Although the Sony 2010 is a formidable radio on shortwave the reason it is considered to be number one is on medium wave and I guarantee you it'll do a little bit better than Tecsun. In the favor of Tecsun they have the Texas Instruments computer chip which is a game changer
The Sony synchronous detection is much better than most radios with the only other one that works very well would be the Lowe radio the HF 150
Apparently you don't know how to properly use a synchronous detector. This particular feature is coming in handy mainly when you have an interfering station just above or just below your DX frequency. You turn on the synchronous detector and you have two choices to use the upper side band or Lower Side Band to enhance the intended signal. But when you have a relatively strong signal the synchronous detector isn't really going to do much good
Thanks for the nice video! I read from the manual that you need an isolated transformer to connect to any external antenna. Not sure it will make any difference though.
Здравствуйте! Может ли Belka конкурировать с Drake R8? Или это совсем разные высовые категории? Спасибо за Ваше видео, очень интересно!
In my opinion the Belka is as sensitive and selective as the Drake. The Drake is much easier to use, has a better speaker, and a better Synchronous AM.
A tip passed on to me from an oldtimer many years ago to help receive super weak signals. Turn AGC to off or fast, reduce RF gain, increase AF gain, and if there is a good low noise pre-amp built into the receiver try switching that on while reducing RF gain further. Try it and see if it works for you, it should be good on the Wellbrook. Cheers from Northern Ireland, Alan, GI0OTC
I just picked up an AOR Ar-8000 for $40 at a local hamfest.🎉🎉

My malachite sdr is the size of a book and covers from 50khz to 2000 mhz. Technology has said goodbye to all these boat anchor radios which can break your backbone 😅
Like your stands!!!!!
WOW!! Thanks so much for this video!! Years ago I worked for Monitoring Times (shortwave Magazine) I had the R2000 with numerous modifications always wanted the 5000 BEAST!! What type of trap dipole antenna were you using?
Thanks for your comments. My antenna is a Wellbrook loop antenna mounted outdoors running through a series of Stridsberg Engineering Multicouplers

@dieselten01, if you use Mod A1 and BFO 1kHz you can also receive SSB (USB or LSB) and you can use all IF-Filters 150 Hz, 300Hz, 600Hz, and so on ! 73 de DF8RU
I never thought of that! Excellent information, thank you for sharing
I'm sure there are cheaper ways of hearing static.
Does Icom no longer make this radio or something?
I haven’t checked in several months. A quick look at their web site should answer your question
I bought a 6790, I didn't know there was an internal speaker.. i have to use headphones. It's also missing the ISB board. It's built like an aircraft carrier. it only has what is strictly needed. I was gunna get a tentec 340 before this one but i got an amazing deal on the 6790. maybe one day i'll get a tentec 340.
Tentec 340 pretty one of the best there is
I have read many different opinions about the device. I actually wanted to buy one but I'm afraid of investing €400 in junk. I want a receiver for the garden without a lot of effort. Would you recommend it? It shouldn't be used with large antennas. You have a top channel, more like that!
Thank you for your comments. I do not recommend the DSP2 overall. However if only to be used outdoors on the whip antenna it might be ok provided you learn how to work all the un natural controls to minimize bleed through.
If the Icom 705 is within your budget you should get it. It is an amazing radio and if you add in its mobility and internal battery, then there is nothing better to take into the garden. You will have to figure out an antenna but that shouldn’t be hard
thank you for the quick and detailed answer. The 705 would be a good alternative. Thank you very much. Take care
My issue with the Belka is, it’s a weird form factor to walk around with and hold in your hand… other then that I agree, it’s awesome
And you are 100% aware of its size before you buy it. You don’t get it to be a desktop radio - it fits in your shirt pocket!
@@dieselten01 yes, but try walking down the street and tuning around on 20m while walking. Tough to do
Rhode told me she wanted an external speaker because the R5000 has a good quality speaker built in.
Rhode already charges enough for their radios. They should just put in a good speaker and stop complaining
@@dieselten01 Japanese know to please the customer and make a good integral package. Maybe by putting not the premium electronic components but making it pleasing to the eyes and ears. And also better handling. The rode looks so industrial and that little tuning knob can frustrate
I hear you about Yaesu shutting off some controls on AM. On my Yaesu FT DX 1200 I can use the contour and notch on AM but the IF shift and bandwidth control are both non functional on AM. You can only change the bandwidth from 6k to 9k, narrow and wide. Nothing else. Unlike on sideband and CW. You can change the bandwidth from 4k down to 50hz. But not AM or FM.
Finally!! Someone who gets it!!!
Malahit doesn't like loop, overloaded front end, Belka realy good receiver, good to see your vids again, i like the 705 as well, matt
Malahit DSP2 do like loop if used properly.
@@gyorgypalasti9709 yes, but it is extremely complicated to achieve that. There is also no consistency across the bands, what works on one band is terrible on another- for no obvious reason. Look at the 705, it is extremely stable across the whole spectrum. It doesn’t freak out for no reason. It handles the application of the controls consistently and logically. The DSP2 is wild and crazy with no logic
Thanks Matt!
@@dieselten01 I managed to get consistent performance across the bands from the Malahit DSP2 & Wellbrook loop combo. I prefer to use the Wellbrook as a passive antenna in this set up akin to the Airspy HF+ Discovery & YouLoop combo. Actually, the success of the Airspy HF+ Discovery & YouLoop combo gave me the hint that I should try to use the Wellbrook loop as a passive antenna when connected to the Malahit DSP2. In this case the "Pre-amp", the "RF gain" and the "Attenuator" on the receiver offer plenty adjustment options to achieve top-notch performance. Sure the Malahit DSP2 works somehow differently to the Icom IC-705 but just as effectively. My starting point: "Pre-amp = off", "RF gain = 0" and "Attenuator = off".
belka doesn't go above 31 Mhz.
What’s your point? This was an HF test. Just because the Belka can’t go over 31 mhz, that doesn’t make the DSP2 less of a piece of junk
Congratulations to your collection of top-notch receivers/radios! I have an Airspy HF+ Discovery SDR receiver, a Malahit DSP2 SDR receiver (v.2.40) and just sold my Belka-DSP SDR receiver. I also have a Wellbrook LA5030 indoor loop antenna. Using the Malahit DSP2 with the Wellbrook is pretty simple if you are familiar with the receiver and the antenna. There are very useful tools to help you. You can use the Wellbrook as an active antenna and in that case most of the time you do not need to ad RF gain to the Malahit and occasionally you might need to use the attenuator on the receiver. That is normal and that is the reason these features are implemented on this receiver. With sensitive SDR receivers like the Airspy HF+ Discovery and the Malahit DSP2 you might use the Wellbrook as a passive antenna and then you can adjust RF gain to the receiver. Whatever you try to listen on shortwave the Malahit DSP2 and the Wellbrook combo will offer you perfect solution if you are prepared for properly set up this combo. Mind you, the Wellbrook antennas were designed for "normal" shortwave radios not for the super-sensitive new age SDR offerings. The designer of the Airspy HF+ Discovery offers a passive loop antenna (YouLoop) to compliment the receiver and strongly advises against the use of any antenna preamp in that case. In my opinion the Malahit DSP2 should be treated similarly. It is a super-sensitive receiver and that should not be ignored when pairing it with an antenna. One other thing: You can mute the inbuilt speaker by switching to headphone mode.
I wonder how the IC-R8600 ( direct sampling ) compares to this ?
I did a video comparing both radios. Look back through my videos. The 8600 is a good radio except everything is menu driven. You have to go through multiple screens and buttons to accomplish the same thing
I heard this is best receiver in market as today...
the Icom IC-7800 has a better receiver than the Icom IC-9500. the Icom IC-7851 is best.
Great bit of kit. I'd love to get my hands on one to have a play. Thanks for showing it to us and keep em coming. All the best Graham
Thanks Graham, come on over and have a play anytime
@@dieselten01 I'd love to but think you may be across the pond from me. What's your antenna of choice for it?
@@Radiocruncher I am in Dallas, TX. I use a Wellbrook loop feeding through a series of Stridsberg Engineering Multicouplers to feed all the radios
The best receiver out there....
In fact, if you plan on walking or traveling with this Belka AllMode, you should consider purchasing a case. I chose one from the Hermitshell Travel Case series. I bought Belka AllMode last fall - with a speaker and a accumulator kit with higher capacity. Headphones are better for using this receiver when traveling and the radio works "2 x forever" with larger battery. One can also take a mini speaker if planning, for example, to spend a weekend with friends around a bonfire. I chose for this AYL Mini Speaker with 3.5 mm plug.
we know it's not the best, since you have that too, but it remains a dream, who knows if it will happen like for my IC-R9000, it took 30 years for the price to be lowered, I dreamed of it as a kid I looked at it in the catalog at the end 80s, now it is unsellable above 1000 USD, however everything I listen to with SDR-Play-DX I also hear with it and my ear prefers the analogue quality to the conversion.Ciao
hi wht program are you using for the frequency list
It’s an App on my Iphone called “SWList”
Always glad to see your videos we all know your favourite radio by now it's a bueatful radio I have the aor 6000 o to 6000ghz excellent as well
It must cost about $ 10.000
So what?
What an amazing piece of equipment.
R8 or jrc 535 ?
If you’re asking which is better? Drake R8B by a mile
why didn't you use the DSP2 NR Stupid?
Robert Who??????????????????????????????????????????? 😞 LOL BTW, the 890S does have pass band tuning...
OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The good old days!!!! 🙂 Notice how good the DNR works on the DSP2 receiver... Robert
With all those radios how do you divide antennas to all of them, splitters or coax switches?
Wellbrook antenna outside comes into a series of Stridsberg Engineering Multicouplers. They are amplified and hot all the time with the Wellbrook signal
Stridsberg are for RX only. Absolutely no TX, you will ruin them
Thank firthe video. Very usefull. Just a curiosity: what model the Bose speaker is ?
Bose Soundlink Color II. Got it on Amazon

Hey Nik, I have a question, have you tested the Yaesu FT101D for example? A comparison against the Icom 7610 would be great. Nice day, Jakub.
Hi Jakub. I actually traded my 101 for the 7610 almost 2 years ago. For SWL, the 7610 is way better
@@dieselten01 Tank You for information.
malahit is a russian junk. don't support russian economy!
Its fun to find someone that is the same situation like me and can't agree even more, if they make the Belka with a waterfall I also will pay 1k easily! I have like you a 705 and a 7610 and yesterday ordered the Belka and DSP2 because wanted to test it myself (and didnt found your video before lol)
Brilliant minds think alike! I wish someone would have made this video before I bought my DSP2. Thanks for your comments
@@dieselten01 Good thing is that I got the DSP2 in Aliexpress where they claim "Free Returns" will see. I will like to do the exact test you are doing but is not clear to me what I am supposed to use to have my Chameleon RX Loop shared to all 3 at the same time. Never heard of a device that allows me to do that.
@@angelscomputers i use a multicoupler from Stridsberg Engineering. They have both HF or VHF in either 4 port or 8 port. They are amplified so all the radios have a live antenna signal all the time. I have about 8 of these throughout my house to get my Wellbrook antenna signal to all my radios. www.stridsbergeng.com/
Perfect, thanks a lot
@@dieselten01 received my DSP2 today, first impressions: I don’t think I’m going to like it. It’s quite complicated for what I’m looking (something portable to listen on the flight with just a couple of button’s pressed) and that radio it’s more like a radio for the shack where you have to pull up the instructions and figure out things. Between the ATT, Gain and all of the stuff it made me turned off and fire up my 7610 lol. I’ll give it one more try but I’m really looking for something way simpler with a waterfall, I’m seriously considering just a used Xiegu R6100 for shortwave listening now that people are going to be selling them to get the new one . The Belka, still waiting for them to ship it. Has been a week and nothing, it looks like they take all their time. Also waiting for the multicoupler which I don’t know if is thanks to your video but I have a hard time believing that they have 14 orders of the same (4 ports) in front of mine lol. That coupler must be good haha. Saw a minutes ago the DSP3, I imagine is going to be the same complicated radio but the layout looks way better because the VFO know at the top in the DSP2 is quite awkward
The Belka is a great receiver for a new Ham for listening or QRP. We call it the spy radio. Reception is impressive. For better eaiser tuning, place the bands most used in memory and just do a memory recall, not as good as the Icom but it cost a minute fraction of the Icom with almost the same reception. You also can't put the Icon in your shirt pocket like you can the Belka. I have all three, no comment on the Malahit, I have the first version... never use it.
Well done review .. .. thanks for sharing.
@@royramdeen8864 thank you
The DNR in the DSP2 is just great, as good as the Yaesu FTDX-101MP radio... Another nice video, thanks
I'll add these points about DSP-2. This latest China-originating design is the nicest those radios have looked. But the problem with the DSP receivers including the DSP-2 is that one spends a lot of time tine tuning things on each band. There are almost too many options and as Nick notes, one has to be very careful with RF gain, the LNA functions, Pre-Amp, etc Even the Russians were unable to eliminate those multiple spikes seen in this video, though the DSP-3, the price of which has skyrocketed, appears to have made more progress.
I got my DSP2 from Georgiy in Nov 2021, expecting to maybe have an issue with spikes as per earlier reviews but they didn't materialize and it has been a non issue, the majourity of spikes are on the same frequecies as my SDPlay obviously coming from some other local noise source, no experience with these newer clones.
The Malahit DSP2 offers plenty fine-tuning options. They increase complexity and flexibility as well. Obviously they ad to the learning curve. The excellent Belka has a minimalist approach and that reduces the learning curve. It takes a brave man to make an evaluation video of the Malahit DSP2 without fully knowing its functions... It is easy for me to be critical but I'm sure if Nick had spent a couple of days more familiarizing with the receiver and the Wellbrook antenna his evaluation video would have a different outcome.
Thanks for video
Most welcome
Thank you. ❤
You're welcome 😊

Where did you get those radios!!!..I want them all
I placed an order for a Belka some days ago. Can't wait to try it. BTW. I assume the name "Belka" refers to one the space dogs launched into orbit in 1960 and returned to earth alive. The story: czcams.com/video/OCBWIi2vQ4k/video.html

@@dieselten01 If the designer is EU1ME, that is Aleksandr Buevskiy.

Hi ,Which filters can be selected in AM and SSB mode ? Thanks
Thanks for the nice review, the Belka is with usb. c charging Port? Other question what do you think the Belka our the Malachite DSP2 sdr receiver? That cost around 300 Euro on Alieexpres. Thanks Christiaan
Belka has micro usb charge port. Belka is a better receiver than a Mal DSP2, I know because I have both. The dsp2 is very finicky regarding sensitivity, it can not handle the signal from a Wellbrook. But, it is still a nice radio and it has a nice spectrum scope. Using both outdoors on the whips in a quiet location I might choose the DSP2
@@dieselten01 ok thanks for quick response. Micro usb is a deal-breaker for me. So I go for the DSP2. Thanks again, would be nice to show both working if you has some time in the future.
