First of all.. if your using Bondo brand filler....just stop.. seak a professional.. Secondly... filler is designed to fill dents. If yoy need a easy to spread filler... buy a real filler... third.. the product your trying to make is a glazing putty... its already designed and developed... dont ruin the chemical reaction of the filler and harder by adding a new variable... beginners

    5:42 Spoiler alert. So, I see questions here about whether you must also use the resin's hardener AND the paste Bondo hardener. Answer is NO. I did a test with A Bondo straight out of can, B Bondo mixed with resin and combined hardeners, and C, Bondo mixed with resin and ONLY Bondo paste hardener. B and C were way smoother and flowed-out very flat. C with ONLY Bondo paste hardener cured exactly the same as with mixed hardener. ALSO... I did the test on a flexible surface and all 3- A, B, and C had the SAME cured flexibility, concluding that there is NO extra brittleness or softness when Bondo is thinned with Resin. This is especially helpful with thin "skim" coats, as you don't need to totally rely on the spreader to shape; it will flow-out to some extent over uneven surfaces leaving a much more uniform skim coat.

  • @leeharrison2722
    @leeharrison2722 Před 4 dny

    The issue of course is that thinned filler can't be built up on a vertical surface ... if you can orient your surfaces flat or put on very thin coats ... no problem. But it's pretty hard to do that working on the side-panels of a car. In that case you have a few choices ... one obvious one is do most of your build-up with the stock bondo, grind back and then do a thin coat for surface quality... but ... Personally I almost never work with bondo anymore, fundamentally because it is bloody expensive and it isn't a great filler. And it doesn't bond or hold to surfaces all that well -- three big strikes right off the bat. The only good thing it does have going for it is that it sets up fast, and that's why body shops use it -- time is money. But for everything I do I use MGS-285 ... an aircraft-grade epoxy, and almost always thicken with microballoons. This is far better end-quality, also much lighter. It is much slower hardening unless you can UV cure. It's also very slightly gritty if you have mixed it as dry as is recommended for aircraft work. But it sands well, and leaves a surface that any good primer will fill beautifully, you don't even need a high-build primer.

    • @guzzifabrication3448
      @guzzifabrication3448 Před 4 dny

      The video really isn't about " thinning " the filler the main purpose is eliminating pin holes and if the filler is too thick due to sitting on the shelf making it pliable again. One can change the consistency to adapt to an application, but that is the last concern. Thanks for the comment !

  • @randalllindemann3545

  • @SuperBoppy
    @SuperBoppy Před 4 dny

    Probably could do this right on the pallet, adding a little resin at a time until the consistency is right, instead of thinning the whole can at once. That way you can adjust for a smaller job that you need just a little filler for. Like someone commented before, I use bondo to patch woodworking and carpentry projects, wood repair, etc.

      @@guzzifabrication3448 OK-- I had the load shift towards the back on a trailer one time and I got a nasty sway on the interstate. I like the trailer, I am debating trailer vs. flatbed truck on my mobile welding business. Thanks

      @@chriscosby2459 The trailer pulls great, I can lift the tongue by hand, as long as the main weight or load is over the axle you won't have any issues. I see alot of ex-welding rig trucks.... I guess it depends on usage, if your a welder chasing it everyday, then building a truck makes sense or a great compromise is a skid.

    Why is the.can of filler only half full? Why does Bondo have no instructions of how much hardener to filler? The video shows a tiny amount of hardener to filler. So the can of filller should be nearly full, not half fulll.

      Great question, the can should be at least 3/4 full, and the hardener to filler ratio..... very complex question and the simple answer is put some filler on a mixing board maybe 3'' x 3'' square add 1'' line of hardener, mix and test results and adjust for you and application. Hardener ratio is affected by ambient temperature, amount of hardener add, etc, etc... so many variables will cause the mix to not harden, cure slowly or too quickly.

    Useful but why spend 10 minutes to say what can be said in 2 minutes.

      When you are letting the mix dry on the mixing board that you don't have to clean off and for the video's sake..... yes, you do skippy.....

    What is a”DA?” It would be helpful if you’d define such terms or abbreviations as you narrate the video. Thanks!
