Ever notice how music in the 60's and 70's music was generally upbeat and positive, with notable exceptions, and today it's all about depression and people not coping? Yeah...I have.

She even rapped with John during part of the song too. I think she was just tired of the same old shit of lip syncing and became complacent and cavalier toward the performance. Besides, anyone with half a brain knew it was lip synced as well. It's not like they were trying to fool anyone else. It would be hard to do a live version of that song, that was fairly true to the original with all of the background musical accompaniment and studio enhancement. They could have performed an acoustic type version like Jose Feliciano did later on (which is quite good)....but you know what?... Audiences back then expected the original artists to perform the version they heard on the radio, and would be unhappy with a live acoustic version, even if done very well. Hence, it was lip synced. Not so much an issue today in music... stage performances have much better digital aids, support and enhancement when live. Just listen to GaGa's Born this Way as an example, either live or recorded. Both are different, but very true to the original sound of the popular recording played on radio.

I was in high school when this song came out. All we had was a radio in the kitchen and every time that song started I would run to the radio to hear it clearly.
