Ben. The ideas that you express here about compression helped me be able to solidify and verbalize what I suspect to be the reason I dislike the way most of the machines that Elektron makes sound, and I suspect this is why many others seem to dislike the elektron "character" as well. I suspect that Elektron has engineered a master compressor on the main outs of most of their hardware and that it's clamping down so far that it basically strips the output of any dynamics that could have helped inform the level of energy a track has. So without processing the output to counteract that everything coming out of them sounds extremely flat and just meh. Also some of their effects just sound super digital, but that has nothing to do with my theory about the elektron "character" because even without using any of the effects I still feel the output has that lifelessness to it.

can anyone help re loading the presets into vital? when I go to load the file into vital its transparent so I can't do it. why? cheers

Nembrini do freeware versions of both the rat and the screamer and they sound pretty f good (I owned the tube screamer, never had the rat tho)

I actually learned this completely by myself after trying for years to figure out how these dance music writers made such slick sounding chords. I’ve taken years of music school and classical theory, and when it clicked that it’s just the same chord value for every chord but the root is changing it blew my mind, but was also so simple it almost made me cry. It makes you sound like a genius to classical minded folks.

When I reference like you do I realized it takes a lotttt longer to find the right samples that match my favorite tracks. Since I’m a beginner and I don’t know how to layer I just try to find the right source from the beginning so I don’t have to mix or master just match volume levels by the reference. But my question to you is as a beginner with so many sample options at one point is it too much time trying to find a similar clap or kick or hat that match the reference. Should I set a timer finding a similar sample or keep going until I think I found that right one ?

so thats why some hard house songs are hard to mix!

This video is awesome and your patience is phenomenal. Unfortunately I was out with friends and couldn't catch the live session. I'm so glad you said what you said about limiting your options. I'm always getting DMs from other beginning producer friends about some new VST or technique they saw on youtube from XYZ content creator. When I ask why they think they needed it, the response is always "I'll have more options!" I usually reply "Yes, and you'll get less done."

I had this in my ‘watch later’ for months, now finally watched it.. What a great tutorial! Understanding the basics of synths was never as approachable! I always struggle with synths in general and never felt able to grasp it and make good use of it, but now you take away the ‘rocket science’ and it feels much more doable for an average bob like me 😊 Looking forward to part two! 2 step is stand alone style that evolved from UK garage (house) but definitely not a garage house anymore and more of break beat, and later 2 step evolved into new styles like grime and the dubstep that after all was dumbed down to awful brostep by lazy hacks like Skrillex 🤮.
