Here's one you don't see too often. A Shuttle XPC small form-factor PC, based on a FlexATX motherboard. Their claim of space-savings might be dubious, but they sure are an interesting bit of oddware.

    Okay... my friend .. before destroy by open a HDD like that _(witch it looks it was mechanically fine by the way)_...... you need to clean his power contacts at the least.. _(that behavior is from an HDD that is not getting the enough juice to properly start running you know)_.... you need to see if it is getting the proper voltage in the board.... or some bad cap is pulling down the voltage in it.... or simple oxidation in the contacts of the connector are maybe loosing half the voltage right there............ remove the board from de HDD... clean it... inspect it you see some bad component??.......... veeeeery common... is the silicon thermal pads discomposing shorting thing with the nasty liquid they lose when discompose........... is contact in the board also... that connect to board whit the engine coils inside they needs to be clean and deoxid...... and one or more terminal with many springs contacts that connect to the heads and to arm coils.... all those needs to be clean and dioxide also.... _(this goes for modern drive too.. some times an HDD said that it have bad sector because is not getting in the heads the proper voltage because those spring contacts are dirty or oxidated.. is the first thing to do when a HDD show bad sectors clean all his contacts)_ ........... with a thermal camera.. you shroud see if it is any component in the board that look to be overheating/shorting by most probably some bad cap that needs to be replace... etc... etc..

    I was a dad during the 80's 90's Made my first computers after first buying an old 486 66mhz from Gateway. I''ll never forget having problems and being on tech support with a lady who changed one line in the configsys file. she put a comma in and it fixed whatever was wrong. I was sooo impressed. Before that I had a VIC20 I used to play space invaders on. Lovved making computers back then and still do.

    I've broken so many of those plastic spudgers! They kinda suck honestly. It's ironic that you use a guitar pick because I've been using one for a long time as well. It's great what one used for tools back in the day before the internet/Amazon made everything readily available. Improvising and using what we had on hand to get the job done is how I grew up and I think the guitar pick gets put in the kit with the duct tape and channel lock for most versatile and used tools for diy or any job for that matter. Great content ! Keep up the good work! Also if you sprinkle baking soda on super glue it will harden instantly, greatly reducing the dry time. It also enhances the durability of the bond.

    I had an AMD XP 2200 one of these with a fanless (custom zalman) ATI All-In-Wonder card. The graphics cards fins met the intake holes on the sides of the case, so it worked out perfectly. And I loved the heatpipe exhaust system. The only thing that kept the machine from being perfect was the loud power supply and exhaust fan. If I have time this summer, I’m going to build my silent SFF system with an AMD G series chip. It would probably take up the space of the 5 1/2 optical drive of the Shuttle XPC, and it wwould be the 20th anniversary edition of my original Shuttle XPC.

  • @JarrodCoombes
    @JarrodCoombes Před 5 dny

    So those machines were sold as "bare bones" to OEMs to build up. They just added the CPU, RAM, Storage and optical drives. I owned my own company at the time, and we built and sold tons of those Shuttles, in a large number of variations. Small businesses loved them, since they took up so little space and were very quite. I don't think we ever sold a blue one like that though. Great little machines, easy to put together too.

At the teacher's instruction, they were all turned on simultaneously with that that two tone POST sound echoing throughout the classroom.

    I still have two Shuttle boxes in regular use, and another that gets occasional specialty use for Win 7-era programs. I built a work/play PC out of a box like that one for my niece as she headed off to college. Even put a TV tuner/capture card in it. The area (and panel) below the optical drive was made to accommodate a 3.5-inch floppy drive. In most cases, (by the time these boxes were released) the slot was filled with multi-function units, usually housing flash card readers, additional USB ports, or audio I/O, in addition to the floppy drive ...

    I’ve got 3 x 24” Full Tower Cases here although I’m not sure of what Hardware is in them now, They are ATX Cases as they have Micro Switches for the Power Buttons instead of the Mechanical Buttons, One is empty if I remember correctly, 2 of them belonged to Brothers who no longer wanted them so they ended up at mine, I’ve also got a 19” Intel Server with Dual Slot 1 Pentium III Processors and it’s bloody heavy! I was absolutely Gobsmacked when I bought my latest Case which is a Cooler Master Cosmos C700P as it’s close to 26” and weighs a Ton! 😂🇬🇧

    With 2 modems, you could "shotgun" your connections and get 2x whatever your speed was, in my case it was 28.8, the lines where I lived never supported 56K. So only way to get close to 56K was 2 DUN connections.

    It’s too bad so many systems of this era have the evil rechargeable ni-cad batteries, but those batteries also probably last way, way beyond the intended life of these systems. I mean, in the time these computers were built, they were obsolete within a year or so, so even a 10 year expected lifespan of the components would much longer than most of them were actually used. Now, 30 years after these systems were built, you can hardly fault the OEMs for using batteries that leak and destroy the systems decades after they were built.

      I would rate the ECS Motherboard that’s in System 2 the same as ASRock, I feel that they are both budget crappy boards, I may rethink that with ASRock as I’ve been hearing good things about them lately, I’ve always like the Pioneer CD / DVD Burners as in System 2, My Brother had that very Case in System 3 which I had when he upgraded but ended up either Selling it or Binning it many years ago, Probably when I moved in 2015…

  • @AJComputerServicesUK

    Believe one of my Brothers bought a Medion PC similar to System 1 from an ALDI here in Birmingham, UK, I was not a Fan due to very little flexibility with Upgrading it, Out of curiosity, Have you ever heard of a Piece of Software called Sequoia view (Think that’s how it’s spelt?), It runs in a Windows environment and It’s a great little utility that displays what is taking up space on a drive, I believe it also works with Optical & Removable Media too, Also, If i have an issue with a CD / DVD drive reading disks then I generally open the Tray and blow into it and you be surprised at how often the Drive will read the Disk after I’ve done that! Keep churning out the Great Videos while injecting the Humour where you can! 🙂🇬🇧

    That power supply is not in fact fine. 12.7v is far too high. ATX spec calls for +/-5% on all positive rails and +/-10% on all negative rails. I'm going to say that the PSU has failed capacitors. It's also likely a junk group regulated power supply, so the rails are going to be way off with no load applied. Shuttle boxes are notorious for capacitor plague, their machines had worse capacitor plague than virtually any other computer manufacturer.
