ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus vs Torqeedo Travel 903 - choosing outboard in 2024 and solar install

I have finally decided which electric outboard to buy - I explain which I chose and give my reasons why. Also showing in this video how I installed a charge controller on my Cornish Crabber 26 so I can charge my house batteries too. No room on deck for a large enough panel, so I'm going to use a folding solar panel.
Hand stitching leather to the wooden spar of a traditional yacht
zhlédnutí 924Před 2 měsíci
Wooden spars are prone to chafe, so I have wrapped part of the bowsprit of Molly of Mylor (A Cornish Crabber 26) in leather to protect the varnish when the spar is raised and secured in harbour. This is a low-cost and satisfying way to protect the wood from damage. The technique is easy, but there are a number of pitfalls which I demonstrate. Here are a couple of links to previous projects: mea...

Meandering Molly - strip down & service Flojet Quad valve R4105143 shower drain diaphragm pump
zhlédnutí 115Před 2 měsíci
Early season maintenance aboard our Cornish Crabber 26 gaff-rigged yacht. The pump which drains the shower tray in Molly's heads stopped working, so I removed the pump, stripped it down and installed replacement valve kit and piston/diaphragm kit. I couldn't find much on how to do this, so I thought I'd share my experiences.
Raising the mast on a Cornish Crabber 26 sailing yacht in strong wind using only its own rigging

Mast raising Our previous boat before Molly was a Cape Cutter 19 trailer sailer and raising her mast on a tabernacle was straightforward with two people, but this was always when she was on her trailer firmly on dry land. The mast on Molly is much heavier and in the first summer we owned her, I tried to raise the mast whilst she was afloat. You can see in this drone footage that it was not easy...
Timelapse of tractor and Roodberg trailer lifting sailing club yachts- Portsmouth Offshore Group POG

Our club has owned a Roodberg trailer for six years, using it to fill our yard with tightly packed boats for winter lay up. This is organised with military precision and executed by a large team of club volunteers. The yachts are moved into position in something which reminded me of a dance when seen in time lapse. This video is intended to be entertaining more than instructional, but I have in...

Meandering Molly - drone view of Cornish Crabber 26 sailing in Falmouth Bay
zhlédnutí 1,3KPřed 6 měsíci
I shot this sequence soon after we first launched Molly. It was quite nerve wracking catching the drone at the end of the flight, even though the winds were quite light. I'd love to do this with stronger wind, but even so Molly looks lovely with the sun out and all her sails set. I did not know what to do with this short sequence until I recorded my daughter improvising on her guitar and I thou...

Hi thanks for the video. Trying to repair same pump on a boat at the moment. Where did you get the pump service kit and what size alen key did you use to release pump head from motor shaft. 3mm seems too small and 4 too big. Did you use 1/8" ?
nice video, I'm curious how you finished it off at the very end. I know you did 3 thumb knots when you ran out of thread in the middle. I had watched another video that finished with a square knot but that proved ineffective for me.
Thanks for your comment. I made a double stitch through the end two holes and tied off the ends of the thread. I then drew the ends back along the seam before cutting, so that the knot is tucked away from chafe. Time will tell how durable the stitches will be- so far so good and the leather will need to be removed eventually for revarnishing
Ah sorry. You said 8m of chain.
Thank you. Do you know what anchor size and chain length you have? I have CC26/31. Would love to ask a few questions if possible?
Thats thorns high school is,nt it
That's right.
Hi. I enjoy watching your videos on Molly. What chain size do you have on Molly? Is it 6mm or 8mm? I think six is standard but is that sufficient?
I’m actually not sure on the chain size but I’ll look next time I’m aboard. The ground tackle feels adequate to me but that obviously depends on the conditions. I have 8m of chain and 30m of warp and it has served well so far
The chain is 8mm
Lovely video… that catamaran is a Wharram I believe.
Thank you
Great film but music too invasive.
Thanks for the feedback. The sound on my GoPro was poor, so I felt a soundtrack was needed.
more info on Daisy. does it have a channel on youtube any construction drawings
Hello, sorry I don’t have any further information on Daisy. I’ve seen her a few times on the Solent. I’ll ask the skipper next time I see him
Amazingly I ran into Daisy’s skipper tonight. Here’s a link: www.oga.org.uk/boat_register/boat/?oga_no=992

Content que tu l'aies apprécié. L'embouchure de la rivière avait le moins de profondeur. Une fois à l'intérieur, j'ai trouvé beaucoup d'eau.

This is rather fancy.
Before our club had this, we had to hire three cranes (and drivers) twice a year. This is safer and also allows us to have more than one lift/launch per year.
@@erbster200 So it's a worthwhile investment then. I imagine that the cost for using the cranes every year would be quite staggering too.

Lovely video Charles and your daughter's guitar sets the tone nicely.
Thanks!
thanks for sharing!
Glad you found it useful
Have the COLREGS changed? In days of yore we were required to display an inverted cone when motor sailing. Capt John
No the regs are the same. Mea culpa! However I can’t remember the last time I saw one used.
What a lovely restful video, Charles!
Thank you!
I am getting my catboat ready at the moment and can not wait to sail in the spring this video was superb. It is so nice to see young people enjoy these special memories and moments in life. Halcyon days.
Thank you. Fair winds for this season!
Ahhh there is a boat with dutch sailers.... wait the name of the boat is meisje ( girl) ... but britisch flag 😊. Love the upload, keep them posting
Meisje is a boat I know well. I think its name has now been changed though. Thanks for your kind comments
une très belle vidéo j'aime beaucoup cette région et j'espère y retourner fin avril et monter a Brightlingsea que je ne connais pas encore .
Merci beaucoup! Brightlingsea vaut bien une visite.
I’ve just acquired a South African built Cape Cutter 19 named Bandoola from Norfolk. I hope to be able to join in very soon… I’m bringing her home next weekend to do a dry run rigging her after which I shall be doing some shake downs at Rutland Water…. Great video of what looked to be a fun event… brilliant!
Sounds great. The ZA boats are lovely. Check for mast rot at the hounds (mast band). Rutland is an excellent place to shake down. The CC rally is on the Clyde this year. I would strongly recommend joining in - loads of help from friendly fellow owners, learn lots about the boat and cruise in company. Find the class association website or owners Facebook group

Dreadfully boring 😓
What a shame you by-passed Mersea; a lovely unspoilt harbour with a lively fishing community, a yacht club, sailing club and traditional smacks.

Fantastic shots, did you launch the drone from the boat? May I ask what drone you have been using, would like one but can’t way up if the budget ones are worth it. Kind regards Miles
Yes, I launched from the boat. That's the easy part - it's recovery that's hard!!! Can't say my heart wasn't in my mouth... I used a DJI Mini 2, which coped fairly well. I hand launch and catch routinely, which helps. This was the first time I flew from a moving boat and my wife caught the drone as I flew it back to the stern of the boat. I have not upgraded from the Mini 2 because of the risk of it going for a swim. It is well and truly superseded now, but well capable of this sort of thing. It can cope comfortably with winds up to about 12-15kt, you just need to practice and build up to it. If you are interested, then go for it! Try a second hand Mini 2 or 3 - they are relatively inexpensive now.
Thanks that’s was just the answer I was after, not sure I’d be able to get my wife out on the boat to do the catching though. I also have a gaff cutter but only 20ft similar to a Heard
@@mileswalton7413 start on land, hand catching. I then launched from my boat at anchor, using a line to hold the boom out to the shroud, so there’s lots of room in the cockpit (when I started I had a 19ft trailer sailer). When taking off, get high asap, when landing approach from downwind
I had no idea you and Nik had made this trip on JB. But had you forgotten that the WBSAC had chartered her for a private weekend back in .... ?1998? I should think.... what fun we had but no music except from the grand piano in the hold/saloon
Your daughter's guitar playing was the perfect touch!👍
Thank you
What'up! amazing editing. 🎥
Well, thank you very much!
It was fun wasn’t it! We look forward to sailing with you again, on your home waters this summer?
Terrible screeching guitar playing. Keep fingers clear of fretboard when changing chords PLEASE.
No-one is perfect. Please feel free to use the volume control
Thanks for these great shots! We enjoyed this cruise on Windbreker, so nice to look back with this video. Hope to sail with you this summer! Grts, Edgar & Else
Thank you. I hope so too!
Hi, and thanks for the video. How do you like the Crewsaver dinghy? Pondering that boat with a 2.5 hp Suzuki for a light weight setup. Thanks
Just to add, the tube diameter seems small compared to others, which could affect sitting comfortably high enough off the deck. Do you find that to be an issue?
Lovely to watch shame about the storm but all part of the enjoyment
Considering buying one, so it's really nice to see this video thank you!
I'm pleased with it. There was a small fault with the row-lock and the after sales was good - I was supplied with a replacement part very easily.
Far too much weather helm!!!! Capt John.
The tiller was heavy for sure! We should have had another jib out, I know, but this was just an hour or two up and down the Solent
Absolutely gorgeous bunch of gaffers on display. We don't have so many here on the Texas Gulf Coast but it's always a treat to see them. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the afterglow!!
What a delightful sailing week. Thanks for bringing me along. God bless.
Thank you!
Please tell your guitarist to keep his fingers clear of the strings when changing chords. The screeching spoils the melody.
It is a clipper tjalk not a thames barge
No idea who is Captain of the JB these days, but when I sailed her in the eighties under Mike and Lily, and later Pal, one didn't sit anywhere near the tiller sipping coffee or cocoa unless one was at the helm. Having helmed her through a gale from Brittany to the Isles of Scilly at night at the age of sixteen, tied to the bench with a couple of loops around the tiller, I'm a little concerned.
This was a group of gaffer sailors from the OGA. The skipper had two professional crew aboard - we just did as we were told and were lucky enough to take turns steering and climbing the rigging
A very interesting video because it replicates my cruising in my 24 Cornish Crabber in the early 1990’s. If you let me have your email I can send you pictures of some anchorages you have yet to visit, and the classic boat rallies in Plymouth, Fowey and Falmouth we were invited to join.

Looks relaxing compared to some videos I've seen. I would love a motor sailer .
Nice video Charles, we still miss her!
Thanks, Paul. We are so pleased with her. Sailing to France this weekend and then cruising round to Suffolk.
Forgot to say, where you entered the water is where loads of otters clamber in and out of the loch. There’s always loads of them and some are fairly bold and will hang around for a while and show off!
I’m from a wee village on the Skye side of Inverinate and I’ve always wondered what lurked under the water at Loch Duich. I just snorkel in and around Lochalsh, the south of Skye and Plockton so far…..I’m 45 and learned to swim in these waters as a kid. Thanks for sharing your video - gorgeous footage!
Glad you liked it. It's a special place! I've dived on the other shore of Loch Duich, near Letterfearn, but Inverinate is a favourite of mine.
