STRONGEST aurora in 20 years - G5/KP9 geomagnetic storm - Herne Bay, Kent, UK - 10th & 11th May 2024
An incredible geomagnetic storm hit Earth just after 16:30 UTC on the 10th of May and helped to generate once-in-a-lifetime showings of the aurora borealis over the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe with this timelapse starting at 21:24 BST which is when naked eye visibility began for the aurora and ending at 02:27 BST when cloud began to roll in. The crescendo of the aurora began at 23:10 BST and reached peak intensity at 23:30 BST with the aurora corona overhead and the aurora stretching in every direction to the eye as well as visible vibrant red to the NE and to the west.
It was an incredible sight to the eye with massive thick bright white pillars erupting out from the oval and stretching all the way to the zenith, and these filled the sky for at least an hour before beginning to subside slightly and the oval moved back further north after ending up ~20/30 degrees above the SE horizon. The storm was comparable to previous storms in 2003 and 1989 which also caused widespread auroras and was something that many people may not see again in their lifetimes. KP9 levels were reached just after 21 UTC on Friday and 00 UTC on Sunday. It is likely that this aurora event was the most documented in history for the UK.

Near continuous thunder from active thunderstorm (Zoom H1n audio) - 2nd May 2024 - Herne Bay, Kent
zhlédnutí 532Před 2 měsíci
This video is mainly meant to be a listening experience rather than a visual experience. The first 34 seconds are purely audio from the Zoom H1n recorder as I was setting it up. The storms that night were incredible with at least four different storm setups passing to my north and south from 23:30 BST to 04:00 BST. An upper low around the Benelux region helped to draw in an unstable Theta-E plu...

This is a compilation of time-lapses together of the great display of the aurora that occurred from 1710 UTC all the way until at least midnight of the 6th. The display of the aurora also included a variety of differing sub-auroral aspects such as STEVE almost directly overhead as well as SAR which can be seen near STEVE as a red band in some pictures. These arcs can be mainly seen towards dark...

Supercell storm rotation with a forming mesocyclone & wall cloud - Herne Bay, Kent - 01/09/23

I recommend using the timestamps below in the description for better explanations of each stage of the video. An interesting thunderstorm ran into a SW-NE convergence line over Medway and veered slightly east after steadily moving NNE which prompted me to try and utilise the clear slot I had into the storm as I arrived at Hampton Pier at about 17:15 BST. The last strikes were just before 17:16 ...
Imported thunderstorms with the loudest thunder I have ever heard - Herne Bay, Kent - 19/08/2023

Storm Betty to the southwest of the UK allowed for a Theta-E plume of unstable air to move into the SE with values up to 60C although the air was very humid and saturated which meant intracloud lightning was almost impossible to see and storms had initially struggled to electrify on land due to this saturation. Things seemed to kick off after midnight with first some elevated rumbles being hear...

Strike at 01:06 The loudest crack of thunder I've ever heard occurred from the second round of thunderstorms last night at 01:37 BST which all seemed to clip Kent rather than hit elsewhere. There was another positive lightning strike just before this clip which I believe you can hear as it fades in but I'll have to examine the footage further. 60C Theta-E values were seen to be across the SE al...

Impressive multicellular storm structure with rear flank downburst seen - Herne Bay, Kent - 09/05/23

One of the most impressive shows structurally from a storm I've seen during the month of May. The rear flank downburst can be seen between 06:24 & 07:42 on the right-hand side which I have never seen from a storm in the UK before. The conditions under that downburst were over the sea so sadly nothing could be gathered from it but I imagine a deluge would have occurred! A clear split between the...
