I set myself last year to make our Christmas Dinner be as self sufficient! I grew all the vegetables and it was such an amazing feeling on Christmas day to see everyone eat my year of harvests that I'd grown especially for that meal ☺️

This is like my sewing!
First I made all my girl's short pants. Then I made a few dresses. I replaced her outgrown shirts. I realized she was wearing handmade clothes every time she went to play outside! I made myself some shirts and shorts, and made her more sweaters and long pants. Slowly, bit by bit, I've replaced our whole wardrobe until we're wearing 100% handmade.
I'm glad to hear it's similar for gardening, as I know I can work into it.

Exactly what I was going to say 😊 I made my first top in 2016, thinking that Me Made May was an impossibility. I'm now wearing 75% Me Made every day and am seriously thinking of making my own underwear (is that TMI?) I've even started knitting again! Little by little is the key. Started gardening last year, looks like I'm going full Granny Core 😂

Hi Huw and Sam! Not really a commenter...but as a 30 something that has been growing for 2 years, I realise the more and more I speak to my friends, they cannot understand why I grow as they do not know how to actually cook!

Being Indian we use Green Chillies everyday, I am self sufficient on this from last 2 years. This year I am extending this to Jalapenos and other Mexican verities. Other targets for this year are Salads, Carrots and Potatoes (50%).
Do you grow them in a greenhouse or do you plant them out?

I love this approach! When I heard "self sufficient" I always thought I'd never be able to get that far, but I've already been self sufficient in so many specific crops. That makes me feel so much better about it! Thanks!

As a retired chef and self sufficient gardener i couldnt agree with Sam more , adapting what you have to produce delicious food can be a real skill in itself , my goals this year are to turn potatoes into desserts and as for growing im trying Chaote for the first time, i figure that a climbing summer squash will add both interest to the garden as well as the plate

Hi pal you need to speech about more about preserving your vegetables and fermenting how best to freezing to to extend your self-sufficiency
I love the idea of being self-sufficient in one thing. I am on a waitlist for an allotment, and I only have a small balcony I can grow things on, so I've decided I want to try to be self-sufficient in scallions for as long as possible this year. I use them a lot and they are easy to grow in pots on my balcony. It's a small thing but it does give me joy to figure out how much I need and if I can provide for myself instead of having to buy it.
I am so excited to get my hands on that book. I am exactly ready to hear and use what is in that book. I in fact started my self sufficiency journey with rosemary. I felt so good about never having to go to the store for rosemary when I needed it, that I started to think that I could be self-sufficient in so many herbs, and so I began growing other herbs. Then I decided that I’m always buying onions, garlic, and lettuce, so maybe I could start being self-sufficient in those. Last summer I planted lettuces and was successful and was able to harvest them. Then I found your channel, So that led me to plant garlic last fall and I just planted onion seeds. Your videos are so in line with what I want to do and now your book is so in line with what I crave. Thank you thank you thank you! How exciting for everybody involved!
Yes! That's one thing on my list is that this year is the last year I want to buy Italian seasoning. I want to start to grow those herbs instead.
Also I want this to be the last year I buy turmeric, ginger and roselle for my tea.
I have a few other small things that I have on my list that I buy monthly that have gotten higher in price. I have canned them all before so I know how to preserve them already.

I’m recently moved to a place with a small garden and I’m trying to be self-sufficient in kailaan, kabocha, daikon, Asian pears etc! Basically my favourite fruits and vegetables that are relatively difficult to get in the UK 😋
Huw and Sam...that was 12 of the most refreshing and encouraging minutes that I've had in a while! The marathon illustration was absolutely perfect to help me reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed about becoming more self sufficient in the garden. On my list I also include becoming more self sufficient in making our own compost, harvesting rain water, and collecting seeds for the following planting season. Thanks to both of you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.
Hmm, I’ve grown chives for years merely because they are attractive, I have NO idea what to cook with them. Also planted 8 leeks this year and I’ve never, ever eaten a leek! 🤣 Salad greens are abundant in my garden with more than enough to share with my meat rabbits. Carrots, beets and radishes are growing well with potatoes following right behind. Ive followed your directives for the core staples plus some tasty bits (herbs are so easy 👍🏻). Sweet potatoes and summer veg will be planted soon. Huw - I find your method of presentation has had a greater impact than all the gardening classes I’ve taken. It’s not so much the when to plant and when to harvest the food, it’s just a whole lot of WHY to plant what we plant AND how to extend the seasons. Your action plans are golden. ❤ Stop tormenting us about your new book! We still have to wait a month for the pre-orders to arrive!
4:00 Too add: Herbs are expensive to buy! So just by growing your own herbs you save quite a bit of money. (Though in my area tymne is easier to grow then rosemary)

I can't wait to get my book in Colorado. We moved last year from our home where I had built a beautiful permaculture landscape and garden over 10 years. Our new plot is larger but has terrible clay soil. I'll be using this year to install a greenhouse, build hotbeds, compost bins, and raised beds and fill them all with organic matter to decompose into compost. I've made so many screenshots from your videos to plan the layout of my kitchen garden and have enjoyed binge watching your videos. Thank you for your wonderful work.
When we moved into our house here in middle Tennessee - should be a great place for growing - we discovered that we had lots of hard, clay soil and too many rocks. So we started working on raised beds and building up our soil. It's taken time, but it is possible if you keep doing a little more each year!
Same, but my old permaculture garden was on clay. I found adding about 2-4 inch thick of wood chips helped a bunch, the soil was beautiful when I moved. Call arborists for the wood chips. Hope this helps.

Your sustainable philosophy has been what I’ve tried to get over to students in my workshops,, however I really have never emphasized it as you so masterfully have detailed. My future emphasis will be as you have outlined. Thanks. My students are mostly, novice homesteaders; with so much to learn it’s so easy to get palmated with THIS MUST BE DONE.

I am anxious about the arrival of you book. I ordered it several months ago. I grow most all my veggies already and herbs and even go foraging for edible wild foods and medicinal plants. Also have elderberry and blueberry and a couple cherry bushes. Even so, there is still lots to learn and that is where you come in. I love your gardening style and that you stay organic.

Book is preordered and im ready to learn the art of succession planting!!! Loving the content atm. Adapting your cooking to use different things. All my career as a chef i have been taught to pick an ingredient and make it sing! Wild garlic, asparagus and purple sprouting brocoli are some of my favourites to cook with! I always want to grow the things which u cant get in the shops!!! Love a tray of roasted rainbow carrots or a salad of baby vegetables with homemade salad cream!!!

Yes! Herbs and leafy greens are where I can manage self-sufficiency. All the rest are only from the garden when in season but I'm fine with that.
I must buy your book if I see it, for that chart of Sam's on veg cooking methods as I'm probably only cooking in 1 or 2 ways when there are so many more.
Of course, Huw, the gardening part will be a great resource too. I've already bought Tony O'Neills new book so I think I'm set for this year once I get yours too.

At this point my self sufficiency starts when the fish start biting and the veg starts growing in the spring, and takes a break in the winter for the most part. I don’t eat exclusively self sufficiency in the season I just make a point to often catch my own meals and eat the veg I grow. One day I hope to own a piece of land big enough to raise my own livestock as well. I’ll know I’m set when I can make Chinese dumplings and Jamaican curry goat from scratch, growing all of the ingredients at home.
Really looking forward to receiving my book; my daughter and i are hoping to develop our allotment using the ideas, especially the hooped bed cover. We have already decided to make one of our beds 10x4 to have a go on the small bed in one of Huws earlier book.
Love what you are speaking about- crop self-sufficiency is what I've come to. Twenty years ago I grew a lot more but with age and the plot of land I have, no longer dry beans etc. HOWEVER, kale, garlic (don't eat onions), leeks and salad greens I've reached" crop self-sufficiency" . For leaf/salad greens, in the winter I grow pea shoots and sprouts all year so have greens all year. For the coldest months there is no kale outside so each year I try to save a bit more to freeze. In the warm months I have greens in the gardens. Garlic for sure, and leeks. No hoop tunnel....yet...it's the cost and an extra pair of hands that's still the hurdle.
My target is (still) potatoes and carrots.....each year I hope :)

I was really hoping I could find a book that helps me build the bridge between the garden and the kitchen because I'm not good at adapting a recipe to the ingredients available and it seems your book is the one I must have ! I didn't plan to be totally self sufficient because I Have a quite small plot, but my plan is to eat something from the garden (vegetable or fruit, I exclude herbs witch is "too easy" 🙂) every single day of the year even if it's a small quantity and after only 3 years of installation of my garden I achieved 85% of this goal and seeing my goal more and more close to be reached is a real satisfaction, in addition to the wonderfull flavours I harvest of course! Thank you for being a helpfull part of my learning process.

This is so spot on! Knowing how to cook your veggies is just as important as knowing how to grow them. I have to admit that I do sometimes grow something, harvest it, and... now what? Don't know how to cook it. Luckily there's the internet for some guidance (and my dad)
So is storing it all, as most of us don't have room for another freezer, so need to dehydrate or preserve in another way.

A great video and a really good preview for your much awaited book. I really lke the phased approach to self suffiency. One minor general comment I am still confused beteween compost and feed as in mushroom compost or manure etc. Maybe I am missing something very basic but would welcome an explaination from the expert.
You have given me a new outlook just when I get deflated for not growing enough
As it turns out we are self sufficient in a few things however there is a gap in the winter
We live in Scotland and the last 2yrs have been horrible for any root veg
Now my goal is to self sufficient in salad and greens
I got micro greens and sprouts and Im doing the Kratsky method indoors ( setting up) so I can have consistent temperatures
But I will plant out as well
Kale is wonderful and will self seed in the millions!
Also elderberry which is super abundant and next year I will make enough preserves for a year
My neighbour gave us apples and now Im looking to learn how to can properly so again a years supply of apple sauce which both can go into a smoothie ( I only put a tiny bit of sugar in the sauce)
I have grown successfully lot of calendula which has many properties and I forage my own land for nettles and dandelion and ground elder . All almost a super food
And herbs are easy to grown if hardy woody type

Hi Hew. Love your videos past and present. This series is fantastic. I assume the book will translate to Australian (Tasmanian) conditions if I switch my brain to the opposite time of year for the seasons?
This is exactly how I garden. I rejoice when I succeed in another produce that I don't have to buy from a supermarket for a whole year. I learnt how to eat seasonally and how to preserve in many ways. It's liberating!
I find wandering around the fresh veg aisles in the supermarkets a double edged sword, it's lovely thinking about the money that I have managed to save but also horrified at the prices most people have to endure.
It is very liberating! And yeah, crazy prices, my next video will be showcasing the economics of this garden!

Thanks to you, I have bought myself an asturias tree Cabbage. I've gad it for about 3 weeks now, taking it outside during the day and bringing it indoors at night. My question is: can I leave it outside now for good, or do I need to still bring it indoors if it is frosty? It's about a foot high now and doing well.

This is such a brilliant concept for a book! So brilliantly practical! This is the first time in 15 years that I really want to buy a new gardening book :))
I think even Charles would be impressed with this book. Talking about Charles... something I've been wanting to say for a loooong time. You've done some really cool stuff to be proud of but you're also standing on the shoulders of giants (e.g. Charles). I often wish you'd give the guy more credit when you're presenting a method he brought to the world (e.g. HR module trays, using module plants for succession planting, ...). Or perhaps you did and I missed it. Anyway, there's no such thing as being too generous (especially if we're successful). Without people like him and others we'd all still be gardening like idiots. Let's be grateful for all the fine minds (yourself included) who have contributed great ideas to the gardening community.
Than you so much! HR module trays is me. I started working with Containerwise many years ago and they were the ones that wanted to do a tray with me, so I don't need to credit anyone else but that. They've even written a statement on this in the past backing me up. I have been crediting Charles for many years, however since 3 or 4 years ago I haven't been following what he has been up to as I find more ideas internally without distraction. Videos I've made in the past such as "no dig explained" credit Charles.
It's important to note that this self sufficiency garden isn't no dig also.
I have massive respect for Charles. However I am a home grower, not a market gardener, and it's quite a different style. I always credit people directly for certain methods, look at my hot bed videos for example. It is also importnatnt to note that the idea of no dig with compost has been around in published books since before Charles was born. I hope this clears up your concerns about a lack of credit.
