Forest Hills Gardens SPRING HIGHLIGHTS • Queens, NY • April 2024
Since the Forest Hills Gardens neighborhood is my most popular walking tour video, I thought I’d do a highlight reel type of thing, featuring my favorite houses and parts of the neighborhood. I got the idea when I walked through it recently and noticed all the blooming, budding flowers and trees, which looks really beautiful. I’ve been super busy recently with work, but just had to make this video to share with the viewers. The footage here was shot on the first two weekends of April and you’ll notice how much fuller everything looks in just one weeks time. Spring is a great season in the northeast with all the colors and ambience of nature ramping up. Hope you enjoy this revisit to the ultimate hidden gem area of Queens, NY known as Forest Hills Gardens!
BRIEF HISTORY:
Forest Hills Gardens is a picturesque neighborhood located within the larger neighborhood of Forest Hills in Queens. This exclusive community is known for its lush greenery, winding streets and elegant architecture. Developed in the early 1900s, Forest Hills Gardens is made up of beautiful Tudor-style homes, co-op buildings, and manicured gardens. The neighborhood is also home to an array of cultural attractions, including the West Side Tennis Club, which hosted the US Open for many years. The area boasts easy access to mass transit, shops, and top-rated restaurants, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a tranquil suburban lifestyle with urban amenities.
Forest Hills Gardens is a neighborhood located in the northwestern part of Queens, New York City. The neighborhood was planned and developed in the early 1900s by the Russell Sage Foundation. The original developers wanted to create a community that would cater to the needs of the wealthy, and thus, the neighborhood was designed with large houses, lush gardens, and abundant green spaces. The name "Forest Hills" is believed to have been inspired by the vast forests that once covered the area before it was developed. The addition of "Gardens" to the name reflected that this was not just a residential neighborhood, but one that was focused on the natural beauty of the environment and the importance of green spaces for the overall well-being of its residents. Today, Forest Hills Gardens remains a highly sought-after neighborhood with a rich history and a strong commitment to preserving its natural beauty.
Forest Hills Gardens is a neighborhood in the Queens borough of New York City, with a history that traces back to the early 1900s. The neighborhood was planned and developed by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., son of the renowned landscape architect who designed Central Park. Olmsted Jr. envisioned a serene residential area that would be nature-based, with winding streets and spacious lawns, which he achieved by using the ideas of the Garden City movement, a British movement that proposed a model for town planning. The neighborhood was built on a former golf course, and its remarkable architectural style is reflected in the stately Tudor and Georgian-style homes, adorned with intricate details such as textured brickwork, terracotta tiles, and steep rooflines. Today, the neighborhood is considered one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Queens, known for its picturesque streets, high-end shops and restaurants, and diverse community.

I realized it was leap year when I saw the 29 days of February on my calendar, so I decided it was time for something special. I was lucky to catch the first real deal blizzard in over two years in New England. A foot of snow fell overnight and blanketed everything. Even more in some places. Hands down, the best place to see Christmas lights and decorations in Brooklyn is the Dyker Heights neighborhood. Maybe even in all of New York City? WOW. One thing for sure, Queens has no shortage of beautiful, upscale neighborhoods. I headed over to Beechhurst intent on making a video of all the nice homes there around evening time with hopes of getting a vivid sunset, but of course the usual mass of clouds rolled in out of nowhere and obscured whatever sun was beaming in the first half of the video. You were all but standing on my parents porch. My Dad passed away in April and loved to sit on the porch but he must have been inside or with his great grandchildren he loved so much. Thought maybe he might have been caught on video. He is some video I shot in 1985 in that area with my late friend Rob and my friend Doug. We were not really trying to document the homes but goofing around and caught a lot of the area as it was almost 40 years ago. czcams.com/video/ljzsapHV_Gs/video.htmlsi=66hcsyb5VAPcjVvy

I feel the most profound gratitude to have grown up in the ancient land of Massachusetts; where our nation first began to form, with all its triumph and tragedies. Far beyond the human presence ; beyond the native inhabitants there are the remnants of ancient 300,000,000 year old mountain ranges stretching from Georgia, to Manhattan, to Canada. These vast mountains dwarfed the tiny nubs we call the Appalachians, ,Berkshires, White Mountains of today; rising 20,000 plus feet above the sea. They were raised up by ancient continental tectonic collisions all along the eastern sea board in mountain building epochs called (orogenies). There were several periods of accretion / adding on to the continental crust landmass of oceanic island archs.. Hard to conceive but it's reality. Successive glaciers, and eons of erosion wore these giant mountains down; leaving behind the vast collection of borders dragged by the ice sheet that was two miles 11,000 feet thick only 20,000 years ago. The moraine or remains of this massive snow plow effect left us Cape Cod's water supply and lakes in (kettle ponds) like Lake Maspanoc of Hopkinton and many many others.. It left the vast shoals of boulders that were deposited in Narraganset bay and the sands of Cape Cod and the islands Nantucket, Marthas Vineyard. There is so much to dream about in the rock record. vast continental collisions we can barely comprehend.
