    INTENT -n- CO$Ts are the two mitigating factors in buying a bike and most people do not know what their intent is until after they've ridden for a while. The fact of the matter is, you can take whatever bike ya got & make it do the chore in front of you. I'm saving for a 1st bike since the 90's right now & so I've got a list of bikes, all are dual sports, and I've even got lists of all the mods I'd want to do to each of those bikes. Both the DRz & Honda 300L are on my lists. The Rally version of 300L and the 6th gear along w/ larger gas tank are just some of my reasons for liking it. Any bike from the Japanese builders I'd be trusting to last a long time. The DRz/DR650 are both great bikes, the carbs do not bother me at all & in a way the less computer crap on a bike, the better should there be a problem. BUT I'm here evaluating stuff so TY for the videos.

      Well, with a Channel Titled "ChasingTrail".... Umm, kinda descriptive but it makes no matter. A lot of channels do exactly what you have but mostly to create more content. "Intent to create Content" ! Yeah, that's what it is but it's alright since having a channel allows for you to actually discover yourself all the way across the gambit..... Nevertheless, you just got 2 of the 8-10 bikes I'm researching so it was a double whammy for me & you riding a longer time allows me me to ask all sorts of stuff & know I'm getting reasonable answers. Kudo's for that & I've still got 2-3 months before I'll be able to buy = more time to get to know all the bikes & what I can expect in Mods after the purchase. I've not met anyone who's looking post-purchase far enough to know what those mods cost. Anyhoo, ty for the vids, I'll be around. peace

    Exactly what makes the 300 better on the road than the 450? thanks

    • @chasingtrail
      @chasingtrail Před měsícem

      I made this video a while ago and don't remember what I said. The 300L gets better gas mileage, has a nice display, and vibrates less. I had the Rally version, which is a bit heavier, and having some extra weight provides stability on the road. The downside is the power, it definitely lacks passing power which the 450 has no problem with. The 450 has a terribly snatchy throttle, even with an aftermarket ECU, in my experience. The only place this really mattered was in slow, technical riding but, it really annoyed me. I sold the 300L Rally a while ago. I may get another at some point, but I would get the standard version and add the Acerbis 3.5 gallon tank. There were no aftermarket tank options when I got mine so I went with the Rally as I wanted the extra fuel range. Dual sports are the world of compromise. I've tried most of them, and I still struggle to be honest with myself about intended use. If I were to buy one today, I'd get a 300L. I've come to realize I'm a slow rider and the 300L does everything I need it to with Honda reliability. I'd spend some money on suspension and a seat. I did all the power mods on my 300L Rally and they weren't worth, imo. It's never going to have much power unless you get into serious engine mods and at that point you bought the wrong bike. Throw a slip-on if you want to save some weight and have a better sound. Just my 2 cents. Your mileage will likely vary.

    • @chasingtrail
      @chasingtrail Před měsícem

      @@localresident7826 And a Beta, and a DR650, and probably more I'm forgetting. I have a disease where I can't ever keep a motorcycle long, I want to ride all of them. I do think the overall package and price of the CRF300L makes it compelling, but it needs suspension work. The price difference between the 300L and KLX300 pretty much lets you account for that though, and there are so many more aftermarket options for the Honda.

    • @chasingtrail
      @chasingtrail Před měsícem

      Other than my first tank I never ran it low enough again to test that. I think you can expect 90 - 100 miles per tank in stock form. The bigger issue is the fuel pump location. I really don't care for the new design. It is not intended for dual sport use. Off-road, it's not really a problem, but if you're riding on smoother stuff that last 1/4 or so of the tank becomes useless.

    Your candid reactions are refreshing. Given how tired you, likely, were by 1 AM, I'll bet that the job wouldn't seem nearly as bad the next time, especially, if you started, say, on a weekend morning. What if you had to repair a tire out on the trail? If you'd done it a few times, I suspect that the experience would be a lot less stressful and tiring. I got a WR250F for the same reason: a lightweight, dual sport. Your riding (skills) seems just fine - perfectly suitable for enjoying the sights ... and getting home in one piece! Mine seems treacherous to get off it, too (despite a 35" inseam); so, I was reluctant to add saddlebags to get in the way. Fender and handlebar bags get tools off my back.

    • @chasingtrail
      @chasingtrail Před 3 měsíci

      The CRF300L is an entry level, budget dual sport. The power feels like a scooter. It's a good bike for a beginner, or someone who just wants something basic and reliable that won't break the bank. The KTM is a full blown dirt bike that is street legal. I like the European dual sports for one main reason, and that is weight. The lighter the bike, the better off-road, imo. For my limited skill level, the CRF300L would be enough in all honesty. I got the KTM because I can, and because of the light weight. Picking up the CRF300L Rally even a couple times, wore me out fast. In my experience, you don't typically drop a bike in a convenient location. You drop it on a hill, off-camber, where you don't have a lot of traction for your boots or good leverage to lift it. In those situations, having a light bike is really beneficial, especially if you are riding solo.

I don’t think I am looking to do much if any technical stuff, but would like to have an easy light bike to take on gravel roads, logging trails and enjoy some pavement as well. So hard to make a decision without being able to do a test ride!

      @@freebehindbars8654 That's fair, and it's all good lol. I've done a lot of "builds" now and I'm actually trying to get away from that and trying to get a bike that is as close to what I want from the factory with minimal modifications desired. I've broken even on a couple of the bikes I modded out but generally speaking I lose a lot of money on all those accessories and I go through a lot bikes. The problem is I have a lot of fun doing it. Expensive hobby I guess.

      @@chasingtrail Definitely gets expensive. But nothing like having a bike setup perfectly for your needs. After bars, exhaust, cleaner, the cam is the next and most impactful thing I do. These motors really wake up pushing more air.

      @chasingtrail Před 4 měsíci

      I don't remember exactly. I pulled the carb apart a couple times and got it running well enough to sell it. The guy that bought it ended up having our local dealer go through the bike to check everything out. I don't know if they changed anything or not. Last I talked to him he was happy with the bike.

      I went through a local 3rd party registration service. I was in and out in about 5 minutes. The people at DMV don't know wtf they are doing. A friend of mine worked there for a few months recently and also confirmed this.

    Picked up an 05 Custom a few months back also have a 2021 Road King standard enjoy them both. Everyone seems to believe if your over 6' and or over 250 lbs the Sportster is too small just a entry level Harley (buzzer sound) I find this bike to check all the boxes plus a absolute joy to ride as much as my RK. I swapped rider seat to a Mustang solo and bars to a standard set of touring bars i had with Burly kit which made all the difference in cornering. 64 yrs 6'1- 260 having a blast! So firstly, any FI bike like this will do exactly that and die when you crack the throttle like that at idle. I can 100% guarantee your Beta bike will also do this. So this doesn't signify anything. Secondly, these bikes have a blink code mil light system which will indicate what the issue is at the time. So why didn't you assess this when it was happening?
