Well, I just went and did it. I just bought the Airwheel X8 off eBay. It should be here around March 30th. I hope I have as much fun with it as you are :)
So.. I finally bought one and got it in the mail a few days ago. I tried taking it out for the first time today and it is NOWHERE NEAR as easy as everyone makes it look. I ended up going to Walmart and bought some shin guards to protect my inner shins, but I can see right now that this is DEFINITELY going to take some serious practice to master.
Starguard ! Yes. It's quite tricky to learn. But it is very rewarding once you are good at it. See my other video for some learning tips. Riding it is about muscle memory, it takes some commitment, and the failures will lead to successes. 4 or 5 hours of riding around parking lots or tennis courts should be about enough time.
I just ordered one off of eBay. It should be a my doorstep within a week or so. I just hope that I have as much fun with it as you guys all seem to have
I've had no exploding problems since I got it. It has taken quite a few tumbles, and that has not affected how well the batteries work. I have nothing to say except good things about the quality of this product. Many people have warned me about the various kinds of defects they have known. I have not experienced any of them.
It's been snowy here, so I haven't ridden it in several months. In cold weather, I was getting a range of about 8 miles, but that included some steep hills. I expect better range in warm weather on the flats.
Great video! One question: I've been making a research in order to buy my first electric unicycle (kind of a pointless research, actually, because AirWheel is the only brand available here in Brazil). My question is: I've seen a lot of people complaining about a bug that affects many brands, AirWheel included, regarding a bad battery management system (BMS) that may cause the unicycle to turn off spontaneously, potentially causing injury, because the user is thrown faceplant to the ground. Have you ever had such experience with your unit? This may be a dealbreaker for me and force me to wait some years to invest in a different brand or on an upgraded design. Thanks in advance.
+Marco Merlin With my Airwheel X8, I have never had a spontaneous turn-off. That said, there have been times when I expected too much of the unit, that is, I tried to go up a hill too fast, in such case the unit didn't beep at me, but just went too slowly, and it couldn't catch me as I leaned forward up the hill. My understanding of this behavior is that the beeping the unit makes is somehow based on speed, rather than on required power output. So, when you go up a hill, you need more power, but the speed is below the beeping threshold. So yes, in such case, I just stepped off the thing and it tumbled. Pretty easy to catch myself in that case. Now I go slower uphill. I have never had an instant turn-off. I have never had any flaky behavior from the unit. I'm very happy with my Airwheel X8. I would CERTAINLY buy another Airwheel X8 if the quality were good as my current one. My feeling is that it is built like a tank.
I love mine. I often use it to get to work. 2.5 miles each way (to the bus stop) then I bring it on the bus to downtown Boston. Just be careful on the sidewalks with pedestrians. We don't want Airwheels to get banned because someone had an accident with a pedestrian.
John Paquette Happy upcoming Birthday, John. I'm 55 and I've had my X8 for just about 24 hours now - over 2 separate days. I have been practicing indoors with a couple of forays out into the driveway. I can now fully appreciate how well you did on your first trial run with the X8. As you said, it isn't easy. But I can already see improvement and I think one day I will ride adequately. Thanks for the tip regarding the bruised legs. Adult soccer shin guards from Walmart $5.95 for the pair, and well worth the trouble. What psi are you running your tire at, please? I have enjoyed both of the X8 videos you've made, and on a slightly sentimental note, you remind me of an old friend of mine.
That's awesome. I think my tire is at about 60psi. I found it was really helpful to take mine to a tennis court, and if there are any benches nearby, they can make getting onto it a lot easier. Start from a seated position and just stand up onto the Airwheel and try to keep going straight away from the bench. I really recommend FIRST learning to ride from a "crutch start" (using some object like a bench or lamp-post to hold onto and then letting go) before trying too hard to do "cold starts" (starting without any assistance from standing objects or benches). Cold starts are much easier once you can already stay on the thing for at least 5 seconds. Yeah, I should get some shin guards.
John Paquette 60 psi sounds high at first blush. Should you discover it is otherwise, please update. Also 5 seconds feels like forever at this stage. LOL. Oh, and the shin-guards were only $4.95. I got the number wrong. And I have no bruise pains, only muscle aches. Cheers.
I want to thank you for taking the time to make this video. I want to thank your cat for its participation as well. :)

My Q8 didn't have extra cardboard LOL
Yeah. I think that was either to cover up info on the box, or to protect the contents a bit more.
how is it so far after 4 months? any signs of deterioration yet? hows the battery life doing and whats the average range?

+Eddie Liu I've owned it for a year, and I haven't noticed any reduction in range. I've ridden it all summer, about 5 or 6 miles a day.
