I’ve owned Behringer gear over the years and every single piece of equipment I’ve ever owned worked perfectly never had any problems, mixing boards, speakers, compressors, digital delay units, and now synthesizers. There’s lots of affordable synthesizers on the market but Beringer always gets a bad wrap. Watch my video on expensive synthesizers.

Very insightful video, thank you for sharing your thoughts. When I saw the 'cork sniffer' thing and how people were saying behringer was being anti-semetic, it seemed like kind of a stretch, I thought maybe I was missing context, like Kirn being Jewish or something. It was helpful to hear your analysis of how anti-semetism affects culture, so people end up using anti-semetic signifiers as pejoratives without realizing it. It's still shitty what they did, it just doesn't have the same level of intentionality.

Very fascinating! When I heard the first turbulent recording, the low frequencies sounded like the overall large scale pattern of waves on the lake, and the clicks sounded like the chaotic bumps it’s gets from the surface waves. I think it’s exciting that the clicks were quieter on a calmer day. Would be really fascinated to see the spectrum and a Fourier transform of it. I think this isn’t too far from something really interesting and maybe publishable! I think there’s a formula out there somewhere that relates wavelength to things like wind speed and the size of the body of water…

I'll be honest... i don't really care what other people say about brands for the most part. People looooove Teenage Engineering. But I personally can't justify their price, and they feel like hipster toys (no offence). Behringer... they've done nothing wrong to me. They help introduce lower-budget potential musicians into the niche, who almost inevitably go on to spend more on other brands too (how many musicians SOLELY use Behringer products?) I think we should look at each brand/product based on their merits, and quit the fart-sniffing elitist views that many seem to fall into the trap of. Not everyone can afford a Moog... and those who start with a Behringer are a lot more likely to upgrade to a Moog eventually, versus someone who was priced out of the market right from the start

hello! I went the other way. Before recording an album, I play my music at live performances. The question of a pause between changing settings is very problematic if you are performing on a large club stage, and the DJ is playing before and after you. There is no way to communicate with the public in order to gain time for revision. The solution was found in the form of a rhythmic ambient with text and a Roland sx404. On which the necessary musical material has been recorded in advance. Of course, it had to be composed on purpose. And the club trend is that a musician playing live on hardware is more popular with the public than a DJ on a flash drive. That's because everyone can become a flash DJ, and a musician playing live is an exclusive and costs much more. I wish you good luck!

For the table space problem... Back when I still played I had custom-built cases that you can put on tables(with the top lifting off and the front folding away), that also had appropriate hardware to take a stand under them in case you don't get the luxury of table space. I didn't make those myself, but I did have a good friend who just happened to be working with wood and undestood my needs after a bit of brainstorming. Custom cases deffo have benefits(apart from looking suuuper sweet), like allowing you to fix your gear in place while minimize wiring requirements when changing between venues and practice. Plus everything stays in the same place and you have to think less when playing. For switching between songs without dead air... For me personally that was always part of the challenge to play live - come up with an order for your pieces where you can actually just slowly blend between on songs' settings to the next. As in, try to play it as a set/one very long piece with parts, not as discrete songs. And even if you want to do some crowd work - for me personally that always worked better over a running arp or some basic soundscapes.

Cool video. This might not work for your current needs, but I've started working on a "suitcase set" that'll make it easier for me to travel with my gear. Basically, I got an old piece of Samsonite luggage, and I'm modifying it to fit everything I need to play a live set. The goal is to be able to show up, open the case, plug into a single power source and mixer, and be ready to play a show. It looks like a lot of your gear is on the larger side, but you might be able to figure out something similar to help streamline the setup and breakdown process.

The actual big players in the synth world have not innovated in decades. The entire analog resurgence is nostalgia marketing, to which musicians are susceptible bc sitting in front of a computer is depressing. Innovation comes from startups and the big players copy those innovations. About changing patches between songs, maybe you can mix songs - change patches one by one and let some void filling melody transform from one song to another. FIRST you change k20 and ms20 while brute still playing some drone or sth and then ms 20 starts with some looped melody waiting for brute, next song can start from that loop or drone. Best of luck!

For my electronic duo, Last Dance, we have two primary "stations" for live performance. Station 1 uses a classroom mobile desk (Luxor STAND-WS30 Three-Shelf Adjustable Stand Up Workstation). This desk allows for a clever "under the hood" organization for hardware that does not require immediate access during song performance. There is a pull out keyboard tray that can be used to keep, for ex a laptop, to be used only when necessary. Our laptop is used for samples, tracks, and instruments from ableton and remains closed the entire performance (controlled with Push 2). There are two additional shelves under the tabletop and keyboard drawer. For our purposes they are used to keep a power strip and an audio interface (we route all inputs into daw for fx processing then to FOH) on the middle shelf and the bottom shelf for a small speaker for projecting as a stage monitor or towards an audience if needed. Everything under the tabletop is concealed to the audience with black foil fringe doorway curtains that warp around the sides and front of the tabletop and cut to length down to the floor. The wheels can be locked if needed and is very easy to set up and then roll wherever it needs to go. I understand your routing is more complex but I'd be happy to share pics and other bits of info if helpful! Let me know the best way to get in touch!

Back in the day, when I started dabbling with music, there were a few "experimental" genres, like IDM and Breakcore, which were more of a throw-away labels that were so loose in their meaning, that the general consensus was that they represented almost anything, though had some stylistic characteristics that brought a lot of stuff that was made under one roof. For example, "breakcore" was distinguishing itself as a form of a punky dance music, which was loosely relying on sampling, wild breakbeats and "hardcore" (often loud and distorted) sounds. Interestingly enough, lots of people were concerned that the experimental nature of these "genres" might become lost in time due to people overcategorizing and iteratively copying ideas. It kind of happened, though. Most of the "breakcore" that I found in the last few years sounds like something I would rather call "turbojungle", than keeping the labels to myself and just let the the vast variety of music I discovered just suck in. EDIT: And yes, I am aware that if I kept digging, I would have found more interesting and diversified stuff. :))

Genre is being substituted by “mood”. We are emotional beings and with the constant fusion of different genres and creation of endless new sub-genres, kind of makes it easy to search for a specific “mood” playlist, instead of a genre. Not that genres will disappear, but they could ironically become THE sub-genre, when searching for music online 🥸

Ulli Behringer styles himself the Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos of the synth community. He took the authoritarian technocrat mentality of Silicon Valley and applied it to making music gear. This is also apparent in the voracious acquisition of niche companies to create a Walmart of music production gear. Like the aforementioned techbros, he displays megalomanic and sociopathic tendencies, possibly even narcissistic given how viciously he has to punch down - using the megaphone of his corporate voice - on any even moderately known personality who criticizes Behringer. Normal people don't do that shit. It's interesting how passionately his defenders defend him. Evangelist is usually a paid job title in a marketing department, and yet Behringer has managed to turn a significant slice of their customer base into unpaid evangelists. That's quite a coup. I get that some synth nerds feel a need to defend Behringer when they perceive it as the only way they can acquire a stack of hardware. I don't entirely understand it. It's like having hardware has become a weird status symbol or something, and the more you have of it, the greater this "status". It seems to have very little to do with what that hardware is supposedly for: self-expression and creativity through sound. There are plenty of options, new and used, for people to accumulate gear and maybe even make music, without supporting by far the biggest bully in the space. A healthier community would exile his ass pronto.

Great and thoughtful video. Behringer still needs to be called out about this. Churlish and juvenile behavior for a major manufacturer that does great stuff when they aren't sinking to unnecessarily low levels. But I'm not sure I agree with your charitable supposition that Behringer's anti semitic undertone was accidental. I did a quick google search for "anti semitic imagery" and the first link listed had an example of a caricature that was strikingly - eerily - *extremely* similar to the cork sniffer caricature. The grin, the hairline, the facial hair, the exact angle looking at the face. I won't post the link here because the page in question heavily references issues around the current Israel/Palestine conflict which I think is a complex situation and too polarizing for a synth page. But if you do the search I did you'll find the image easily. I understand Peter Kirn isn't jewish, but whomever did the art for cork sniffer created this image as a derogatory depiction, and it is very odd that such a specific similarity came out of that person's mind. Who would even agree to produce that awful piece of media? Maybe Uli did it himself. I sure wouldn't obey direction to do something like that. Again, great video. Sounds like you know a lot about the subject.

A few years ago I would have felt differently but I’m seeing the big name brands starting to put their support and quality control on pause, while still trying to charge customers a premium for their name brand. The trend is a lot about being bought and exploited by private equity. This has a bait and switch effect on their loyal customers. I see Behringer as a brand that’s gaining steam in value because they are an alternative to this horrible situation that the big names are going through. I don’t think Behringer is a great brand, it’s just gaining appeal because everyone else is becoming 💩. I have a few Behringer products that work really well and I appreciate the value. I don’t love Behringer but I’m not going to 💩 on them. Their stuff does the job and the quality is on par with anything else. They’re useful to have around.

Re-creating a minimoog in digital form, from analogue form, does require R&D. Just not at the level of Bob Moog, who pioneered the development of analogue synths. Moog became very successful until the rest of the world caught up. Behringer has a engineering team with the digital & analogue toolkits which they are applying to quickly re-create these vintage synths. If you have the toolkits and a massive production facilities, you must continually innovate to make use of that production capacity. When Behringer stops issuing new synths, be they vintage clones, kinda new, or totally new, they will certainly reach their end of life. It's all part of the never ending business cycle. On the Anti-Semitism side. The Kern graphic is it. Anyone remotely associated with life, let alone marketing should know better. Decrying that depiction as a "mistake" is a mistake. Someone did that. A company's culture allowed that to happen. Would I ever put any caricature of a brown skinned man with suggestive features, expression, or dress on my product. You'd be nuts to do so. To actually target an individual, Peter Kirn, a person, and a tiny competitor? Don't get me started. People are individuals, who like to group together. Individuals make mistakes, as do groups. Society can usually correct an individuals behaviour. It's much harder to correct the group. Behringer appears to have such a group... who are behaving badly. The Peter Kirn and Loopop incidents are disappointing. However, I'm now much more aware. Thanks for the video.
