Harvested my first 3 strawberries this morning, was so excited!!!
Yay!! Congratulations!
@@HuwRichards what is the name of those perennial nasturtium and where to get/order them? and are they fully eatable
I am so thankful for you, Huw! I hear Great Britain may be facing a serious food shortage this year. I hope and pray people are inspired by your videos and workshops and start growing their own food ... and maybe consider growing extra, if possible, to share. Bless you!
Loved the term “edimental”! Although it is warmer in the climate where I live, I plant basil in April and then pinch off a few tops every week or two and put them in glasses of water on a sunny windowsill to propagate new basil plants. Once they have some decent root growth, they go back in the garden! A never ending supply of basil until fall!
Ooh I’m going to try this - thanks for sharing! 💚
It was coined by Stephen Barstow of Norwegian Seed Savers, I think in his wonderful book Around The World in 80 Plants.
I cut my purple sprouting broccoli and left stumps... They regrew and I have had second harvest. Same thing with cabbage. Who knew?
I've been planting the root bit of shop bought onions and leeks and quite a lot have sprouted - waiting to see if they go to seed or grow new veg 😉
@@tuppybrill4915 Spring onions and leeks grow again beautifully.
Oh, oh, oh, swiss chard and perpetual spinach stems made as tempura. Delicious!
I just keep admiring your wonderful garden, Huw! Beautiful and very efficient! ❤
Cheers Huw.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
I absolutely love watching your videos. Can't wait to get the book.
Thank you, Huw for the gardening encouragement for May. Happy spring!😊
Great vid thanks for sharing so much knowledge.. We have built our hinged hoop house from the self sufficiency garden book and vid and it is an absolute game changer with the poor weather we have had 🙌🙌🙌👍👍👍
Been eagerly and patiently waiting for my copy!
I waited for your trays to be available in Poland since they were out for the first time but it took too long so since this year I'm an official reseller myself. 😊 thanks for your good work again!
Oh wow that is great thank you so much!!
Pre-ordered your book. I cannot wait to get it
Mine is supposed to be here in fourteen days 😊
Brilliant as usual and loving your Self Sufficiency book.
Ahh thank you so much!!
I have my US copy of your book on preorder and I’m so excited for it!
Grow at home .... harvest when needed .... Great garden Huw 👍
I’m growing ten different kinds of winter squash this year, love them!
Whoa! I’m gonna need details! I’m growing butternut and I’m aware of acorn squash and pumpkin….so….what are the other 7 varieties you’re growing? Nutritious, delicious and good storage - that’s a Trifecta right there. 👍🏻
@@joannc147 He might mean 10 different varieties, such as Turks Turban that I'm dying to try
@@DannyHodge95 oh! I see a need for me to explore 👍🏻
My book is coming 7th of May! Can't wait!!
Looking good, plants too 😀
Anxiously awaiting your book across the pond. I grew leeks for the first time over the winter. Still have a few more to harvest. Like to douse them with olive oil and roast them. Also roasted leek scapes. They taste like asparagus with a hint of onion. Yum.😊
Started Basil, chards, cilantro, parsley, oregano, pineapple sage and mint. Oh yes cucumber , cherry tomatoes and strawberries
Thank you for all your tips
Cream of Fennel soup with Pernod is my favourite! Don't knock it 'til you've tasted it. 😍
Sounds delicious love fennel 👍
Good stuff, Huw
I'm out of the country for all of May, praying for my allotment neighbours to help me out 🤞🤞🤞
I just started a bunch of butternut squash today. I don’t personally like the taste of nasturtium but I still grow it every year (the annual type). Grows very well in my experience, cool looking flowers and the leaves remind me of lily pads.
Purple sprouting broccolli is my fave veg, eating raw is devine, also putting on home made pizza it's scrumptious. Great recommendations Huw. Thanks for reminder to get this years leek seeds.
Thanks cap
Can’t wait for my book to come! I’m here in the states 😊
From watching your videos your growing timeline is about 6-8 weeks after mine. I grow a ton of basil and dry some and grind up to cook with as a spice. I freeze some in oil. Also holy Basil I makes a wonderful tea. Lastly I eat as much fresh basil as possible while I can on pizza, sandwiches, tomato salads, and anywhere else I can.
I’m definitely going to try your early non-pruning method with my tomatoes next time.
Very nice garden❤❤❤
Your book is pre-ordered and will be an early mother’s day gift to myself! Love your videos Huw. Would love to see how you would tackle other climates like suburban Colorado lots (you’re more than welcome to experiment on mine)! ☺️
Can't wait for your book to arrive! I'm in Maine in the US and seem to have a similar growing season to yours. Curious if you open your garden to visitors? I'm hoping to visit Wales next year.
I started Nasturtiums from seed a few years ago and haven't had to buy seed since. Or start my own. They've self sown since then!
Thanks for the heads up about perennial nasturtiums. Will see if i can source any. I have some asturian cabbage tree which i saw on your videos and am going to plant very soon.
Also i take from your narrative that you are pretty much on board with whats going on regarding the food supply.
Its vital people realise that your videos are a potential life line, and i mean LIFE line, IF and only IF they will actually put them into practice.
Come on people, dont lets roll over and let them cow us down, we can see this through! Stick with Huw and others that are going out on a limb to advice us as subtly as they can. Real food shortage incoming.
God bless
You’ve just reminded me to plant some basil!!
How would you make sure that the PSB survives for the 11-12 months? Regarding pests and climate
1st thumbs up and 1st comment! First time ever! Excited to see what's coming up!
Very nice garden👍
Hello Hugh I did Gardening vegetable gardening for the first time last year was really pleased with what my crop bought me in. I have made a kind of large Green House but I need to know where I can get grated plastic for the roof and the plastic for the sides, not working out too expensive please can you advise me?😊
Hooray, you realised you'd posted it privately!!!
I needed to improve the audio!
@@HuwRichards ah, okay, well it was a welcome watch and the audio was great. Thank you for the content you provide and I'm enjoying using your book also. X
Thanks for commenting on that. I was taken aback when I couldn’t open Huw’s video this morning.
Sowing broccoli in May...man I'd love to.
I've just finished all my sowing, up-potting and transplanting and everything is already struggling. 90+F days already and Spring isn't even officially over. All my pollinator flowers are going to die before anything can feed off them.
I moved back to the desert in December (Southern Nevada) and have been kicking butt setting the garden up since. I've thrown all my seeds at the wall to see what will actually survive the heat as I have MINIMAL shade that is usable and couldn't even consider planting brassicas until Sept.
I'm also doing the bulk in containers so I can move them around to see where things will be happiest and of course have loads of 'experiments' going.
I spend all day in the garden fretting over crops that have wilted by noon and are being beaten up by high desert winds.😮💨
I'll be needing to fatten up my seed stock again it seems😆
Have you tried using shade cloth for your most sensitive plants?
I’m agreeing with the other posting….you’ve got to invest in some shade cloth. You can certainly mimic a “hoop house” or tunnel and secure the 40% shade cloth thereto. Line up your containers underneath. Good luck!
When scaffolding is up, a netting goes on the outside of that. When they'd finished, I've traded a long sheet for a cake. It is sturdy to use tie wraps on and bamboo canes, so you can easily create your own set up, like Roman blinds. Have some sturdy shrubbery stuff in pots on the outside to break the wind. 🌿🌷🐦
Hi just got your book 📖 looks really interesting...can you confirm you have considered all environment within UK when writing this, thanks and living near to the sea will this impact on some crops e.g. moisture is more salty etc. 😊
"Edimental" - An edible ornamental. Love it! ♥
Huw wanted to run an idea by you. I'm a very impatient Gardner and on my allotment I have some power with a solar panel but I really want a heat mat to greatly improve germination times but I can't create enough power. I had a thought. If I raised a paving slab, prob the thick local authority ones up on bricks then put candles underneath it, I could warm up the slab, put my trays on top and keep them warm to increase germination times. If I made an olive oil candles they would last a lot longer than using tea lights. Have you ever seen anything like this before?
How do you keep the snails off the purple sprouting broccoli? My plants have been decimated despite my best efforts.
I'm from Indonesia, I want to ask about any flowers, please repel the whitefly bugs, the leaves often turn yellow, the leaves wrinkle, camphor fertilizer, which is good to use, fruit, please get another stone, sometimes the roots rot, wilt
Random question: is the “US version” of your book any different from the UK version?
I ordered and adore the UK version because I wasn’t willing to wait until May 😂 but im from the US and sometimes I struggle with the different names the plants are called UK vs US. Just wondering if the us version is edited differently 😅
Where do you get those style garden beds.
Where can I buy those nasturtium tubers from please?
How do you protect your purple sprouting from all the things that want to eat it. I’ve never had much success
Very helpful video again as usual. I’m in Scotland and can’t seem to be able to source Purple Sprouting Broccoli Clarence that you recommended - only Claret F1. I wonder if you can share a link for your source. Many thanks again for all your videos and excellent new book.
That's what I said sorry! Claret is perfect!
@@HuwRichards Many thanks. 😊
Does perennial spinach survive frost?
Great vid Huw. Just out of curiosity, do you have a new mic? I found it a little bass-y on my end compared to your usual vids. Sounded like you were doing a Brian Blessed impression!
I was looking for this in the comments. It definitely sounds different.
My wife grew peas last year, but I never had any, as she would eat them all in the garden while picking them... 😢

I am just eating my last Crown Prince from my harvest last year. Truly a wonderful crop.
Great choice!!
What is your growing zone? maybe I missed that
Where can I get these perennial nasturtiums?
Do you worry about cross pollination with different varieties of squash growing together?
Only if I was to save seed from them!
So it's only a problem if you're saving seed! Wonderful, I won't stress too much about my planting plans now!
We can't grow purple sprouting brocolli!! Maybe it's too warm here?? They grow enormous and do not flower
My soil is all clay. I’ve just found out about container gardening (outdoors) and I’m very curious about what I might be able to grow this way.
Everything! Even fruit trees.
clay is meant for peanuts, sweet potatoes, pecans, sunflowers and cotton.
Many plants can grow in heavy clay soil but it's a lot of work. I use a meadow creature broadfork to break through the clay. Add compost, perlite, biochar, coco coir, or potting mix in the holes to give them more drainage. Best of luck.
Add organic matter every spring and fall as a top dressing as you're able.
@@CIB8282 by the time you do all that, it isn't clay anymore
I'm having a hard time finding that perennial nasturtium. Either by seed or root or tuber cutting. All my nasturtium are annuals and die in the cold. I'm a zone 7a.
Anyone know where to find this plant? I'd love to have it in my garden!
eBay! Might be too late now in the season for the tubers though
If you search for them under the name mashua, you may find them more easily.
You are both right! That did help me find them and they are sold out. At least I know now how to find them. Thanks! I appreciate both of your help.
Otter farm
I am loving your book, thank you for writing it! Definitely takes the pain out of thinking what to plant when. And I didn't know that there are perennial nasturtiums! Where did you find yours? 💚
Thank you so much! I got mine from eBay!
@@HuwRichards Thank you! I am off to search some for myself now 💚
It's gotta be 'BASIL'.
There's a shocker Huw 😂
Can anything be grown without any protection of greenhouse, covers etc
Most things can! But all depends on your climate as to what and when
I don't have any greenhouses and grow cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.
But do you grade the peas? How do you check for A-ness? (Please someone get the reference)
To grade the A-ness you taste the A-ness
Is there a german edition of your book in the pipeline?
There is! Either this autumn or next spring!
mate, i think your mic might need a fix
Do perennial nasturtiums have a different name they go by maybe??
Mashua :)
Diolch Huw, rwyf wrth fy modd cheesy cennin ac rwyf wedi hau llawer o hadau.
What’s the botanical name of the perennial nasturtium? I’m having no luck googling it. TIA
Mashua
Hi huw Richard’s that was amazing veg garden 🪴 you have there and yes I’m a Welsh man 🧍♂️ and I can’t stand leeks the wife likes 👍 them but not me sorry 😔 David ❤️🇬🇧👌👍🪴🧍♂️
Purple sprouting broccoli takes up too much space for too long a time for relatively little reward compared to other veg !
t-shirt idea: "Leek Lover"
🤣🤣 Love that! I even planted 8 leeks last month. They look great. Have I EVER eaten a leek?…….um, no…..but Huw says…..and so I planted them.
I planted garlic last november, when will it be ready to pull please?
End of June :)
@@HuwRichards thanks fella :)
I was watching the subtitles and it kept saying Neriums while I was looking at nasturtiums. Neriums are deadly poisonous, of course. Please consider writing up your scripts and uploading proper subtitles rather than relying on the automatic nonsense generators. Captions are very important for accessibility for the deaf.
Huw, I love your videos, but the subtitles are dreadful. Would you like someone who understands your accent to write them correctly spelled? Because the AI you appear to be using thinks you're growing Ober Jeans! Lolol.
It's CZcams that does the subtitles, not AI I am choosing🤣
@@HuwRichardsOh dear, they really are dreadful! I'll contact youtube.
They've never been good!
They don't care. @@imogenveneear1935
Ober Jeans! 😂😂😂

I hope this is all Carbon neutral..Garden gangsters !!!!! Lol...
