    Nice restoration DJ. It looks great and they definitely have a place in the shop. I have my late fathers Craftsman 3/4 drive ratchet that he used to work on the farm equipment with. The only farm equipment i have is a 1939 Ford 9N butbi ise dads old ratchet to remove axle nuts and does a wonderful job. I was missing 5 of his sockets and couldn't find them at his house but i was looking online and discovered that NAPA auto is discontinuing their Evercraft line of tools and have them heavily discounted. I found the five 3/4 drive sockets and they cost me between $5-$8 each. I've since been back to NAPA and purchased a set of 12 screwdrivers, a 3/8 drive impact screwdriver, a 3/4" drive breaker bar and 2 sets of metric and SAE 3/8 drive crows feet. I don't know if you have a NAPA in your area but it's definitely worth checking out or you can check them out online.

    Do you have access to a bench grinder with a wire wheel, and a pan with parts cleaner for jobs like this?

    • @djstoolrestorations
      @djstoolrestorations Před dnem

      I do use the wire wheel on this one, and I do have a large and small parts cleaner but I do not like using them, the chemical I have in them is more caustic than carb cleaner, at least it is on my skin, and yes I know I can wear gloves but the carb cleaner does not affect me but the parts cleaner does, and I can not find anything locally that works any better

    I clean a lot of files and have found over the years that degreasing then electrolysis tank, wire brush [brass suede leather brush] back into the tank, wire brush again, repeat if crud still coming out then then oil up and store in waxed paper. The trick is to weed out the junk before you buy. Some of the best files have been used for stirring paint or are clogged up solid with aluminum. To shift aluminum, soak in caustic soda and it dissolves out overnight. I have enough for several generations of my family .... ok I just love doing it and I'm a bit of a hoarder !

Just today, I went to a flea market and bought quality used tools that were rusty, dirty, greasy etc. I spent on average $3 per tool, cleaned them, removed surface rust ( no pitting) lubricated them, into good USA-made working tools.

      @@djstoolrestorations I just wasn't sure if letting it dry like you do before waxing was necessary. Going to restore a 6" Jamestown NY crescent wrench with my son this weekend. Its rusty and has a bent handle but it's great besides that. Will be a good one to get him started and used to using and working with tools. Will be his 1st wrench in his collection and a good one! Since we'll be wire brushing it I figured we'd blue it. Might just blue the inside of the handle and leave the rest but not sure yet. It'll be up to him in the end. Either way I want to oil it after which I don't normally do.
