I get it; they see lots of people searching google to find products to buy, probably a big use case of search. But part of the fun of shopping is the act of shopping. People like searching and discovering new things. Yes there are some people who are looking for a stem bolt and simply want whatever at the lowest price, but anyone who shops on Etsy or girls looking at clothing, are looking to get a sense of ideas and establish new preferences. Agents are absolutely amazing, but you only want them to automate boring schnizz stuff that you really don't want to do. Even if AI can generate amazing art, that doesn't mean all people will throw out their paint brushes or give up music. In fact if we automate accounting it gives us more time to spend time on things we enjoy. Be that painting, music, or shopping.

Elon has been the most famous outspoken advocate for regulations and control of ai. Their "evidence" is just emails other people sent to him. His "Yup" doesnt agree to sell the company. He suggests giving away his own companies stock, not giving away open ai stock.

Not putting anything in the cloud, no thanks.

Yea ChatGPT fanboys are hating on everything Google. I myself am more impressed with googles update. They'll have emotional voices soon too. C'mon...its Google duh. The pending thing is a problem though. Release these things google.

1. NotebookLM is pretty good. It was released lowkey by Google many months ago but I am curious if the context window will be the same as the 1M context window offered by Gemini 1.5 Pro. Google actually released A LOT of cool AI products many months ago on their labs.google site. 2. The SPEED at which they bring these things out is what is lacking. As one person already commented, they demo'd the Google Assistant calling a hairdresser over 5 years ago. 3. I am all in on OpenAI but don't sleep on that Gemini 1M context window. I uploaded a whole TEXTBOOK from college on Radiation Physics and questioned it and it was dead on and I still had a little over half the context tokens left. It does get really slow as you get close to about 70% of the context window but it's pretty solid. 3. Overall, if Google can get these products and features out before the summer, OpenAI will have real competition and that will be a good thing for us as end users.

There's nothing fundamental here, their whole presentation was US West Coast middle class retail lifestyle. Rather than unveiling something core that can be applied broadly they've decided on a few insanely narrow use cases. Is the trip planner polished and well constructed and is the photos thing cool? Yeah sure, but it ain't moving the dial AT ALL on AI tech. They could use AI to redefine "search" or "information retrieval" but they are too anxious about retaining the status quo for the ad dollars. They fail to realise someone else will do it and they'll just lose this market anyway.

Even the supercut is boring. Fortunately OpenAI has the solution -- use GPT-4o.

I wonder how many of these products from google will be around in 5 years. They're notorious for suddenly killing off products.

Just watched their webinar "Turbocharge Your Marketing with Gemini for Google Workspace Online". Amazing what is possible.

I've installed Gemini on my pixel 5 phone and it's pretty good. Definitely not as good as what Openai has shown with "Her", but it's way better than what Google has offered previously...

The glasses are the same as their Project Iris glasses that they showed off for live language translation. They have had these prototypes with actual AR displays for almost 3 years.

They can add any nimber of features to their freewares, but Google's search engine is really threatened now. Using ChatGPT regularly. It does what I used to do with Google search manually. Collect data and summarize. And using it on iPhone using voice is million years ahead of Siri.

Every tech demo these days feels like it's targeted marketing for three letter agencies. "Here, we can see the new Google Photos searching every photo a person has taken for their license plate number. Note that this is possible for any other personal information that a suspect may have inadvertently stored in their photo gallery. Great for catching those pesky car thieves on Instagram!"

Gimini 1.5 quality is dropped significantly in the last couple of days, same use cases and worse performance 😢

Google are near the bottom of companies I trust with AI. After their woke AI fiasco and their monopoly on so much of the modern tech infrastructure as it is (plus their willingness to spy for the government on citizens), it would be a disaster if they won the AI arms race.

Google didn't make much live interactions with their AI during the Demo. That is all i need to know.

Seems like this event was for shareholders, can't have the stock price drop due to the OpenAI announcements! Too many of the "coming soon" announcements. Funny enough, I think Google can come out on top in the AI competition. I think it's a mistake to charge at this point, they should get everyone using it for free before offering premium services. But they win by being everywhere. All Google Office subscribers- just make it natural to integrate. It should be the platform approach. Everything feels overly complex now because this is a reflection of their development process- right now numerous autonomous teams within Google are working on their own AI apps. And because this announcement was rushed to follow OpenAI's announcement, they've not yet been able to make AI the platform. Operating systems that are AI first will become the standard. Google and all FAANG companies will dominate.

Google IO was just emptiest IO so far. nothing exciting, it seems like the only thing they did is x2 context window, astra project which is basically ai application not a new a model, but in openai demo, the model gpt4o was entirely new. Of course, I am only talking about Large Language models not other Gen AI
