  • Dr. Egan explains her background and why she enjoys working at Now Hear This!
    Transcription:
Hi, I’m Dr. Egan. I’m one of the audiologists at Now Hear This and today I’m going to tell you a little about me! I originally grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I received my undergraduate degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. While I was there, I got a taste for that warmer weather, so I thought “why not go further south?” So, I received my clinical doctorate in audiology from UNC in Chapel Hill and I’ve been in the triangle area ever since. Something I love about working in our clinic is I love the teamwork we have with all of our staff and the other audiologists. I love being able to put the patient first and always be able to do the right thing. Something that is a little unique about our clinic is that our owner founded the clinic because he wanted there to be a place where he knew there could be best practice audiology, and so, that’s something I love about working here that best practice and patient centered care truly comes first. It’s not a clinic that works with one hearing aid manufacturer, because it’s easier or simpler to keep track of. It’s not a place that is trying to fit a certain number of patients in in a day and we have rushed appointments. And I love taking my time and doing everything as thoroughly as possible the right way, the way I learned in school. And unfortunately, that’s just hard to find, and so I’m truly lucky and glad to be working here. Some of the folks I really enjoy working with include those who have cognitive decline or dementia. I have extensive experience with that population from undergrad, and so I’m happy to work with the children or family members of those patients to make sure they have everything they need for their hearing needs. I also really enjoy working with musicians. I’ve worked with all sorts of musicians, all different levels of experience, from the symphony to professional musicians to rock bands. I love getting to know their individual music, their individual instrument, and it’s not at all uncommon for me to see someone in the lobby with their instrument in their case with them, because I often have folks come in and play live in the clinic, so I can make sure that everything is custom adjusted for their specific music listening needs and their finely tuned acoustic hearing that they have from being a musician. Another thing that I love working with patients on is figuring out their exact right hearing aid to suit their need. And that’s one of the reasons we work with all seven hearing aid manufacturers. I don’t like to feel stuck with only one or two options, because there are many different nuances between different kind of hearing aids, and so I take pride in keeping up to date on the research, reading all the newest literature, and making sure I’m matching each patient with whatever hearing aid is going to suit their lifestyle, their budget, and their listening needs as best to their ability. I hope you learned a little bit about me today. I look forward to meeting you and have a wonderful rest of your day!
