Hi, I'm Jason, and my channel is all about making things out of junk. Most of the materials I use in my videos were discarded, or thrown away, destined for landfill, or the bonfire. These videos are not meant as tutorials, they are just to show the way I do things. I hope they will in some way entertain, and maybe help everyone to see the beauty and usefulness of every piece of scrap out there. Happy UpCycling :)
A Completely Different Way To Construct Furniture
I've been trying a few different ways of making furniture out of smaller pieces of scrap. I'm not sure if this method is more, or less work than traditional construction, but it was a lot of fun.

I needed a chessboard fit for a King, or maybe two of them, and Queens, Bishops, etc... The wood is from some old discarded furniture, a mix of walnut and what might be mango wood, but I can't be sure. The piece of brass is a kick plate from the bottom of an old door. I love your channel and you're inspiring me to build more. How much time do you plan your projects?
I don't spend a lot of time planning, just a basic drawing to get an idea of the look I want, then I add to the design as I go along.

I love watching you work in your shop. You remind me so much of my grandfather, he was a builder also. And if I was quiet, I could sit and watch him, and I would watch him for hours. I wanted to thank you for helping me to remember a part of my childhood. It just brings me wonderful memories of my grandfather. I can’t wait to see what you’re going to make next and looking into your shop with all the different cabinets you made. It’s beautiful.

You have taken my idea to a different level. Like you, I'm cutting my scraps into "bricks" to build boards similar to what you just did. But, your idea for the corners, as well as the use of the frame to build around, is mind blowing. I'm definitely going to be building this way! Thank you. :) What did you use to seal the edges of the melamine?
I sealed the edges with car body filler, then just used furniture wax on the surfaces.

Do you have any concerns about the longevity if the cross-grain glue joints?
I've done similar things without any real problems. This project was mainly done as an experiment.

I know this is an older video and so it may not be seen but I'm curious - Why use the drill to bore the pilot holes but a screw driver to put the screws in? Is it because the drill could strip the screw's head, or just personal preference?
