    I disagree quite a lot with the problems he brings up about Avalon. namely the "optimal strategy" and "luck factor" of the assassin. My group plays this game every week multiple times and there is no optimal strategy because everyone becomes better at the game, and each player knows all the possibilities of the game and attempts to counter the strategies. Assassin can sometimes win based on pure luck, but as i said, my group is exceptional at this game, and anyone who is not merlin, (usually percival) will pretend to be merlin, sometimes so well that assassin kills him instead of the real merlin. The problems stated in this video are purely based on the people playing it. if everyone ends up being exceptional, the game becomes much more intense and much more fun instead of being more funneled.

    That ding is so piercing... it truly hurts my ears... can you find something not as high pitched or er... mute it or something? Or not mention One Night Werewolf again :) The discussion about Hearthstone's randomness and it's relation to tournament play... Pokemon TCG has a mass of cards that have "flip a coin x number of times and for each head do something or another" and every Special Status (Burned, Asleep, Confused and so on) also require coin flips to determine if the effect continues/triggers. And yet they have tournaments every year where the best of the best play... I agree that the random element makes it more accessible but I don't think it limits it's depth.

    You guys talked about Five Tribes. I haven't played it yet, but I can't get behind using slaves as a resource. I find it incredibly offensive and unacceptable in this day and age. And I certainly don't accept "it's thematic" as an excuse, especially in a game where the theme is tacked on as it is with Five Tribes. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @boardgameknights
      @boardgameknights Před 9 lety

      Interesting point, and I can see where you're coming from. I guess I don't really have a problem with it since it's coming from an abstracted view of slaves and the slave trade. And I think it's really hard to argue that just because slaves are in a board game, that it encourages slavery. I think we're all grown up to know it's just a game, and that hey it did actually happen in the past. I think hiding some of the worst parts of history is worse than just accepting that it happened. At any rate, it's a really good game, so your loss :P.

    • @AgentKuo
      @AgentKuo Před 9 lety

      Just because it's part of our history doesn't make it okay. I think if anything, it says yeah, slaves and silk and spice, they're just resources to be traded and sold, but it's okay cuz it's a game. To me it says that's where we are as a society in 2015, still trying to justify slavery.

    • @boardgameknights
      @boardgameknights Před 9 lety

      Carl Frodge I disagree that the game is justifying slavery, but I think that's just down to personal stance. It's always good to get a different view on these things, and it should definitely be something that game designers should be aware of when they make a game.

    • @AgentKuo
      @AgentKuo Před 9 lety

      It's the players who are trying to justify the use of slaves as a resource with arguments like "it's thematic" (which is never a good argument for a game with a pasted-on theme), "it's part of our history," and "it's just a game." None of these arguments make slavery okay in the context of a game or otherwise, none of them justify the use of slaves as a resource. So my question to these people is, why is using slaves as a resource so important to you, why are you trying to justify slavery?

    • @boardgameknights
      @boardgameknights Před 9 lety

      Carl Frodge Indeed, I feel like this is a bigger question that should probably be addressed in something more than a textbox in youtube. I'll add it to the list of potential topics to discuss in a future podcast.

    I know this is months old, but one rule you can add that most people forget to mention is that whoever is the leader can control which mission they're going to try and pass, allowing you to complete missions in any order, so that adds quite a bit to the game, I feel.

    No Avatar: The Last Airbender? Before the Fire Nation Invasion. It would make an awesome RPG. You pick an element to bend and be on spiritual journeys or visiting friends and there is the looming threat of the Fire Nation invading. In the World of Korra you could also have an RPG and pick not to have Bending and instead use newly-developed technologies. It could even make an Overlord game where you're trying to find Airbenders and each scenario would be different towns and mountainsides and villages where the Overlord is trying to hide their captives, capture you etc. The terrain could be manipulated; so it'd probably be hexes consisting of Earth and Water. I'm aware an RPG seems to already exist; though I haven't got to play it. I would imagine it'd be pretty awesome getting to create different offensive and defensive techniques based on your element.

    Great list and video first of all. I love the Cornetto Trilogy and I think a themed Fluxx game would work well to like the movies in a game. You could have goals to collect a matching pair of Simon and Nick from the same movies, or multiple of one from different movies. Creepers could be zombies, aliens and a fence. A good way to work with the theme is have some cards have additional or different effects if they affect or play of other cards from the same movie. A game I would like to see is a co-op Doctor Who game where each player is a different doctor, each with slightly different skills, trying to complete quests in different timelines. Another co-op game would be for Borderlands. Team up to find the vault, fight bosses and collect loot along the way. A unique mechanic would be that weapons are made out of three cards laid on top of one another, one that determine the weapon type, another what manufacturer made it and one is an attachment. All the cards have different stats and special effects that combine to make a weapon.

  • @WillGodar
    @WillGodar Před 10 lety

    I have to disagree with you on this one. First off, the ability to lose a game due to a weak link on your team is not a reason to give a game a poor rating. You wouldn't say Pandemic or Arkham Horror are bad games because you can lose if someone on your team is bad. And in a game about deception this is even less true. 1 strategy is for the spies to all try and win over 1 Resistance member and alienate the rest. Also, if you're going to rate a game poorly because it makes people upset, then just about every competitive game would be considered terrible. As for there being an optimal strategy, this really depends on how many people are playing and what group you're playing with. Yes, like any game, a group may settle into 1 strategy for victory but to say this all boils down to the first mission is ridiculous. Yes, in a 5 player game, the first mission is extremely important. In a 7 player game, it's all about the last mission. Monopoly isn't a bad game because 1 strategy for winning is immediately going for the railroads. And when you use the Event cards, strategy varies even more. I haven't played Avalon but judging by what I've seen the Merlin mechanic seems a little silly but for anyone watching this review I would encourage you to try out The Resistance. So long as you don't play with the same boring group every time it's a fantastic game.
