced a level G5 (the highest level) "solar storm" that caused aurora to be visible over much of the northern tier of the United States, and even as far south as Alabama and North Texas. Ham radio operators have long known that during an aurora, that propagation conditions can change dramatically - wiping out HF but possibly enhanced in VHF....
Twin fawns born on our property today

We moved from the city out to a beautiful 5 acres in a semi-rural area in unincorporated Kitsap County in December of 2017. Just about every year, there has been a new generation of deer born on the property. But this morning, while heading down to the barn for some chores, we spotted a brand new pair of fawns, who had been born just hours earlier. Dave

    Nice example of various portable ham antennas. Questions: Do you and the station being contacted most always report 5/9 during contests? Reason I ask is some stations were a little weaker. Also what is the 3rd number? Regards from Nebraska, John N2AO

      Great question - but yes that's how most contests work. The "signal report" is always 59 for SSB or 599 for CW regardless of signal level. It's just how contests have worked since the beginning of contests. The third number, in this particular contest, is the serial number of that contact - what number is it in my log. In this video, they aren't really in order due to editing - but if you were to hear the entire session, my serial numbers started at 1 and just worked their way up to around 250 or by the time I was done with the session. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

    My dad built one of these back in the late 50s. He strung a wire antenna out a back window from the house to the garage (about 100+/- a few feet). It worked amazingly well even on shortwave. I wish I still had it, if for nothing else than the nostalgia value.

    AJ1G here , Chris from Stonington in SE CT. The auroral scatter propagation was wild here between about 4 PM and 8 PM EDT on Friday May 10 . Worked about 40 stations as far west as Minnesota, down to Virginia, out to southern Ontario a d up to PEI, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, and all over the Northeast with just 100 watts on CW to a little 2 element 6 meter beam pointed north the whole time. What little SSB I heard on 6 meters was so smeared by the Doppler shift caused by the unstable reflection/refraction off the auroral 3:40 curtains that is was impossible to understand. Only have worked auroral scatter here a couple of times over more than 40 years from here. The stuff last week was definitely to wildest!

      You can chat with the ISS as it goes over. They have radios and most astronauts are Hams too. Just need to know when it's going to go over, point your Yagi antenna at it, follow it, and start calling. They just might answer! Happens a lot....

    • @davesradioshack
      @davesradioshack Před 2 měsíci

      Yes - VERY strange sound. It's because of the phase changes caused by the aurora. The stronger the aurora, the clearer the audio. Weaker aurora, and the signals are very wispy and thin.

    I have met a lot of interesting and intelligent people in my 32 years as a licensed ham operator! But Bob Heil! Wow! He has to be the happiest and most interesting man I have ever had the privilege of knowing! His talents have no end and his passion to teach and tell you all about everything he knows is unmeasurable! It’s rare to meet a person whose passion makes them so happy that they will do anything to get you excited about it! Be it pipe organs, ham radios, antique t-birds! Bob could talk hours on end with such enthusiasm you WILL LISTEN! Ok, I’ve probably went long enough with this comment but hey! Knowing we lost Bob this last week I’m having a 😢😢 hard time accepting he can no longer answer my emails and my crazy questions! Bob was everybody’s “Elmer” and I am sure there are thousands of hams affected by his passing! 73 Bob 😢 you are already missed!

    nice exactly what I would have used (rotor and rooftop). I unfortunately settled for the Yaesu 450 and a Rohn 5 foot tripod due to light wind load. Put 3 VHF/UHF yagis on top of Yaesu, wind load about 2+ so I am OK. I just came across the opportunity to get a Glen Martin in mint condition, 1 year late so I am going to pass on it. Too many holes in roof and also need forcement. N2SLO

    Wow! Just such an amazing life and work. Glad to see it documented now and not later. Radio and particularly ham radio and rock n roll go hand in hand so much of the time. Many of the pioneer studio engineers had some sort of foot or step up from radio. The electric music , immediate example, -the electric guitar changed the face of music. Amplification has become ever so much the big part of modern musical tone. It was the application notes direct from the pages of the RCA radio tube publications that Leo Fender used as his guide to build the most popular evolution of guitar amplifier designs. He built amplifiers from his radio shop in Fullerton California . First experimenting and building PA systems much like Bob Heil. He rented amplified sound systems from his radio repair shop. His first guitar amplifiers that he produced were sold in 1946 . Before the actual advent of the electric guitar. These were originally built for lap steel Hawaiian guitars popular after WW2 . Soon solid body electric guitars changed the sound of popular music. Electronic experimenters, many of them radio and ham radio guys found their niche behind the scenes in rock n roll. Ham radio provided a resourceful pool of technically adept to lead the evolution. Radio has provided the groundwork for many technical trades and engineering. It's not just aerospace or defense that many amateur radio operators found careers but many hams can be found throughout the professional music trades as well!
