    wpattern would you use to teach a 10 yr old to begin quilting?

    • @piecesofthepast
      @piecesofthepast Před 17 hodinami

      The first thing to do when teaching a child/youth to machine sew is to use an unthreaded machine and a piece of cardstock. Have the child learn seam allowance by "stitching" a straight line along the seam guide line. This will allow the child to familiarize themselves with the machine sounds, buttons, and functions. When ready to begin sewing a quilt project, a simple 9-patch will always fit the bill. Once the top is the size they want, sew it right sides together to the backing leaving a hole for turning (like making a pillow), then "quilt" it by either tying, or sewing lines across (in the ditch, or not). Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you have not already! Happy quilting ~Deborah

    Best place to get fabric cheap is Thrift stores - I frequent my local Salvation Army and Goodwill for fabric - sheets, curtains, etc - anything that is in good condition and 100% cotton, I take it home, wash it and put it in my stash so when I want to make something I just pull from that. A large sheet can give you about 4 yards or so of fabric for a couple bucks.

    I really enjoyed the video! 😀 If I may ask 3 quick questions: I'll need a machine only for topstitches(?) it's a decorative seam which will also close the opening after turning. Is it hard/easy to do the lockstitches? My "normal" machine does it automatically and I've never done it myself and they'll need to look good bc it's on the top. Can I do a color change like with overlock machines, so knoting one thread to the next one? I have to do a lot of color changes and threading the machine each time would become tedious I think. And at last: I often have to shorten the last stitch before a corner but sometimes I only see it when I've gone to far, so can you go "one stitch back"? Thank you in advance!

    • @piecesofthepast
      @piecesofthepast Před měsícem

      Great questions! Lockstitches are done with the lever on the bottom right of the machine and are very easy to accomplish. Color changes can be done by knotting one thread to the next one, provided the eye of the needle you are using is large enough. I would not really recommend it, as the eye would need to be considerably larger and then it would probably not be the correct size for the thread you were using. I am not sure. You would have to try that out on your own. I manually change my thread multiple times a day, sometimes, and it is a really simple process for me. Finally, backing out of a stitch can be done, but if you have gone that extra stitch and the needle has come back to the up position, then the stitch is made and there is no backing out of it at that point. I hope that makes sense. Overall, I love this machine for top/edge stitching, but the things you mention seem like they could be better accomplished with different machines. I would recommend that you find a dealer, if possible, and test drive this machine to see if it will do what you want it to do. Thanks for watching and for the questions! ~Deborah
