"Upcycled" Bike Light! | Turning my old, worn mountain bike cassette into a creative light!
This cassette came from my first mountain bike, the 2017 Giant Talon 3, which I fixed up and restored in another video (linked below). I rode this cassette into the ground with 100s of miles of trail riding, but when it came time to replace it, I held onto it, knowing I could repurpose it eventually.
The inspiration for this project in particular came from the Pizza Pedal'r restaurant in Denver, CO, which my family and I visited on a recent ski trip. I distinctly remember the cool and unique bike inspired decor, and I'm sure I will pull from other designs I saw there for future inspiration!
This video is not meant to be a complete step-by-step guide, but rather a glimpse into how I made the light - that said, comment below if you have any specific questions or have suggestions for future upcycling projects! I look forward to sharing my future creations with you!

I love these type of bike hacks...very cost effective, simple, and easy!
Fun video and nice progression over those jumps!
Thanks! Looking to go back soon and see if I’ve retained anything from last year! 😅
Mosquitos bad, my dude?
Nah, they can’t fly that fast 💨
Nice!

Leb is fun. That rock roll is super fun to Roll and just huck as a drop!
I'll need to give that a shot next time I'm there!
@@thmtbit’s pretty damn smooth! I have a video on my page hitting it!
The steepness of this slab at 2:37 cannot be captured in video!
Right? It's a doozy - hoping to make it back to Leb soon and hit it again!
I love the Oregon dunes
Just had to look that up for myself - those look crazy! So cool next to the water!
Yes and the driver flipped it in the first minute a lot of fun. Going 30 then all of a sudden you ar on the roof
Oh man, we didn't have quite that much fun 😂
Some of the most fun you can have, drove my buddies’ last year and now I want my own 😅
Tell me about it! 🔥
My brother did that too😂

Hi Tyler
Hey Bron! Thanks for watching 😃
What city and state?
Lake Elmo, MN - Just east of St. Paul! Lots of fun trails around worth checking out!
Promo sm 😇
Dude awesome riding. I have the core 2 myself, got is on sale for $1999......can't beat the price for what you get IMO. Also, love the Outbound setup, I run the same on mine! Question for you, chip flipped or no? Great to see someone else enjoying the Jeffesy and shredding it like it should be!
Thanks a lot! I flipped the chip to the low position for my trip to Duluth and Redhead since there was so much spicy tech, but otherwise I typically stick to the high position for better pedaling mechanics. Hoping to visit more downhill parks in the future to give me a reason to flip it back to the low position and really test its limits!
Nice. However would have been nice if you would have told us the length you cut the pieces of wood.
Good point - I suppose that would help! I'll add the dimensions in the video's description!
Do the 20" pieces go at the bottom or at the top? That is, are the 20" holding the bike tire or are they at the base of the bike stand? Nice build and thank you for sharing. I am currently looking to build a simple bike stand.
@@orbeuniversity thanks for watching, and good clarifying question! The 20" pieces run parallel to the wheel - I just added this to the description of the video too. Have fun building your own!
Nice video! Hey are these trails open now? Do they close for hunting or for the cold season? I’m from the twin cities and want to take a trip down to ride that area. 🚲🚲🚲
Thanks for watching! The trails are still open as far as I know. As for them shutting down for hunting season, I can't speak to that since I haven't ridden them that late into the year. One the trails freeze they should remain open for winter! Definitely worth the trip!
I live by sun fish and it’s my favorite place to shred🚵♂️
It’s so cool to see someone that rides the same place I do. Thanks for responding!
Such a fun trail!! I need to get back there again before the season ends!
Love the ET fade 😂
I appreciate it - I spent more time on that than I probably should've but I'm glad it turned out.
Question about the jeffsy, I just bought same bike (hasn’t shipped yet). I wanted to get your thoughts on climbing and how it handles. Video is good too! Thanks
Thanks for watching! I absolutely love it! It was a massive upgrade from my cheap hardtail but I couldn't be more pleased with it. It was an adjustment going to 29" wheels too, but it flows over chunky terrain super well, and handles like a dream. The dropper post has been huge in terms of climbing ability, and everything I've been tasked with climbing, I've been able to push through and make it up. The shock has a lockout feature to stiffen the back end on the climbs so more force can go into the pedals versus being dissipated through the shock, so that helps a ton too. Any other questions and I'm happy to answer! Have fun!!
Thanks for the info. This will be my first full suspension and 29er. We have some downhill trails and a lot of single track so wanted to make sure it wasn’t horrible on the climbs.
@@davevaca6815 no problem! Yeah that makes sense, it's a nice in between in terms of geometry and suspension travel so you're not totally gassed after the climbs!
Bro where is this place?
Right around the Twin Cities in Minnesota! Our dirt riding days are limited! 🥶
Let's fix that!
In Theory!
It always makes sense in my head! 😅
I love Outbound lights as well. I just used the helmet light last night for the first time and it's Awesome! Night ride is fun and interesting adventure. Great video.
I appreciate it, thanks for watching! Such a unique perspective at night, even with familiar trails!
@@thmtb You're welcome! I agree there! I also ride in MN too. I usually ride at Leb, WLM, or Murphy mostly.
@@compgameboy779 I love Leb and Murphy! I haven't ridden WLM but will add that to my list!
Good job Ty!
Tight sick AF corners! Did you lose any elbow skin on some of trees. Cut way away from trail I see!
@@user-br3mu6fw4y Thanks! How'd you know? Haha yeah, I've been known to get a little too close to trees!
Love it! I enjoy hearing you talk and geek out in the background! Helpful to hear you explain things as well like line and gully! Yay for vocabulary!
Thanks! Glad to hear! Trying my best to make the videos as relatable and understandable as possible!
Great video. Good job representing the old school hand cut side of Upper Hixon. Was on War Eagle for the first time last week and wimped out on the drop as the rocks were super wet that day (terrible excuse). Was thinking about taking the gully but was afraid I would smash my cranks. I'm still riding through November if possible.
Thank you! Yeah, my pedal caught a rock the first time I attempted the gully which really sketched me out haha. With the way the weather is looking hopefully I can ride for a few more weeks too!
Come to Duluth. The Piedmont black and double black trails will be a true test of your skills!
Heck yeah! My friend and I drove up to Duluth and further to Redhead earlier this summer! Here's that video! czcams.com/video/Nlr4QFID78g/video.htmlsi=KJ4o1TY9_3EXbeL3 It was insane, the most tech I've ever encountered! So much fun, can't wait to go back!
Full video: czcams.com/video/JZAFTi8ZvSk/video.htmlsi=KAqPyFeSPAGKghh2
I use the same combo. I still can't night ride alone unless I start the ride during day light hours. Group night rides are no problem at all.
Agreed! I've been starting before dark too. I think night group rides would be so much fun, hoping to join one soon!
*Nobody* *Me* "Wheres the jumpscare?"
I saw two deer while riding and almost lost it 😂
@@thmtb Ha
“No thanks” at the hip gap had me 💀 definitely felt that before. Honestly a fun hit though, definitely recommend it.
Totally! Always feels pretty spooky getting sideways in the air, but it's probably not as bad as it looked (famous last words). Definitely need to get back over there and send it!
Nice bro! I miss Lebanon hills 😆
Thanks! One of my favorites in the Twin Cities!
@@thmtb me and my Minnesota bike guys hitting Moab and AZ end of November, maybe u can join us haha
Sounds crazy fun! Moab is on my list! Haven't had many chances to get outside of MN with the bike- hopefully soon!

I think we may have run into each other at the Sunfish trailhead. How was your ride?
Yes that was definitely me! The ride was great, such a unique trail system with so many features packed in! A little dry with our recent drought, but had an awesome time! I appreciate the tips starting out, it certainly made navigating easier. Planning to return in the near future!
Did that dude in the blue have a Code Red Mountain Dew? 😅
Haha! Red Powerade, fortunately! We would have had a rough day otherwise 😂
@thmtb Totally, my stomach hurt just thinking about that.. anyways man, I liked your video. Thinking next time I'm up there, i might switch it up from riding Spirit and check Piedmont out.
@@HalfpipeOfOdinthanks a lot! Definitely worth checking out! And next time I'm up there I plan to visit Spirit Mountain for the first time!
Yo bro I love this trail
One of my favorites! So much fun!
Good stuff man, getting the big boy trails B.O.B and DM on your first visit here! Piedmont is my favorite trail system in Minnesota and the trails here have to be seen in person to know just how technical and difficult they really are. Your buddy has the exact same bike that I learned to ride on in Duluth, 2014 Trek Marlin 6 in lime green, seeing him charge down the rock slab on B.O.B brought back some good memories. Looking forward to your video at my local trails at Redhead MTB Park.
Thanks a lot! Had a blast and really pushed our limits! Can't wait to visit again soon!
LIKE A BOSS 🔥
Is it better to have a rear spring and front shocks on your motian bike compared to only having front shocks
I rode a hardtail (only front spring) until last year, and was getting a lot of rear flat tires on the trails. The rear suspension helps soak up those big hits, especially on really chunky trails as shown in the video. Ultimately it comes down to preference, but I like to think having rear suspension opens up doors to hitting more aggressive terrain!
I'm a skater and I've got the basics down but recently tried doing BMX didn't realize that when you get thrown off a bike you get back up with chunks missing I hit a curb and ripped a chunk out of my knee
I definitely learned that the hard way too! Comes with the territory but the incidence of falls has steadily decreased for me the more I improve my technique! I hope you stick with it!
@thmtb definitely man I'm going to invest in some safety equipment this time, I'd say getting hurt just made me want to learn even more stay safe out there tearing up those trails man😁😁
Absolutely! Recently got some new Fox knee pads and they've been a lifesaver!
@thmtb any recommendations that wouldn't break the bank or is it like a get what you pay for kinda thing
@@EzraBridger167 the ones I just bought were a bit pricey but I do think you get what you pay for. When I was just starting out I went to a sporting goods store and got cheap pads there. Those were sufficient for what I needed and lasted a long time!
Nice
Thanks!
