But captive chimpanzees are truly worthless, disgusting, annoying self-centered embiciles. If I had to take care of a chimp, the world population of chimps would instantly decrease by one.

Habituating a chimp into a pet is a wholly selfish, seriously cruel thing to do. The price for having three or four yrs of novel cuteness and bonding is 50-60 yrs of life filled w/ misery, confusion, and genuine depression. The very best, and rarest, possible outcome would be finding a sanctuary to take in the animal, but it can still never live a full life because it was robbed of its prime developmental yrs to learn the complex nuances of chimpanzee inter-relations and society. This leaves the chimp forever an outcast to be bullied, rejected, or even killed.

I don't think that these people did the right thing by keeping a chimp in an apartment or at the zoo, but perhaps you could figure out what they're saying before commenting? A swedish theatre wanted a chimpanzee for a play and found Ola at Öland's zoo. The family taking care of him att the time did NOT keep him as a pet! He went back to the zoo where he was born when his acting was no longer needed. Sadly, Öland's zoo sold Ola to a horrible zoo in Thailand where he now just sits in a cage. Both the family, animal rights activists and the king of Sweden have tried to set Ola free, but to no avail. He's still alive in Thailand today. That family still visits him sometimes and he always lights up when he sees them.
