Product Rendering in Blender: Leica M9 Camera
Product Rendering in Blender: LeciaM9 Camera
In this video, I walk you through the entire process of converting a high-quality camera 3D model, originally designed for 3D Studio Max and Vray, to be Blender-friendly. Whether you're new to Blender or looking to enhance your product rendering skills, this tutorial covers everything you need to know to create stunning product visuals.
What You’ll Learn:
Importing and Converting the Model: Learn how to import a 3D file format into Blender, convert all the materials, reconnect textures, and clean up the model for optimal performance.
Recreating Textures Procedurally: See a walkthrough how I recreate the camera grip texture using Blender's procedural texturing tools, giving you a deeper understanding of simple texture creation.
Setting Up the Product Rendering Shot: Get insights on setting up a product rendering shot that showcases the intricate details of multi-material products, including metals, rubber, plastic, and more.
Lighting Techniques: Discover how to light your product effectively using a combination of key light, fill light, and rim light. I’ll also show you how to add additional fill lights where necessary to highlight various aspects of the product.
Advanced Lighting Setup: Learn why and how to use more than three lights to perfectly illuminate the product, ensuring that every material and detail is shown off to its best advantage.
This is the first part of a two-part series where I’ll not only teach you the technical aspects of product rendering but also how to make your shots stand out with creative lighting and texturing techniques. In part two, we’ll take it a step further by incorporating simple particle effects in the background to add a dynamic touch to our renders.

can you give the 3d product link
Yep, this is where I got the model from. 3dsky.org/3dmodels/show/sony_playstation_5_dualsense_edge_controller
when I download your Zip, it is just the .blender and a txt File, but you Import an .abc File, how do I get that?
Yes, you're correct so in the video I work in two different files. The first is the simulation file setup where you export the Alembic. The second, is the final file where you import the Alembic and setup your final shot. The file that I provide is the simulation. You can export the simulation out as an .abc file. To import into a new file or scene.
i don't know why but when i export the allembic then import the allembic and add the geometry node i can see the particule in the shader good but when i render it sometimes it disappear, especially when i duplicate the particule in blender ?
I’ve actually had an issue where I was using a Alembic mesh myself and when I rendered an animation, some of the frames did not have the Alembic mesh. It was almost like it was flickering. I’m going to have to look into this more.
@@nxstynate5505 thanks i still trying to figure it out the issue
that's the first time i hear about natron, it looks exactly like nuke lmao. the whole process looks really optimized
Yes, it’s actually a lot like nuke even some of the shortcuts. But you don’t have the price tag of nuke it’s free and you also get the practice of using nuke without paying the money lol
Hi OG Thank you for the video and for providing the data. The rendering towards the end of the video looks incredibly good. However, I'm currently finding it hard to follow how you arrived at your result. I have the problem that blender crashes everytime i set up the geo nodes (don't know if it's me or my amd gpu, we both sometimes don't want to work properly and have problems with blender :-) ). Any idea on a gumroad/patreon (onlyfans so also ok) where you upload the finished blender file for a coffee? Have a nice weekend!
In Blender 4.2 they got new Khronos view transform, and this is exhibit A of using it over AGX. It meant for product render and to display more accurate color based on the texture we feed it with (very good case for color marker product). Haven't tried it myself tho
Yes, you’re right. I can’t wait to try this out. Thanks for reminding me.
Adjust bump distance instead of bump strength. Also consider building up the "layers" (i.e. board details with elevated knots vs board grout/chamfer) making up the bump separately and adding them together. To verify bump directions and relative layer powers are correct, test them using microdisplacement first. Whatever goes into displacement scale is what should go into bump distance. Sometimes you may do something "clever" using math that looks horrifically wrong when previewed using microdisplacement. Adjusting bump strength does some weird clipping and the normals produced doesn't match what real displacement produces.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into this.
I'm just waiting for Saturday to see your tutorial lol, really nice!

The environment setup are great! Do you have a video on how you bring the megascan asset into blender?
Yes I do, you can find it in this video. I plan on making something more in depth of how to set this plugin up. At the moment you have to do some workarounds to have the plugin work in Blender 4.1. Hopefully there will be an update to this plugin since Blender is releasing a new LTS with version 4.2 in these next couple of days. czcams.com/video/5VQ0mizbM84/video.html

I happen to own this very same Akai gx747dbx. Mine has the silver compound. Originally brought it at the Japanese stereo mukeshia in April of 1984. I see them going for as much as $4,000 on eBay today.
Yeah the original model has the silver version too. That's really dope that you have the physical item. Some of these vintage items really hold their value. I plan on getting a reel to reel at some point to add to my audio signal chain. I have a all analog setup for making beats this add some more great texture to my music.
@@nxstynate5505 The ONLY difference on the silver face model is the dbx button on mine is dark green anodized aluminum and the model shows a silver button. Whether AKAI changed it during production, I don't know. But yeah, I've had mine in a studio for forty years. Just did a PM on it last year, replaced rubber belts for the tension arms, new lamps and went through the mechanicals. Tested it on an audio analyzer and printed a test report for when I decide to sell it. The oldest trick is to feed the output of the left channel into the right while using sound on sound feature to record the left output to the right. This creates a delay effect. Was pretty crazy when I first discovered this in 1968 with a Panasonic deck I had bought at the time.
Great video, thanks! I hadn't come across Flamenco before (I'm moving over to Blender from C4D and a bit new to it all). Would love to see a walk-through on Flamenco. Good luck with the animation and the Neovim community too it's good to see how well thought through the animation is.

Yeah it depends on the path you want to take. Initially when I started my whole goal was to be a character modeler at Blur Studios. These days I am a generalist with emphasis more on the finishing portion. Yes, it’s most definitely good to understand modeling and how to model though. I understand these principles and the know how but time does come into play.

Awesome video what would you say is the main benefit of using this compositor rather than post process in photoshop ?
Great question! The main difference between node-based compositing (like in Natron) and something like Photoshop boils down to how you manage your workflow and effects. In Photoshop, you're working with layers. Each effect or adjustment you make is stacked on top of each other in layers. This can get a bit messy if you have lots of adjustments because you're constantly tweaking and re-ordering those layers to get the right look. Node-based compositing, on the other hand, is like a flowchart. Each node represents a specific effect or adjustment, and you connect them together in a tree-like structure. This makes it super clear and organized, because you can see exactly how each effect feeds into the next. You can easily make changes or experiment without messing up your whole project. I’ll be sharing some other methods of post-processing as I release more videos. Thanks asking the question.
good job
Thanks

Im working on some more videos. However what other product rendering walkthroughs would you all like to see? Or let me know if you all have any other ideas…
Nice. I think everyday stuff would be very useful. Cause everyone kind of knows of the real thing looks. A razor/shaver, a pen, … such stuff. Just an idea tho
Also if the models would be free do download from somewhere, we could try to follow the steps parallel to the video. But idk if the is enough quality on those free stuff …
@@bodobanali I like it thank you for the feedback.
@@bodobanali yeah that's the only consideration is to find good models out there. But I am always on the lookout for free models so I'll continue the work to find some everyday items to use.
3:58 people who say "oh its not a real project you did because you did not model everything yourself" clearly have never done client work, because if you did then you would understand a concept called deadlines, which if not met result in no money being given to you because you couldn't finish the project, now for example if a beverage brand comes to me with a strawberry soda and asks me to create an ad with a deadline of 3 weeks and I think of adding lots of strawberries getting pureed into the can, then the only thing I'm thinking of working on is the animation of the strawberries turning into puree and entering the soda can, I'm definitely not modeling the strawberries and the only reason why I would model the soda can is if the can was vastly different from traditional soda cans. Also say I want trees in the background, am I gonna waste my time modeling each tree that's going to be in the background? I thinks its ridiculously stupid to do so not to mention a waste of the clients time and money.
Absolutely, these are all good points.
Thanks for video, it is excellent when you explain how do you do things in your project. In my opinion that is more useful for people who are more advanced user or amateur instead to do videos for example "Make this in 5 minutes". I really enjoy watching it so i would really appreciate if you make more videos like this. Best regards. :)
My goal is to share my methods versus doing step by step of every button I press. Being that I’ve done this for what I consider a long-time there are nuances that I like to share from a high-level. Plus my schedule along with producing videos to go into more details would slow me down so much. Thank you for watching the video I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Nice video and great outputs! For those struggling to get a similar effect... make sure the Vortex is set to a 'Point' shape instead of the default 'Plane', this is the setting which enables the generation of the centre hole/void in the particles

Hey Nate, digging these blender tutorials. Have you started replacing Max with Blender yet?
It's a slow transition however both software packages have there advantages. I have too many assets in Max to make a full transition at the moment. My guess, is that it will take a lot of time if I want to make a full transition.
Step by step instructions would be really great for this kind of thing. Kinda frustrating to try and replicate this setup and have the particles just bouncing around the box.
First off, thank you for the feedback. I'll take your comment into consideration when it comes to providing material that follows more of a step-by-step process. I've always preferred providing walkthroughs and concepts to help others develop their own ideas from my content. Next, you mentioned that the particles are crashing into the walls. This may be due to not setting your Force to a high enough negative value. There needs to be enough force to counteract the vortex’s centrifugal force. I hope this feedback helps.
@@nxstynate5505 I've tried lots of different variations for all the various forces, I just can't seem to get the same vortex effect as you. I might get an initial "twist" to the particles and then they just end up filling the box randomly by about halfway through the animation. I see your force is set -0.2... Even if I set mine to -1500 it doesn't work. Even just a quick tour of each relevant setting would be fine to make sure we're not missing anything.
@@bn5055 I've uploaded the simulation file to the link below so that you can go through it and break down the settings yourself. You can download it from the GitHub repository below. @@nxstynate5505 thanks for that. The main difference I can see is that you have Collision turned on for the particles as well as the box. Watching the video again this is shown very briefly about 4:18 but I missed it - the settings themselves were minimised.

Good tips throughout the video. Could you please explain how to create the entire simulation? Because, for example, I'm trying to create the collisions between the particles and the inner walls of the box, but it's applying to the emitter plane and not the particles itself. Thank you!
In this scene, the particles are not performing any kind of self-collision. The particles are set to collide with the walls of the box. One thing I may not have mentioned is that I flipped the normals of the box to ensure that they are colliding with the walls. Things to note: Particle Emitter - Emitting from a plane that's the same size as the box. - All particles have the lifetime of the animation timeline, and they all emit from the beginning. Vortex - Spins all of the particles. Force - Pulls the particles back in so that they are pushed up against the walls of the box. Use a negative number for this. Turbulence - Helps to create variation in the simulation so that it's not too perfect. Hope this helps!
