Sailing aboard historic pilot cutter Jolie Brise, three times Fastnet Race winner

On the weekend of the King's coronation, Cowes on the Isle of Wight was the party port for the OGA 60th anniversary and played host to the fleet circumnavigating the UK. As part of the activities, there was an opportunity to sail aboard Jolie Brise, a 73-foot, 110-year old gaff cutter. Although it was early May, we had suitably brisk condition to experience sailing aboard this impressive gaffer.

I had no idea you and Nik had made this trip on JB. But had you forgotten that the WBSAC had chartered her for a private weekend back in .... ?1998? I should think.... what fun we had but no music except from the grand piano in the hold/saloon

No idea who is Captain of the JB these days, but when I sailed her in the eighties under Mike and Lily, and later Pal, one didn't sit anywhere near the tiller sipping coffee or cocoa unless one was at the helm. Having helmed her through a gale from Brittany to the Isles of Scilly at night at the age of sixteen, tied to the bench with a couple of loops around the tiller, I'm a little concerned.

This was a group of gaffer sailors from the OGA. The skipper had two professional crew aboard - we just did as we were told and were lucky enough to take turns steering and climbing the rigging

Thanks for the feedback. The sound on my GoPro was poor, so I felt a soundtrack was needed.

The tiller was heavy for sure! We should have had another jib out, I know, but this was just an hour or two up and down the Solent
