Cutting Off Power to Traffic Lights
Sometimes utility companies shut off the power to traffic signals without notifying the maintainer of the signal. Thankfully, in this case, they reached out to me in advance to let us know of the power loss.
That's when you start finding out how good your battery back up preventative maintenance program really is! Mine--not so good....

    Like your video!! I found other than direct lightning strikes or strikes that like to reverse right up the low resistance path of earth grounding systems -- lightning is notorious for destroying any electronic equipment that utilizes large loops of wire from either intense B fields or EMF coupling, regardless of TVR protection or GDTs. For your ground inductive loops do they interface directly or do they first go through an isolation transformer to help protect them?

    We use a fuck ton of 1 and 2U UPS Systems, some are always running from massive battery backups some are almost always idle, and some are just there to look pritty. Our number 1 failure mode, is a fucked cell in a battery - Easy repair. Number 2 failure mode is output capacitor failure on the filter network. Again Easy Repair and finally the most common that aint the above, the transformer cores crack due to excessive heat (no something we have in the DC but the outside units fail like this more often that not. All 3 can be repaired in house, capacitor replacement is a 2 min solder job, same for transformers, and batterys well youve seen how that goes. That failed unit is screaming blown cap.

Maybe I should find out the most common failed parts and cross reference their specs. Maybe I could find some replacement parts online somewhere. What I have noticed while working private security during the wee hours 2 to 3 to 4 AM, many intersections will stay green all the time for the primary thoroughfare unless a car appears on the minor road which would be normal. HOWEVER, after a hard rain, the lights cycle just they do at high noon! Since most every intersection is now controlled by lane cameras rather than loops buried in the roadway, I’m wondering what is causing this❓ Thanks for your outstanding informative videos👍👍

    • @streetsmartstraffic
      @streetsmartstraffic Před 2 dny

      I cannot say for sure this is the problem, but I've dealt with a similiar issue on a project recently. Many cameras are power over ethernet. The ethernet cable that is plugged into the camera up on the mastarm has the best chance of getting moisture in the connector. Everytime it rained, some of our intersections would cycle as you describe. Then after awhile, they would start working fine. We found that the contractor forgot to put dielectric grease in the connector up there. THis would prevent moisture in the connector. When a camera is affected like this, the camera processor sends constant vehicle calls for that direction to the signal controller, thus the cycling. After the connector dried up, it would work fine again. The contractor had to come back and go thru 18 intersections and install dielectric grease in every camera. Quite alot of extra work they could have avoided if they did it correct the first time. Thanks for the nice comment!

      Hey welcome and thanks for the comments! The engineers at least thought about us operational guys when they designed it. Yes, easy hot swappable. In most cabinets, you have 12V, 24VDC & 120VAC. Load switches take the logic from the traffic signal controller and converts it to 120VAC to be sent to the traffic signal indications. There's some surge protection in the cabinet, but nothing that will withstand a lightning strike. Thanks again!

    1:44 You need to set up a charge station. One string should be sitting there at float voltage ready to roll. Really a couple of strings should be ready to roll. I say this with a few decades in telecom DC power plants. Just takes one relay rack bolted down and some shelves and wires and the charger. Why are you pulling cables to check battery voltage? There are test points for a reason. Every time a cable is pulled is a potential outage. PMI and best practices.

    I didn’t know traffic lights had battery power backup. I don’t think any of the traffic lights in my town have it. If there’s a storm and the power gets knocked out, the traffic lights in the area are all dead, and you treat the intersection as 4 way stop.

    • @streetsmartstraffic
      @streetsmartstraffic Před 5 dny

      Not all intersections have them. Some municapilities don't want to spend the money as they'll just use generators or stop signs during outages. We get them in our spec on every new or upgraded cabinet design. You'll usually see them on higher speed corridors due to the increased danger posed by outages at those critical intersections... The fan of that backup unit looked really clogged! Why don’t use LiFePo4 batteries as replacement instead of Pb? Tnx for the vids!

      Yes as I answered a few of the other comments, this was a dirty cabinet. I don't really have an answer for battery question I had to look up a little about them.. It said the drawbacks are: higher cost, slower charging speed, lower discharge rate, and limited temperature range are some of the drawbacks of using LiFePO4 batteries. Maybe their not compatible or optimable with the system? I'm not sure... You're welcome and Thanks for commenting!

      @@streetsmartstraffic I've had alot of success reconditioning lead acid batteries on a decent charger, especially the sort with the caps as you can rewater them... But only managed to get about 50% capacity back. Even with half the capacity, probably not bad to keep on the truck for an "up shit creek" scenario when you don't have any in the shop or can't get to them.

    I can see why that battery backup went RIP.... That fan.... must have been a pretty harsh heat stroke before that battery backup threw in the towel and said "bye bye". Might be good to invest in a battery powered vacuum cleaner (like milwaukee M18 VC2), so you could do some "preventative cleaning" inside those closets, especially around fans and ventilation holes.

      You're right Sebastian! Many of these cabinets have either been upgraded or are finally get cleaned up. As you know, alot of stuff already takes a beating from heat--they don't need all the dirt as well! I've since purchased a large wetvac to do some major cleaning in these cabinets. Good observation!
