Red Bat Rescue!
zhlédnutí 16KPřed 3 lety
Biologists, Doug Collicutt and John Morgan, chanced upon a Red Bat (Lasiurus borealis) in a spot of trouble, tangled in some barbed wire! So we untangled it and released it after taking some pictures and video. It's so rare to actually see one of these beautiful little animals we thought it was worth posting this short video, enjoy.
Inside a Hornet's Nest
zhlédnutí 64KPřed 3 lety
A view inside a nest of Bald-faced Hornets. My neighbours in southeast Manitoba had a hornet's nest too close to their house, it had to be removed. After it was sprayed I dissected it to show people the inside. Bald-faced Hornets (Dolichovespula maculata) are not technically "hornets", they are true "wasps". The inside of the nest is an amazing structure.
Egg to Polyphemus Moth

Just Snakes

Every spring in Manitoba's Interlake region red-sided garter snakes pour out of holes and caves where they have spent winter below the frost line. Males wait by these hibernacula entrances for females to emerge, swarming over them to try and mate. This makes for some great snake-viewing. I've done other educational snake videos, so here's some clips just for fun, no preaching, no lessons, just ...

Akumal Snorkeling
zhlédnutí 20KPřed 9 lety
While on vacation in Akumal, Mexico I recorded a couple of hours of video on my GoPro camera while snorkeling. This video is the best 9 minutes whittled out of that. I mounted the camera on a 2 m monopod, so could get the camera quite close to the turtles and fish without annoying them too much. Most of the critters in Akumal Bay are quite used to people snorkeling anyway, as this is a very pop...

That was so cool! Thanks for uploading :)
Just a little advice, leave the captions up a little longer.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You just disappeared for 2 years and then just came out of nowhere.
Actually found one last night on my Front porch. It's a female by your video. Beautiful, a little lighter in color. I guess depending on area. This was a slightly lighter brown. Sort of sand color. One of the biggest months I've seen.
Wow Good
That was a great amazing video man. Very informative on how fast they grow, which I needed. While draining to clean the gunk on the bottom of our Coy fish pond a few days ago I noticed movements and things taking quick trips to the surface and gulping air before darting back to the sludge on the bottom (leaves, Coy Poop and who knows what else, some of it growing I think). So I got one of our fish nets and started dragging it thru the sludge. With each pass I'd scoop up at least 3 to a dozen or more tadpoles. I thought they were frogs at first because we had been hearing a lone male croaking out there every day and night the last few weeks looking for a mate. Happens every spring. But once I got a look at these guys in clear water I realized they were Salamander Larvae, and probably the spotted or Tiger variety we have locally in S.E. Idaho. I netted hundreds of them (pond needed cleaning bad and was a vibrant environment for them it appears, though no frog tadpoles found. probably eaten.) at varying stages of development. Now have only a few dozen left, some died from capture stresses and lots of small ones have been eaten and maybe some to nighttime critters sniffing around here for something to eat (home is in the country outside of city, so far, still.) I was hoping to get as many as possible released back into the pond in the next couple of days before they all ate each other or something else happens to them. Fascinating creatures and want to preserve as many as possible. Pond has a section the fish can't get in that is used to filter the water being pumped above it and will probably turn them loose there. We might try to raise a few also to ensure some make it to maturity. The ones we caught as kids would be like yours when we caught them, gills and webbing on the tail. they would remain that way as long as we kept them them in ditch water (and fed), but any we put into our small city treated faucet water would very quickly start transforming into land ready Tigers. I suspect it was the chlorine or whatever else they used that caused it to happen so fast. I've seen very large ones swimming in flooded gravel pits that still had gills and tail webbing, and I'm wondering how long do you suspect they can remain that way? I've read some species can have very long life spans, up to 55 years. Curiosity abounds. Again, thank you for a well done video, wish I'd thought to document my find from day 1too. I will do some documenting on any we decide to raise though.
I love your video ❤ your videoing technique is spot on! It was very calming to watch ~ Thank you🦋
So beautiful little guy !! Thanks for rescue 😀🦇
This is good Im learning for science
Thank you for such an informative video. The close ups were so helpful in my understanding.
This is so cool
from which instars, caterpillar start to feed?
They feed from the 1st instar onward, right after emerging from the egg.
when the salamander ate his sister he was like "bro i ate her cause u barely feed me😤"😂😂
thank you so much for this video! i found some wood frog eggs and having never raised a frog from egg before, i was worried my babes were dead, but it looks like theyre just tired from hatching. this vid was very helpful and relieveing to see that this behavior is normal :)!
i miss this
That Was a fortnite moment 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
The larger winged ones look more like termites, it’s crazy because I was just reading about the difference between the two because I’m having a lot of ant flys flying in my basement. It said if you see termites you should be concerned for your property being damaged.
Great video! I found a male poly moth on my garage floor a few days ago. I hope he finds a mate.
What if they are in a lake just like this
Lol Salamanders and axalotls are the same thing 😂
So very nice

Nestled eggs hornet
Wow nice, thank you for the video and information :) Are they gonna survive in nature if they were grown in an aquarium? 👀
Sure, they're little robots, they're programmed to do what they need to do. They transform, switch to eating insects and away they go.
Congratulations on a beautiful baby girl!
Last chance to look at me, Eggtor.
Great video!
Spaghetti 🍝 like.
Doug! You’re the best. Thank you for sharing this beautiful process with us.
It's not in my interest for Egg To Salamander to die at this time
I used to find their cocoons in the winter and then put them in the screen porch. When they emerged, the females would draw in males and mate through the screen. I had planted a sugar maple tree and gathered branches from it to feed the hatching eggs 1st instar larvae. I did this 1974-1982. Cranbrook Museum Nature Center put in a moth rearing cage in response to my successes. I was a long term volunteer there. I built clay models of the stages of development and won a prize in my Junior High Science fair two times, East Hills. I had created an insect collection and had perfect examples of this species from those i raised. One amazing thing happened, i forgot to put in new leaves for one brood and the catterpillars ate dried maple leaves that stunted their growth. A tiny cocoon was made and a Polyphemus moth with a 2" wingspan emerged! Even under great hardship they complete metamorphosis. I illustrated the moth and its stages for Cranbrook and they printed the drawings in ink on the museum signs to teach how the moth developes.
Was swimming in a river in Idaho a few years ago when a few of these guys swam up to me and attached to my arm. I felt so tickled, and loved watching them swim around like mermaids, but then I had to move them to a plant so they could complete their metamorphosis. A few hours later I came back to only the discarded exoskeletons on the plants.
they’re beautiful. getting one of these tattooed on me in the near future, i can’t wait <3
cool, but isn't everything inside the nest considered poisoned, even if dead and feeding animals could also be poisoned?
This was a real cool video. Toward the end, you can hear the crows 🐦⬛😋😋😋 🤔🤷🏻♂️😂😂😂😂
HELP SUM1 !!!! I found a green caterpillar in October. It’s January 18 it hatched yesterday it appears to be one of those poly something something’s I noticed you did a video on the same moth a few years back. My question is what do I feed this thing there’s snow everywhere outside should I just release it or will the cold kill it if I keep it what do I feed it? It’s been 24 hours, it’s netted laundry bag 👍so it’s fine I just don’t know what to do for food please help
I just found one of these as a caterpillar in October. It’s now January 18 and the damn thing hatched yesterday there’s snow outside everywhere no green on no trees do I release it?? it’s so cold outside. I’m not sure if it will kill it. I’ve had it for 24 hours with no food. I don’t know what to feed it. There’s no leaves anywhere around me only pine trees have green on them. I’m in Boston.
Thank you for a narrated video! Much appreciated!
