    What a great instructional video on building a wild rice pond. So helpful for all who want to restore wetlands and help wildlife in the process. Great job Dave Rogers, Scott Erion and Melissa Rogers. We need more wetland habitats in Oregon and Dave, you've contributed a lifetime of effort to make it happen. Thank You for showing us how this can happen !

      No, it stays where you plant it pretty well. The ducks will land in it just fine, just depends if you want an open water landing zone.

    So I’ve got a beaver pond right next to a large creek in North Carolina. Probably 2-3 feet where I would want to plant it. I could literally broadcast the seed into the water and it will grow? And if so when should I plant it if I want it ready by end of October-early November? Sorry. I know this question has been asked many times. I just want to make sure I’m reading it right.

    • @riverrefugeseed9558
      @riverrefugeseed9558 Před 2 lety

      Hi Jeremy, yes the seed can be broadcasted directly into standing water up to 3 feet deep as long as you have good water clarity, little to no weed competition, and good sunlight. I would recommend planting sometime between March and the end of April.

      Hi Featherz & Bonez, it really depends on how strong the current is. If it's relatively weak/slow you should be able to water broadcast the seed and get it stick to the bottom. If you'd like to discuss it, feel free to give us a call at 541-466-5309

    • @riverrefugeseed9558
      @riverrefugeseed9558 Před 3 lety

      James, for the sake of maximum seed viability it is best to get it planted by May. At 100-120 days to maturity, it puts your rice crop finishing late August/early September at which time the mature seed shatters off the stalk, back in to the water where it waits for the birds to feed on it. That puts it a little before your October target but not by enough that I would think it would greatly effect your seasons bird production.

    How much quantity wild rice seed need in 1 hectare land

    • @riverrefugeseed9558
      @riverrefugeseed9558 Před 3 lety

      Our recommended seeding rate is 50-75lb per acre so one hectare being close to 2.5 acres would put it at about 125-185lb to cover a hectare.

    • @riverrefugeseed9558
      @riverrefugeseed9558 Před 6 měsíci

      No, wild rice cannot be drilled. Since it is a wet seed it will not feed through a drill. Best to either hand broadcast or use a broadcast spreader that has an agitator wheel in it.

    This video shows what one man can do to improve habitat for waterfowl and many other species of wildlife. I met Dave Rogers in the 1980's when he had already started building some of these ponds and was raising wild rice. He has continued to acquire surrounding properties to expand the wetlands project near his home to over 500 acres. His grandsons and their families joined the business and with all of them now working on the properties, the business has grown to include raising all types of seeds for wetlands restoration and sold all over the country. More property was purchased nearer to my home and Dave and family have continued to restore wetlands there. They together have done more than anyone I know to benefit wildlife. They are an amazing family and accomplished so much. I'm so glad to have them as neighbors. Thank You Dave and the Rogers family.

    How well does this type of water control system work? Is there a lot of adjusting the pipe as the water level rises?

    • @riverrefugeseed9558
      @riverrefugeseed9558 Před 4 lety

      It works great. It is good to add some support to the pipe (fence post, T post, etc) once the water gets high, to help support the pipe as the weight and pressure of the water build. We also use flashboard riser headgates attached to culverts to control water as well.

      Run off from the grass fields above it was enough to fill this pond. We could tell where the water was draining off by a shallow ditch it had made, so we positioned our pond around this ditch. There is a clip at the end of the video that shows it full of water.

    That was a great short video showing the development of your neighbor's pond. Also good to see that you refer to the soil survey to understand the soil types. I have access to a soils lab, so I just collect samples from the surface and 2 and 4 feet down and run a sieve analysis to know the distribution of particle sizes. But those old soil surveys are really good. I'll be calling Chris tomorrow to place my order for wild millet. Just 550 pounds. Looking forward to my ponds have millet all over.
