Boston Jazz Voices at Fenway Park in 2006
zhlédnutí 118Před 2 lety
On September 20, 2006, Boston Jazz Voices was at Fenway Park, and we sang The Star Spangled Banner, arranged by Linda Marchi. In actuality what the crowd heard was a recording of us, which was produced for the occasion. This is that recording. I was the director of the group, and I produced and edited the recording, which was specifically designed for Fenway playback. You may note that there is...

Chief in his final hour

On October 28, 2015, my cat Chief had congestive heart failure. In the early morning of Oct 29, I brought him to the emergency veterinarian because he was having trouble breathing all night. They put him in an oxygen box, and gave him Lasix. He was then more comfortable, and active. But the prognosis was bad, so I had them euthanize him. These are his final moments. He was a great cat.
Airwheel Riding Better
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 9 lety
This weekend it was finally nice enough to take the Airwheel out. Here I show you how I can ride now. You can see that it works best when you stand up really straight and steer by tilting your hips rather than by bending your knees. Also, I don't have any towels stuffed in my socks, because there's no need to squeeze the airwheel between my shins.

    The best way to learn is to lean on a car with a partially charged battery so you learn how to control it when it turns off suddenly and you throw it into the car. It is best to use a car that does not belong to you so you dont have to worry about damages. Be sure to ride goofy, all bent over and grab your knees or the handle like when you boss is yelling at you as its more fun! Then show your girl or you mom how brave you are by riding with no helmet or pads because experts dont need all that junk. Dont tie your shoes either to have cool streamers following you. Remember, it all just tricks. Clowns are overpaid learning to ride unicycles.

      +Jane Ash Oh. I should have said in my description that I spent like 5 minutes with those annoying training wheels on before I decided to take them off and record this video. I'm sure I have some video of me using those wheels, but it was very uninteresting. I didn't find them very helpful in developing the real skills necessary to ride. They just prevent you from falling sideways, but that's what learning to ride is all about: not falling sideways.

    • @RichardBronosky
      @RichardBronosky Před 8 lety

      +Jane Ash My videos start out with the training wheels. And yes, +John Paquette is right, it's boring video but was still a fun way to get the hang of the ankle motion for forward and back. You just can't turn. I think they are a good idea, but if you spend more than 1 charge on them you are wasting your time. When you take them off it will be so different and so hard that you will think you took them off too soon and want to put them back on. Don't. That's your indication that you were really not learning anything from using them.

    Do not buy this airwheel product, the battery lasts just for 6 months, then it discharges much faster, needs every 4 KM to charge, and at the end you have to replace the battery, which apparently it costs 1/3 of the price of the device !!!! The battery lasts just for 400-500 charging cycles not 1800 as they declare !! A company of LIARS!! They denied to replace my battery !!! STAY AWAY OF THIS PRODUCT !!!!!

    • @JohnPaquette
      @JohnPaquette Před 8 lety

      +View Viewer! 1800 recharges is, I think, a pretty exaggerated claim, but, frankly, if I only get 500 charges out my Airwheel X8 I'll still consider the Airwheel worth the $550 I paid for it. I've charged mine 200 times over the last year, and it still works great, with no reduction in battery life. How long have you owned your Airwheel? When you discharge it, do you fully discharge it every time? Because that could reduce battery life. I don't think it is appropriate for you to say "STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT!!!!!" We'll make our own decisions, thank, you. Plus, your name is totally anonymous: "View Viewer!" ? Why should we trust you at all? I totally recommend the Airwheel X8, based on my experience. One has to be realistic about what one expects from such a product. My Airwheel X8 has completely met my expectations. It's extremely well built, has good battery management, and it responds great while riding. It's a true pleasure to own. When my battery runs out, I'll then figure out how to replace it. If such costs me $150, I won't be angry. Over $200 would be a bit annoying. With my use, I expect that will be a year or two from now (I don't ride in North American winter).

    Great video! One question: I've been making a research in order to buy my first electric unicycle (kind of a pointless research, actually, because AirWheel is the only brand available here in Brazil). My question is: I've seen a lot of people complaining about a bug that affects many brands, AirWheel included, regarding a bad battery management system (BMS) that may cause the unicycle to turn off spontaneously, potentially causing injury, because the user is thrown faceplant to the ground. Have you ever had such experience with your unit? This may be a dealbreaker for me and force me to wait some years to invest in a different brand or on an upgraded design. Thanks in advance.

    • @JohnPaquette
      @JohnPaquette Před 8 lety

      +Marco Merlin With my Airwheel X8, I have never had a spontaneous turn-off. That said, there have been times when I expected too much of the unit, that is, I tried to go up a hill too fast, in such case the unit didn't beep at me, but just went too slowly, and it couldn't catch me as I leaned forward up the hill. My understanding of this behavior is that the beeping the unit makes is somehow based on speed, rather than on required power output. So, when you go up a hill, you need more power, but the speed is below the beeping threshold. So yes, in such case, I just stepped off the thing and it tumbled. Pretty easy to catch myself in that case. Now I go slower uphill. I have never had an instant turn-off. I have never had any flaky behavior from the unit. I'm very happy with my Airwheel X8. I would CERTAINLY buy another Airwheel X8 if the quality were good as my current one. My feeling is that it is built like a tank.

    • @JohnPaquette
      @JohnPaquette Před 8 lety

      +7641955 It took me about 5 hours of practice across about 5 sessions. And, of course, the longer you ride, the better you get. But after 5 hours I was good enough to ride on sidewalks and avoid pedestrians as long as the sidewalk wasn't too crowded. Now, after riding for the whole summer, I can ride very slowly (which I must do if the sidewalk is clogged) and get around obstacles very adeptly.

    • @rogierjansen
      @rogierjansen Před 8 lety

      5 hours is quite a lot. If you are familiar with balance sports like snowboading, wakeboarding, skateboarding and other stuff, you get the hang of it within an hour....

    • @JohnPaquette
      @JohnPaquette Před 8 lety

      +striker98 Perhaps younger people can learn it faster. But I'm over 50 years old. It took me 5 hours, in 4 or 5 sessions--at least before I felt confident riding it on sidewalks, rather than in parking lots and tennis courts. But I also recently learned to ride the Ripstik Caster board, and that took me less than an hour. So I think there's an important difference between the Airwheel and those balance sports boards you mentioned. I also own a Vew-Do Indy balance board, and that easy to learn to stay on. So I'm quite coordinated and athletic for my age. I think that perhaps the reason it took 5 hours rather than 1 hour is that the Airwheel is an active, powered system, and you must learn to predict how it will respond to what you do (and how it responds is not pure physics, but is the result of a sophisticated computer algorithm). You must *learn* how to trust it. As well, there are lots of riding situations that you will never experience within your first hour of riding. Now that I know how to ride it. I'd say that the motion of riding it reminds me most of is skiing.

    Is it hard to learn

    • @JohnPaquette
      @JohnPaquette Před 8 lety

      +7641955 It takes persistence. In the beginning, you will fall off a lot. The Airwheel will get scratched unless you apply some kind of cushioning to it. Wrist guards and gloves are probably a good idea. Shin guards, or towels stuffed in your socks, are essential, to protect your inner shins, otherwise they will get really bruised. Start riding by getting up off a bench or chair. Then start by mounting the Airwheel while supporting yourself using a lamp-post. Only after you master riding by starting in both of the above ways should you try mounting without any help from benches or posts or fences. If you are on a smooth surface, straighten up and lock your knees (not like I started). Focus on using your ANKLES to steer, by tilting your feet left and right. It's actually very subtle. A tiny tilt makes a big difference. Stop riding by reaching down to grab the Airwheel, then jump off. That's easiest. Bend your knees to deal with bumps. But otherwise, the straighter you stand, the better you will ride. To go faster, send your feet back a bit. To go slower, send your feet forward a bit.

    Hi John, I have just purchased my X8 and waiting impatiently for it to arrive ! :D Watched all your videos and want to thank you for sharing with us :) One question I do have, have you had to change the tyre yet ? I realise the wear and tear will depend on the surface it is used on but I was just wondering how long have you had it for and if you have noticed any significant wear on the tyre yet ?

      Doshunn Ramchurn I've had it since October. Unless I get a puncture I don't see why the tire won't last for a long time. I've probably ridden 50 or 60 miles on the thing so far, but that's just a guess. Keep your tire inflated to spec (40 to 50 pounds) and it should last well. Don't let it get low. I have found my Airwheel to be surprisingly durable. I've fallen off it 5 or 10 times, and it just goes tumbling, but it always seems to work just fine afterward. Just the case gets scraped and scuffed. You may wish to apply some protective padding to it to protect it. You WILL fall off. I discovered last week that if you try to go up a hill too fast, it might fail to beep at you before running out of strength (not battery charge, but the power to push you). The result is that it hits a speed limit and you gradually lean forward until it's obvious it will not catch you, so you step off. It tumbles, and you get a new scrape on the case.

      Yes I do realise that I am in for a world of hurt for the first few lessons.. Haha.. I will try to jump off and let the X8 take most of the beating.. Maybe I will carry it uphill until I am 100% used to its speeds. But thanks for the great tip ! ;)

      I recommend using the orange strap when you are starting out. I didn't, and I think my AirWheel got a bit beat up because I wasn't able to catch it in some cases. If I had to do it over again, I'd find some way to wrap the X8 in cheap leather or something to keep it from getting scratched.

      I've just bought the protective foam cheap from banggood.com - £3 something in all. Hope that helps :)

    facebook.com/chin.lin.313 MY Friends, please help to share this amazing experience I have. This is a rip off. I fell hard on my back, and the back of my helmet hit the concrete floor, when the hub motor of my fancy Airwheel X8 stopped working while I was braking from 10+km/h. The X8 then quit working. I only had it for 3 days. I decided to take a look at the inside and see if there's anything I could do to repair it. After all, I am capable of rebuild my dirt bike's 4 stroke engine, complicated gearbox, and am a partner of a Prototype company that handle R&D and prototyping projects from reputable consumer electronics companies. BIG SURPRISE!!!!! I have seen all kinds of poorly made products in my career, but this is an eye opener! Everything inside is fixed in place temporarily with thermal stick glue, which came off easily. Batteries in the battery pack is not Japanese as advertised. Wires are dangerously under gauged and guarantee a high risk of burn through during use and charging. The fault of my X8, was a tiny but critical metal part in the hub motor which broke off under load, because it was made with wrong and undersized material, obviously to cut cost. Estimated cost of manufacturing this RIP OFF, is about $120 US dollars per at max, or $80 if they really go low. $10 board $25 explosive batteries $65 hub motor and tire (Tire is $15) $15 The "Distinctive Look with High-End Essence", plastic injected, plastic cover. $4 to put everything together $1 thermal glue stick (hahaha!) $0 Quality assurance $0 R&D These things, especially the X8, retails $500 dollars US online. $650 in Amazon. In reality, they deserve a retail value of $200 to $250. In fact, they deserve nothing because these are potential BONE BREAKERS. I don't expect Segway quality when I pay $500 for a Chinese designed product, but I also didn't expect to almost break my vertebrae, tailbones. This is taking the unacceptable low quality to another whole new level. This is 20 years ago's Made In China quality !! YOU, Airwheel. Your webpage is fancy, beautifully made, your products trademarked. Nonetheless, you would not throw in another $10 per unit to spec your products properly. $500 dollars, is not a small amount of money. One can spend a couple hundred over a nice bicycle and be sure its head tube would not break apart while riding at 15km/h. That's minimal safety guaranteed. $500 dollars smart phone, should not explode in your face. $500 dollars coffee machine, won't burn up. $500 dollars, can buy you a DVD player, a microwave machine, an espresso maker, a whole lot of consumer products with exchange for a full tank of gas, and a big take away at Burger King. So, why a $500 self balancing unicycle (oh what a fancy phrase) capable of traveling at the speed of 18km/h, has an internal that's held together by thermal glue, and a under spec'ed hub motor that can fail without warning? My friends. If you are into this thing, I don't blame you. After all, I bought one, it's fun, and we are all into futuristic thingy. BUT, make sure you wear a full face helmet, a full off road bike suit and gears, and prepare to BREAK some bones while riding, because it comes with guarantee. As for the fancy marketing image of having this thing take you to mass transit on your way to work..... Just don't do it. You do not want to fuck yourself up in front of people while failing on the road. Arrived at the office with a broken wrist, dislodged jaws, knees without knee caps, broken through PRADA apparel.

      golferchin76 Yikes! Could you post a video and some photos of the internal workings, since you've taken it apart? Perhaps you can recommend some custom improvements which might increase safety? I've had nothing but great results from the Airwheel X8, but now I'm a bit worried. Perhaps I should take it apart for inspection. . .

      John Paquette First of all. Some factories copied the American version such as the expensive Segway. It was for the big domestic China market. And it was selling like tons tons of these. Only 1-2 factories produce these products. You can say Airwheel has same supplier as Solowheel, and many other brands Keep in mind, that they were made for the Chinese market, where there's no regulation at all. No quality assurance. Therefore the nice appearance, but lousy internals. They sell on ebay, webpages, amazons. People starts to jumps on them, going down steps..... These things definitely were not made for panic stop practice. These are for people to just cruise around.
