An Over-Analysis of FROM Software Boss Design: Errata and Additions
Over the past few months, I've create Boss Analysis videos for Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, Bloodborne, Dark Souls III, Sekiro, and Demon's Souls. And while my personal life keeps me busy and I finish scripting out the finale video for Elden Ring, I wanted to go back and do an Errata video - diving into the comments to cover details I missed, got incorrect, or otherwise neglected to mention!
Naturally, this will be the seventh part of the series, and though most parts stand mostly independently, I tried to keep this one a little more brief compared to the full analysis!
00:00 - Introduction
01:10 - Dark Souls
09:29 - Dark Souls 2
17:09 - Bloodborne
28:30 - Dark Souls 3
33:50 - Sekiro
37:12 - Demon's Souls
39:23- Epilogue

Some of isshins attacks in the sword saint are technically perilous attacks for jumping that just don't offer a jump attack. You don't need to run away so if you time it right you can still keep up the pressure, it's all about aggression and I love that.
With the demon of hatred you can hear wolf offer his apologies to the sculptor if you drink every drink with all 3 drinkers. And also the old ladies dialogue changes. Little touches like that are also appreciated.
Shigakichi is classed as a armour enemy and also can have a spear attack strip them of their armour. So it's another cool use for the prosthetic.
One interpretation I've seen of the divine Dragon lore wise is that the old dragons are not rotting when killed but instead rejuvenating because they are newer budding shoots of a old tree that you are pruning to bring it back greatness. The divine Dragon itself is also fused to the tree and having had it's gift stolen seems to be also rotting as well. The most likely thing that is happen is that the Dragon is having it's first pruning either ever or in a long time and thus while you are damaging it you will overall leave it in a better place then when you came in. Especially if you intend to do the whole dragons reunion ending restoring the divine Dragon to its full glory.
‘chained ogre is one of the hardest in the game’ are you okay???
32:47 I suspect the confusion you had was because of the English dub. Those who had played in Japanese Dub with English subs usually did not have this confusion.
21:01 As I recently learned, this is also true of Ebrietias. She’s also a Kin, not a true Great One. While the rematch against her, is still stupid, she’s not like the other Great Ones necessarily. Edit: Actually let me clarify this. Certain enemies in Bloodborne are known as Kin. They happen to take more damage from thrust attacks and bleed a certain blood type different to great ones. Both of these ring true of Ebrietas whereas it doesn’t for the Amygdala, Moon Presence and Orphan of Kos. Granted Ebrietas is not given much clarification about her origins in the lore, but it seems she’s not a true great one either.
The second Ashina spears fight can be stealthed, the general and the mini boss are facing away from eachother meaning you can sneak the general and puppeteer him to make the fight easier. It is difficult to tell how they’re facing because of how dark it is though so I see how you thought they were looking at each other
The magic circles on the floor in the fools idol is the most unique aspect about it, having to see where they’re placed and remember them is fun
Not gonna lie you’re kinda ass
Imagine a proper remake of Dark Souls 1 like the Resident Evil remakes have been. Not like it couldn't be done, half the boss fights in Ds1 have already been remade in later games already. *ahem* Erdtree Avatar *ahem* Ornstein & Smough might actually be good if you weren't fighting the jank as well as the bosses. Fights like Sif, Artorias, Manus, Kalameet, etc, would be elevated so much if it was remade in the style and feel of say Elden Ring or Ds3. Maybe bosses like Seath or Bed of Chaos could be overhauled to be actually good fights, and areas like Lost Izilith could be finished. They'd need to find a balance of updating the game while also keeping the original intent of course, but man would it be glorious if they did.
12:23, Capra demon does not have the same theme as Taurus and Asylum demon what are you on
I like how you highlight isshin's character. Even I beaten the game multiple times. If I am careless and not focused on Sword Saint fight, he will fuck me up big time. But beating Isshin is really satisfying.
23:00 something I want to mention is that we actually do fight Laurence before we see him in the nightmare. He’s the Bloodletting beast. If you notice, his skull doesn’t match the Cleric Beast but matches the Bloodletting beast perfectly. He’s also the biggest beast and usually, the stronger a person’s will and the longer they resist beasthood, they’ll turn into a bigger beast. And Laurence definitely held his beasthood off for a while as we find him right before fighting Queen Yharnam, meaning he was crawling through chalice dungeons for a while in order to find Mergo.
Using the poison blade prosthetic (been too long, forgot the name) trivializes the snake eyes mini boss although it takes a handful of hits to proc the poison effect. Try it next time! Can also use final slash to dodge her grab easily if you upgrade the blade
I really like gaping dragon's head weak spot. In my first playthrough i instantly picked up on that and since my health was too low anyway i basically did it with an RTSR setup all by myself not knowing it was a real strategy to just get it's benefits and... not take damage
Hot take- i liked flamelurker. It required previse dodging, but it is fair, seeing as you can easily stun lock him for 3 or 4 hits. I was on my a-game, but i beat him first try, because you can learn that moveset. I had a much harder time fighting penetrator. His delayed hits are hard to time properly.
I give F for Maria. She does what I hate the most about multi-phase bosses. The last phase was difficult, so I had to go though the already done first two phases over and over again. This made 2/3 of the boss fight boring as a tedious boss run-back. I liked that the moon presens was weak, it was like I can quit the game at any time. I hate when the final boss is a difficult roadblock.
In reply to what you were saying in the Sinh segment, losing dutablity so fast is technically a bug. In DS2, losing durablity is based on FPS, meaning for as many frames your weapon is in contact with a "damaging" surface, you lose durability. This was all well and good in base DS2, which ran at 30 FPS, SOTFS runs at 60 FPS, making durability decrease twice as fast
Whenever people moan about the camera in action games they always sound like such chumps to me. I have NEVER had an issue with the camera in any Fromsoft game, nor any other action game that I can think of off the top of my head A lot of your other complaints about animations also just make it sound like you suck at this game lmao. Bad video
Hard disagree on ashina isshin, he requires the same amount of aggression as emma, it’s just that you have to side step the two fire attacks. His third fire attack (charged one that comes before one mind) you can easily hit him out of. If you don’t, it’s easy to avoid the fire, you only have to deflect one mind which is honestly much easier and less punishing than geni’s infamous floating passage. But I agree that one of the fire attacks has ridiculous tracking, hits you in the air for no reason, and hits hard. It’s not a problem if you stay close to him and keep the pressure, but the hitbox is bs
This is the content I am here for. Excellent bakdown!!
Nevermind i take back my praise on the Sekiro video- how you gonna give Pursuer a C man 😭 Im kidding, but, at least you were a little more fair than most who make videos on that game at least.
I actually like the watchdog, fights with it are tense, slapping it's knees can break them and it will stagger which is relatable. It's flame aoe slashes are an opportunity to back up and heal or buff. Wearing the charred hunter set will heavily reduce the damage it deals (the gear's stats do matter, this is more than just fashion souls). Stand in front of it and it will charge forth with very effing lethal, one time it charged just to get away from me since I was beating it's side/rear/flank so hard it couldn't do anything.
You do know the emblem you can buy for 10k is optional since a different path opens up as a result of killing blood starved, and that path loops around to connect you to the rest of the church.
This is my first video of yours and I really enjoyed it. I probbaly was when you said Sekiro was your favorite FS game anyway but still lol I'd love to see you take this approach to boss direction to other games, like Kingdom Hearts, I think you'd have a lot of neat things to way- and not just about the secret/post-game bosses either.
There were moments in Elden Ring where I did feel accomplishment but nothing like killing a boss in Sekiro. Hearing "Hesitation is defeat." Became my moto for souls games afterwards and actually found myself getting better at soulslike games in general
Hey. You know how you fought the snake eyes in the poison swamp after the folding screen monkeys? Did you try using the pupeteer ninjutsu on an enemy in the are to have a 2v1? Or lure the boss into the poison because they can be poisoned and are highly weak to it due to being descendants of the okami warriors from fountain head in lore.
small point but I'm surprised you didn't mention how if you linger too long on the platform above the asylum demon, the demon will jump up and smash the platform and send you tumbling to the ground. its another way the game serves to encourage taking fast action.
When I fought the owl and won after the fight I still couldn’t believe I beat him lol, it’s like when I do a portrait tattoo even though I have the skill I still look at it like damn I did that, but with the sword saint I felt like I rightfully earned that win on skill alone
p.s. I hated this game for the longest until I got better so don’t give up, it’s my favorite game now
If Pontiff is so cool, tell me why he lets a naked fuck with a large stick parry him when he lunges for the first time
You can tell every wiki of From Software game bosses is wrong because 'naked dude with a round piece of leather and a katana' isn't listed among everything's weaknesses.
Had to do a double take when I heard the subscriber number. Quality of the video made me think you had at least 10 times that. Fantastic work, can't wait for elden ring
I know it might feel counter intuitive to burn the metal shaft on the windmill, but imagine how much grease is all over that thing, it would burn pretty easily. That said they could have conveyed it better
Seath does have one positive quality: Moonlight Great sword tailcut
The 1-4 thing is false the commenter is wrong you never needed to fight the other archdemons first just the one to enter 1-3. I have the ps3 version and you can definitely enter 1-4 early.
curse rotten greatwood deserves no higher than an F. This boss made me almost give up on every fromsoft game. Luckily I didnt because I love them now, but god, I hated this boss. Everything felt like guessing work because the camera sucks there
31:59 i did the exact same thing it's so misleading
Why do I recognise this dude's voice, like does he have another channel or something?
Lone shadow longswordsmen is not required, you can skip him by taking the tunnel in the abandoned dungeon that brings you to the Shichimen warrior in that area. You can also have a conversation with that lone shadow in the well
Pretty much agree with everything else sans Spear of the Church, who's easily an A in my books. I don't personally run an amazing build for PVP, but I am quite versed in it so that skill isn't an issue. I find SoTC to be too easy most of the time, as the first painting guardian is fairly easy to kill alone, leaving you with a player and another painting guardian down the line. The player boss doesn't have any poise it wouldn't have normally if you fight it alone except after it uses the unique spear move given to it, so pressuring the guardian while the boss tries to keep it alive is really the last hurdle the fight has in store. Mind you, even if it takes a bit, the painting guardian only casts the AOE heal twice, so past that its not going to punish you further. Once you kill the guardian, its basically just a PVP fight where you have your remaining estus versus a guy with no estus. It doesn't take many hits to finish the fight against any build and while I agree that some builds can be insufferable, a lot of the people I find as SoTC are either clueless or doing a fun boss cosplay, so its never really that bad. I do enjoy seeing the unique things people come up with though, trying to make their boss experience. It was a good sendoff to the best PVP Fromsoft has done in their games to this point, seeing how horribly things went regarding PVP in Elden Ring.
my friend you totally missed what actually happened in the oceiros fight. you didn't kill the baby, and the animation was off screen during your footage. Oceiros blames the baby for him losing the fight and he goes BERSERK, flinging himself across the battlefield and slamming the baby against the ground over and over. That moment still haunts me after all these years.
Video game melee combat distilled to perfection. That 'clang' you get from getting the timing right on parries is effing glorious!
Finally a relatable take on the crystal sage! I still have nightmares because of a INT only run I did while playing with keyboard and mouse. The sage was one of the most frustrating fights in the whole series!
I’m fine with following a gank bosses tempo, as long as it isn’t waiting for a long time for some red-eyed dumbass to finally do something for me.
I believe that The Armored Warrior is the only boss that can break your stace even if yo do perfect parry to his last combo attack, its a great fight for me
Is this cody'sCLab
I couldn't disagree with you more on the old dog, almost every attack is punishable and the way it bleeds lava is really satisfying. You can stagger both through the legs or the head, so what you said about only the head being worth punishing isn't true. The mechanics are great for an early game boss too, being more challenging than the previous bosses without being too difficult for where it's at.
