CHR Tower Speakers Part 3 | DIY | Markaudio + SB Acoustics | New Crossover | Confronting Zu-Audio
CHR TOWER PART 3
In this video I report the Crossover build, test, measurements for the CHR Towers. After that I compare the CHR Tower speakers to Zu-Audio's Dirty Weekend.
The CHR Towers are a fantastic pair of powerful audio, low bass, high quality speakers. Made in Walnut Hardwood mixed with Euro-Ply and veneer, this design relies on the Markaudio CHR-90 Full-range and the SB Acoustics SB15MFC30-8 Woofer. This is a two way speaker box that impresses by its power, SPL and High Fidelity performance, even using 5" woofer drivers and full-ranges.

Hey brother, l just stumbled across this channel and am really enjoying it! I've been building speakers on and off since the early 2000's and am ready for my next project. I learned my way into DIY via the guidance of guys like Paul Carmody and Jeff Bagby. I played with full range speakers early on and was just so disappointed with the outcome. I would always have major spikes anywhere between 800Hz to 3KHz that just couldn't be tamed regardless of how much filter you threw at it. It looks like technology has come a long way. If you're ready to share plans I'd love to make this my next project. I look forward to hearing from you! I'll do you proud!
Hi Bernardo, any way you could show a pic of the actual crossover. First try for me and I'd like to see what it's supposed to look like. Thanks!
You need to test the Heco Aurora 300 dudes its nice, b.t.w nice build bbut d man...
🥰
Tengo una pregunta. Come se dice "all right guys" en español?
Come for the build, stay for the awesome music!
I love this speaker and I want to build this diy Do you have this speaker plans and crossover network ? I want to buy a plans I really want to make this!!

If anyone is interested in the Artist and track listing you played through your speakers at the end of your video. I used Shazaam as I enjoy Latin Jazz, Salsa, besides other genres. The track is: 'Bugalu Arrastrandose by John Runefelt
I really liked the project and his skill with wood. I would like to do it but as two separate speakers without the amplifier. What do you think?
Sand It... Sand It.... Lovely...
Right!!! Hehe
You are a great guy.... Thank you for this video.....
Thank you for watching!!
Good Job :)
Thanks 😁
Very nice work! Thanks for all the effort making this video. What enclosure calculator did you use?
Thanks for watching Dave. I’ve been using WinISD.
Hey Ren, Wheres Stimpy?
Sweet video as always. The only criticism I have is the driver choice. RS woofers are very accurate and well behaved, but I have never heard a Dayton tweeter and liked it. I think there is something wrong with them, especially the big ones. They have that one waveguided cheapo tweeter that somehow works in budget builds, but the 28mm series sounds so dirty and unnatural to my ear, I'm surprised people keep using them. Today there are so many choices - Hivi, Melodavid, SBA, ScanSpeak, Seas, Wavecor, Peerless... So many sweet budget tweeters to try like the SB26STAC. I know the prices vary around the globe but one may get an impression from watching youtube, that Dayton has a monopole, which in my experience is not true. There are some budget gems out there. Vifa D25AG in a Visaton 148 R waveguide is one hell of a combination. Wavecor tweeters can also be nice. They have separate chambers for their suspension just like hiend tweeters from Kartesian and Scan Speak. The price difference on these hifi tweeters is not too big I think, but the improvement is audible and easy to justify. They're not as cheap as Dayton, but bang for buck is subjective. You can easily stick to cheap RS woofers in your designs and just improve on the result from 2k up, or lower if you pick a waveguided design like SB26STWGC, Scan-Speak H2606 or the $15-20 equivalents from Peerless :) There are so many good drivers out there, it's a shame people stick to the most mediocre ones... out of fear maybe? And with slightly bigger budget than that you can have the cheapes hi-end tweeter - D2608. Melodavid is a bit more risky because of build quality concerns, but their 25 and 28mm drivers are cheap as chips and available world-wide. If you ever decide to venture even deeper into European market, try things like Seas L16rnx. People are scared of Seas' graphs but their woofers sound fantastic. They have very tight bass and are a lot of fun. They work best with a notch filter, but a single filter, if done precisely enough, makes them sound like an expensive paper woofer. I also noticed you used a plastic SB driver. It's a good driver, but make sure to try their regular NRX2 drivers - they're a great bang for buck. Their aluminium drivers work well for midrange duty too, but are limited by excursion. The problem with the plastic ones is the breakup, which is difficult to tame and it gives them a little brighter timbre than other drivers. They're mostly good for their bass I think. SB made a subwoofer driver based on them and I think that's a nice driver to test too.
Thanks for a great video , one thing other you tubers should DO IS cut the audio while they expain what they are doing like you have , great sense of humour also makes it fun to watch, I think I will have a go at a piggy back version to my three way (originally a tape selector )box as not enough room in my amp , Nice workshop you have and love the speakers.
Great idea, but are you not worried about the case of the transformer melting?
Hey there thanks for watching. It doesn’t get that hot but, it could have been a concern. 😕
halo sir, can u share scheme box on the picture? thanks
@22:52 Does anyone know the name of that rectangular slide ruler or where I can purchase one??? I currently make all my rectangular cutouts out of scrap material and that thing would save on a lot of additional labor. Thanks in advance.
I’ve posted a link to a Right angle ruler on Amazon. Let me know if that’s the one you are looking for.
@@sonnoradesign There was a ruler guide that you used to make a cut out for the speaker terminal cup at the timestamp in my last comment. Do you happen to know where I can find that ruler or what it is called? I appreciate your help and I love the project btw.
Nice looking speakers but for me they are not hifi speakers…no real twitters …no real woofers you say they play down 35 HZ can’t understand even the klipsh La Scala that they have 15 in woofers don’t go so low … for me it look more like beginner speakers … sorry
... Aiaiai caramba! Minas Gerais - Brazil
Hahaha. Fala Tadeu!! Obrigado
Hi again, one more question on this video, did you connect the woofers in serie o parallel on the cross over? Thanks
Hmm I don’t remember but I did maintained the original connection for sure. I’d say series?!

The biggest question is: are you Brazilian or Mexican?
Hahah. Brazilian!!

Tutta questa fatica per fare un diffusore con il peggiore materiale, il legno !
Hi, was wondering where R-1 is on the xover diagram. Thanks
Hi William. R1 is right after the crossover, for the tweeter.
Hi Bernardo, thanks a lot for all information, I’m new in this hobby and always I love to build things by myself, with help of this kind of quality of content, I was looking the other videos for CHR building but looks like the speakers are little expensive than this Dayton. Could you help me with the model and reference of this speakers? I’m in Colombia South America and the idea is build a project like this Dayton o better, but not much expensive for me like the CHR.
Hey Jaibert! Yes my friend I can suggest some equipment, where are you purchasing the drivers? Parts Express or eBay, Ali express?
From Argentina!!! I just made the same speakers following your indications. Sounds great even using a very cheap Sanyo speakers!!!
That’s good to hear my friend! Thanks for watching!!!
Let me understand, because my poor English, but does it means no need high frequency speaker (twitter), some videos use three kind of speakers: two for subwoofer, one mid, one high
En esto caso el parlante dorado es un full range, el toca frecuencia baja e alta al mismo tiempo.
Great video
Thanks for the visit
Great stuff I’ve watched several other videos without actually grasping the concepts. This is the best explanation I’ve seen so far please keep making videos.
Thanks again Tony. I’ll keep it going.
I hadn't understood the point you were making, in this video. It has felt like a random collection of ideas rather than sometimes I could use in order to make an informed decision about buying those speakers
Good job! Beautiful boxes! 😍
Valeu Flávio!!! Thanks for watching.
These drivers are no longer available.
Ouch. I know they might be on Ali Express? Let me see
Very clear sounds like some Harmon Karden or Polk audio
Thanks Robert!!!
I love your channel. I need to read up on that software. That’s pretty cool. I grew up in the 80s and yeah, we had Loud cars we always bought a cross overboard
Hahah. Right!!! Too many subwoofers! Never enough
Hey bro have you ever used RIT dye it will change the color and keep grain like a guitar
Nope never. Getta try that.
😂😂😂😂 sandpaper
Haha right?!
can you mix 8 and 4 ohm speakers? My home stereo is rated at 8 ohms
Hello. Yes you can but I suggest you go through a computer software to measure the results before trying it all. Impedance might drop too low and you can blow your amplifier. Caution!!!⚠️
i cant find the hifi audio design websight
Hello, I was thinking about building the ice amp and wanted to know how you like the sound of the ice, thanks
Hello Mike. I really like those amps. Matched with a tube pre amp sounds great. Very powerful and clean, sensible too, so easy to blow the board. Remember to have them plugged to the speakers before powering it up. Lot of manufacturers use them so it pretty much sounds like a bang olufsen or a peach tree…
@@sonnoradesign I know that a lot of companies use them and they are a lot of power for not to much money and I thought it would be a fun project, thanks and I hope you are doing good,
@@BostonMike68 thanks My friend! It’s a good deal for sure! All good here, hope you are well!
@@sonnoradesign thanks man I am doing good! I got a new job and a new girl. I'm building her a nice portable Bluetooth with the tang band subwoofer and a couple of 4 " full range Dayton reference mids out of oak. But I want to build the ice amp next!! Thanks my man
