Hearing Aid Accessories- the Basics
Dr. Egan explains several different examples of hearing aid accessories.
Transcription:
Hi, I'm Doctor Egan from Now Hear This and today I'm going to talk to you about some different accessory devices that you can use with your different kinds of hearing aids.
So a lot of folks ask about accessory devices in our clinic. Usually it's people who've gotten hearing aids elsewhere and of maybe moved to the area or have seen them through friends or family, things like that. And what I always say first is let's first just get your hearing aids programmed up to date, working their best because oftentimes hearing aids that are appropriately programmed using real ear measurement are all that you need. They get you where you need to go in regards to hearing as close to possible to normal hearing, again, in regards to hearing the TV, hearing in restaurants, things like that. So I always say let's start there and keep things simple.
That being said, sometimes depending on your the severity of your hearing loss and you know how bad it is, folks still need an accessory device. I like to think of it as there's hearing loss and there's, you know, hearing as close to normal hearing as possible and we have to figure out how to bridge that connection. Usually hearing aids are enough, but again, depending on the severity of the loss, there are other strategies, resources, accessories that can come into play.
And so we're going to talk about some of those accessory devices.
Now, all major hearing aid manufacturers have similar equivalents to what I'm about to show you.
So for example, here is a accessory, this is a remote control. And so it has a plus and a minus and a program change. And this can be really handy for folks who are more sensitive in certain environments, need to turn the volume down, or in certain environments like board meetings or things need to turn the sound up. They're also really great for folks who either don't have a smartphone, don't have a compatible smartphone with their particular style of hearing aid, or just prefer to not use their smartphone to make adjustments to their hearing aids.
They'd rather have this clicker type device in their pocket and that's perfectly fine.
And so it will vary in exactly how it looks, but they're all pretty small and they have these buttons.
Think of it like your TV remote control, but for your hearing aids.
Speaking of TV, all the different major manufacturers also have a TV streamer accessory.
And so basically how this works is it is plugged into the TV, it comes with a bunch of different cords so that whatever TV type you have, it can be compatible. And once it's installed, it will stream the TV's audio signal directly to both of your hearing aids for a much more clear sound quality.
And this works really well for a variety of people who struggle to hear the TVA lot of my patients who really like it like to watch the TV and their spouse doesn't want to hear everything.
So think you know, they're blasting the hockey game that night and their spouse is walking through the room and doesn't want to deal with it? Well, if they turn the volume down, they can't hear the commentators as well. But if they stream via a Bluetooth TV streamer, that sound quality goes directly to both of their ears. Both spouses are happy. So that's another really good creative solution for people who struggle to hear the TV.
Another accessory that I really like is a partner microphone, and again, they vary in what they look like, but they're all fairly small like this. They all have a little clip to clip to your top or come with a lanyard, and they have a wide variety of features. One is that they can be used to directly connect the Bluetooth of your hearing aids with a computer. So most hearing aids are compatible with smartphones, but not all of them are compatible with other devices like laptops, desktops, things like that. And this device would make them compatible. So a lot of folks who are still working or do a lot of Zoom calls really like using this feature. Another thing the partner microphone can do is in the name partner microphone. It can be used when clipped to someone else to directly take their voice to the microphone stream across the room directly to your ears, and that is incredibly effective in a really noisy restaurant or at a distance. I once had a patient say I was working on the plumbing underneath the sink and I couldn't hear my wife read to me the instructions, but when she had this clip to her everything was fine. So not facing people, background noise, things like that. They also usually come with volume controls, so you can think of it in a sense as having a little bit of a remote built in too, which is a nice feature.

I've had Starkey IIC's for many years, and I was just about to get the Genesis IIC when it came out last year but noticed that, for the highest amplification matrix (which is what I'm getting into now), the Genesis had a steeper dropoff in the 6K and higher frequencies than the previous Evolve series did (for the IIC). So I was excited when I heard about the new Signature series, but comparing the martices of the Genesis and Signature IICs they seem identical. At the same time, the "fitting range" for the Signature shows as being better than it is for the Genesis. How could they have the same output but have different fitting ranges? For me, Starkey's IICs have been great but again, how could a HA with 6 times the number of transistors (Genesis) have lower output than its predecessor? The battery life values are the same, so it can't be that. Also, FWIW, I just noticed that Starkey seems to have removed the detailed technical data sheet for the Evolve series. Maybe I better get a pair before they discontinue them altogether! Anyway, if you could shed any light on any of this, I'd be interested to know. Thanks...

I am currently using Starkey Evolv AI, and the main defects are two, the first concerns the bluetooth connection outdoors with the iPhone, a not very stable connection, the second defect is the switching from one audio source to another, most Sometimes a conflict arises that requires a reboot. My question is whether these defects have been corrected.

Hi, I'm also a starkey evolv user; and found it annoying at the beginning, switching from listening to music (audio) on eg. tablet, and then switching to cellphone for same music on the same app. After some discussion with colleagues, my audiologist suggested to not use more than 1 device on bluetooth at a time; so I used to make sure that bluetooth is on only on the device I'm using for audio (eg. when out, usually use the iphone, so shut off the bluetooth for ipad; and vice-versa). Hope this works on yours too! :)

    • @riccardofermi6265
      @riccardofermi6265 Před 2 měsíci

Yes, if you use only one device things improve, but it is a shame not to include an option on the app that can switch from one device to another without having to deactivate Bluetooth on the other devices. I currently disconnected the Mac from the Evolv because it was giving me too many problems, so to be able to hear the audio from the Mac I use the same device that I use for the TV.@@learningavocado162

I just found this video and thank you for doing a great job describing the Starkey Genesis AI. For the last several years, I’ve had resound hearing aids and like clockwork every couple of months one or the other would go out and I would have to send it off for repairs. I know others who have the same brand and swears by them so I have a feeling it’s probably moisture in my ears. hopefully the “waterproof“ of these hearing aids will make this a memory. FYI, that was even with wearing my resounds and putting them in a dehumidifier.

These days a person is literally called a “snowflake” if they’re deemed overly sensitive or whiny. “No two snowflakes are alike” almost sounded as if you’re referring to snowflake-patients. This is good advice. But your mouth and your voice are not synced when I wear top line hearing aids. There is a noticeable delay. These cost almost $5,000. I could buy 5 iPhones for $5,000. AirPod pros on the other hand cost $250. And your mouth and your voice are in sync, no noticeable delay. Hearing aid technology seems to be clunky and sound CHEAP. Why are they so expensive? Really unimpressed with top of line hearing aids.

My only complaints have been those clear tubes from mold to aid get kinked, brittle and block the sound easily as also the ear molds can trap ear wax to quickly, the smaller the ports the easier to get wax stuck and then your back to being deaf again! I have Phonaks and they have worked very well but you got to put up with the daily maintenance on any aid to keep it functional
