    1:39 before putting those screws in, use grease on them. And when you're in a sh!tuation like that, use a bit of rubber strip (bicycle tire tube) between the screw driver and the screw.

    0:10 insert Peter from family guy when he hurts his knee sound. were it me, i would get a slightly thicker plank out of a bendy wood and i would lash that down to the beams with rope (tightly) with a layer of foam between them. Then i'd screw the deck planks directly to that piece of wood, not through the planks, but rather between them with a baton as the holder. That way, the planks remain without holes in them and thus, will last longer. 10:26 the reason you want the chain plates to be near or on the bulkhead is because the forces are then spread through that component. You place that anywhere else and you end up ripping the side of the boat, has happened to a few. Pics online with decaped boats.

    1:58 old adage: "if it looks straight, it's probably straight". You can also help yourself with a little trick. Find a mirror. put it perpendicular to the hull and when you sight through the mirror, you'll see the straightness of the line even better.

  • @aserta

    1:43 the price would've been hefty, but, because it lasts forever, it would've been slightly better to use stainless steel materials, like a stainless steel strap (for the beam part) and braided wire for the part where it sits, tying down with a couple of eyebolts. Jm2c, whenever i see stuff like this, all i can think of is "that's something you'll have to replace again one day, paying all that money once more" and i feel that one should always strive to "cry once" when it comes to stuff like structure.

    15:30 brass brush, turn on the sander and have at it, the clogging will fall off and you can resume sanding. If you do this every few swings, you won't get clogging anymore. Also, light pressure when you start seeing it's cloggy. The clogging happens because the vacuum doesn't have the time to suck it all in and you end up with clumps because of it. Sanding mesh is actually the best option for stuff like this.

    8:24 cif works, but it's an even easier job to just get a sanding sponge with a fine grit. Stainless steel pots, pans, sinks, a sanding sponge's your best friend, because it also helps you refinish the face. Obviously, you want a fine one, not something to grit the heck out of your pans, and the more worn in it gets, the better.

  • @aserta

    Were it me, i would've cut the top part of that evacuation hole and enlarged it. There's absolutely no point in having a hole that small that gets clogged up and then you get standing water. In the first place... i don't get why the step has that edge to gather water. Kind of a mistake in design.

    Piece of advice about plugging holes. You don't want to put plugs (cylinders) you want to put in truncated cones in (negative) truncated cone holes. Idea is, you're no relying on the epoxy to hold the plug in, you're actually putting the plywood to work (which is in reverse for the rest of the hull, most of the strength comes from the glass). Idea is, if you ever, by bad luck, strike a plug, which is a non-zero chance, you won't have to worry about it cracking. I know some people think it's ok, but i strongly believe that those kinds of holes (and in general any repair under the water line) should be done with beveled edges. It's more work for sure, but nothing a good chamfer bit can't do in a jiffy. jm2c

    Next time use dish soap for lube to install the impeller Instead of grease . Grease will deteriorate the rubber while dish soap will dissipate .

  • @aserta
    @aserta Před 4 hodinami

    Would've done the windows differently. If you're adverse to drilling holes and putting epoxy plugs to then put the screws through that, you can always just drill holes in the plexy, mount plexy blocks that reach inside the boat, glued in of course, and then put another layer on the other side done in the same fashion, thus making a sandwich that doesn't rely on VHB to hold on. Also, your paint technique needs work. You're putting on very thick coats that don't work. This isn't a spraygun paint, this is a rattle can. You put on light coats, let them flash, put on more.

  • @aserta

    1:59 gunsmith's screw driver (in some circles). Very good because the screwdriver doesn't slip in the screw like the common ones do.

  • @aserta
    @aserta Před 4 hodinami

    It's pretty clear to me that the person who had this after the builder made it was the cheapest of cheapskates and also, inexperienced and too lazy to put in the good work. No offence, but the through hole, the polystyrene and several other signs coupled with the state this poor boat was in... just lousy ownership.

  • @aserta
    @aserta Před 5 hodinami

    5:31 never salvage modern ball valves. Don't bother. Only the top most quality stuff (and you know when you see it, because it still works and it's heavy as) is worth the effort. That's a common garden variety ball valve. The through fittings are a bit of a shame, because they looked decent, i would've tried a bit more to get them off (maybe with some heat - advice, never recover a heated ball valve, because there's plastic inside, teflon, but still plastic and it does perish, which is one reason you don't bother with them) and used them in a descending order or sold them off (the good ones). Descending order is you have a bigger hole, you enlarge the next smallest and fit that bigger through hole thru it. Idea being you're working with fresh material. The actual brass seemed to be quality (on the grind view), so they would've worked. Ah well, no use crying over spilt milk, just remember to never bother with old (and in some cases - new) ball valves. Not worth the safety aspect of it.

    1:58 protip so you don't blow through your ply: drill the pilot, then score the hole cutter on both sides, before going away at it, that way, you won't be pulling the veneer with you when you pierce. :)

  • @aserta
    @aserta Před 6 hodinami

    20:33 one thing i would've added (at this stage) to the deck, would've been a linoleum sheet over it. Like the thicker type you use for hospital floors (they're a "hard traffic" type). Whenever you'd have work to do, you'd roll it on, and you could work without fear of stuff falling over AND because the linoleum is on top, it would've made a slightly better distribution of your weight on the boards. Would help you from going through if you jumped on one leg, but it would save your leg if you did. :) Source: i use two sheets of the stuff on top of wooden scaffolding. It makes cleaning and other affairs much easier.

    Wood to wood joints should be glued with epoxy thickened with cotton fibers. Instead of attempting to use clamps on awkward surfaces, screw it together temporarily with drywall screws. Drill and install the screws before gluing, accurately aligning your pieces, then unscrew, prewet, apply thickened epoxy, and reinstall the screws. This will give you accurate control of your glue line, prevent the pieces from sliding, and yield a better and more consistent result. Remember, you think epoxy is a glue, but until it goes exotherm, its a lubricant.
