Why Growing Zones are Overrated for Vegetable Gardening
Grab your copy of The Self-Sufficiency Garden here: geni.us/SelfSufficiencyGarden
I wanted to make a video that highlights a more important way of looking at growing climates when it comes to growing annual vegetables. Rather than focusing on extreme minimum winter temperatures,, where not many annuals will be in the ground anyway, it is far more important to know the growing window you have

    0:28 Huw was spot on here i used to hate the taste of "fresh" bought tomatoes cos they tasted like metal until I grew some myself last year and man! i just pick them when they look matured but unripe and chew them i can say they tasted like apples very refreshing and just over 20 tomato plants planted I snacked and cooked with it while giving neighbours too , and for about 2-3 months I had tomatoes available ...that's the best thing

    I always start off with a plan, then proceed to buy random seeds and plants and bulbs and just jam them in wherever I can...lol...I've always called it "chaos gardening," then I found out that's actually a thing, albeit a little different than what I do. I always end up with more food than my family can eat, so it works for me.

    This is very expensive project to do. I am doing something similar. Cost of beds and bark and soil if you don't have good soil. If you need chemicals or seeds there's another cost. Cost of water if you don't have butts. Time and space. WOW it adds up.

    I'm going to be forced to try this period of neglect as we'll be traveling for a graduation for a handful of days. My concern is that I'm growing in a region of the US where the sun is quite a bit stronger than anywhere in the UK, and my tomatoes may not survive their attempts to find water deeper in the soil. Time will tell. Interesting content as always Huw!

    I wonder if tomatoes should be grown in addition to what you just said by letting the stem touch the ground horizontally to get more roots in to the soil? Sort of as a stolon. I once tried growing tomatoes by planting them deeply and roughly at a 45 degree angle and several stems grew roots from parts that weren't touching the soil but were directly above it. My method back then was growing them in grow bags and having those sit on a wicking bed. So after the vines grew a bit too long for my trellis I lowered the plants even further for contact and the stems rooted pretty strongly. Never had any issues with those tomatoes unless it rained and they would then be watered from above instead from the bottom causing cracking issues. Perhaps the most natural way of growing them is horizontally at least for part of the plant?

    Hmmm... I think that growing zones actually have a major impact on self-sufficiency. For example, there no such thing as winter gardens in zone 4, which means that unless one spends thousands of dollars on a heated greenhouse (expensive when it's -40c) there is nothing to harvest between November and May, with rhubarb, some salad if there is no frost, and the start of asparagus. Sure I can grow kale under a plastic bucket but that is not self-sufficiency. There are lots of ways to extend the seasons, but it's still no more than 5 or 6 months of growing season, which greatly reduces the amount if food one will harvest.

    Absolutely agree, I had a volunteer Tom grown in my strawberry bed without pruning suckers a single plant produced over 15kg tomatoes. It was well over 6 feet trailing on the ground without any support. As a result it grew additional roots where it had direct contact with soil.

    BOOK HELP! Some of the garden structure you say what size you've made for your garden, such as the hoop house, hot beds, and hoop beds. But your other raised beds have left me guessing. I know that I will need to make some adjustments, although I have the land to do your exact layout... for example I need wider paths for a wheelbarrow. But I need a starting point, since you are very exact with your planting (so many cm apart, with one in the middle...). Do you have a layout of your garden beds with measurements? At the very least, what is the measurement of your standard raised bed?

  • @misssophie6515
    @misssophie6515 Před dnem

    The problem of many yt videos is also that they can lead the beginner to believe that everything is easy and picturesque and that you can fix or correct everything. My garden dreams made me ignore the reality that the only spaces available to me at that time for growing were unsuitable for most of those dreams and not really fixable by means within reason. I ended up putting in so much effort, trying to make it work, rather than say: this is what I have to work with, maybe let's not try to grow xyz, because it is not going to be satisfying or efficient. I ended up giving all my free time of two seasons to a veggie field and the yield was terrible, I neglected myself, during the hot summers often ate at 11 or 12 pm after rescueing and watering everything, stopped other hobbies that had previously brought me joy and since then it is a lot harder for me to relax or enjoy gardening work, during the frustrating seasons I still put myself under the pressure to not give up on that harvest, but I started seeing it as a chore, as something that makes it impossible to go away for even a short holiday anywhere between april and october. so if you just don't have the right conditions, step it down, play it safe, grow things where not much can go wrong or if it does go wrong where at least you didn't put in a whole bunch of time and money and you can always expand next year if you know that it works well.
