Mountain bike content focused on gear, destinations and insights.
Hey everyone my name is Sage, and I created TrailSage as a place to combine my love for production with my passion for riding. I'm pretty rough on my gear, and the trails I enjoy riding are technical, so anything I review must hold up to a pretty high standard. But in addition to reviews, I also create exciting destination videos. I'll also share some insights into the things I've learned, and experiences I've had on the MTB.
If you enjoy the content and would like to support the channel join the TrailSage Tribe on Patreon. Membership will get you access to extended cuts, ad free videos, and a lot of other extra perks. Check out the link below to learn more.

This mountain is amazing!!! Stoke level was through the roof – MTB Mt Penn [FTR Series]
Mt Penn in Reading PA continues to impress and amaze! Our Sunday mountain bike ride took us through some of our favorite features and a few new ones including 1 in 10, Sam Malone, Rock Bridge, John’s Rock, Coach, and the Scorpion and Dee Snider skinnies. Most of these features are rated black and should be ridden with caution if it is your first time. This ride happened on June 2, 2024.
Note: Since most of these are not labeled on Trailforks, Dan and I came up with our own names to help us navigate around the mountain.
TRAIL DETAIL:
1 in 10 (aka Boulder Field) can be found right off List Rd, it tends to get overgrown in the summer so keep your eyes peeled for it. Sam Malone and Coach are slab tech lines located near “Chuck Chutes and Ladders” on Trailforks. John’s Rock and the Scorpion skinny are located near the Wine Cellar near “S-Turns”. Rockover can be found on “Stone Hedge”
The other skinnies featured in the video including Dee Sinder (teeter totter skinny) are located on a trail called “Twisted Sister”, but you have to venture off the main trail to find them.

If you are looking for fast flowy mountain bike trails, West End Regional Park (WERP) in Saylorsburg PA has the goods. Although it’s not considered a technical place to ride, the faster you go the harder, and more fun, it gets. I had a blast on my single speed following Dan Brodeen from Speakeasy Bikes. In fact, if you are interested in seeing more from this ride, check out the extended cut on ...

The progressive mountain bike jump lines at The Pit in Allaire State Park are dope! I got a fantastic tour from my buddy Brian @BandE-MTB, and he took me to a bunch of icon spots for a day of sessioning. I was blown away by the quality of the features and variety of options. There will be a full video coming out soon that will chronicle the entire day, but here is a small excerpt from that ride...

You nailed it for me, especially at about 7:13. I ride short, steep, rocky hills and I can get a full workout in a short amount of time and distance. Good job!
This is my local! You really captured some of the best stuff back there. I've been riding Gunpowder for years and still find hidden gems on the side of the trails regularly. Cool to see you gapping jumps I've been eyeing up for a while but not ready to send just quite yet. You should check out Susquehanna State Park next time your in the area. Some great single track back there.
Right on Keith. Thanks for the comment and kind words. I'll put Susquehanna on the list. Sage
Great review. Not a ding on you but its sad that the only cover the bases exept wind noise which is understandable , is done by a e scooter guy. Well done.
Thanks Brian. Just doing my best. Sage
But does it have mips
I do not believe it does.
Why did you choose the mini over the regular size?
I measured my head and the mini seemed like a better fit.
Skinny’s are hard for me. I probably would t have even attempted that. What’s the best way to get better at skinny’s besides just practicing?
My buddy and I did a whole podcast episode on this topic Jeff. The best piece of advice I can give you is to focus on the exit. If you want some more tips check out the pod here: czcams.com/video/qRdM5CjaADo/video.html
I got this helmet so I can feel like Master Chief from Halo lol
lol!!! Good stuff Matt
Can you make this with on ly a shovel
I suppose if you had the proper dirt/clay on your property already and time was not an issue. But it would take a very long time and I assume there would be a lot of trial and error getting the humps just right. Sage
@@TrailSage ok thanks I am doing a. Bike track project for school.
@@Only1ofmeYT Love that! Good luck.
I saw this video back when you first posted it and never commented on it. I thought I would never get a road bike but my riding group that used to do river trails on hardtails all got road bikes and I got a used one because I missed the group rides. Now I’m riding a few times a week and definitely notice my improvement on the trail especially on climbs! I don’t ride on the roads but getting out and cranking miles without having to worry about cleaning dirt between rides has been awesome and my fitness is better without getting beat up by the trails.
Yes!!! That's awesome Changa! I really appreciate you circling back to leave this comment/feedback. It's nice to know folks are getting something from the content. Hope to see you on the trails someday. Sage
Looks like they no longer make it or maybe were also sued for patents... Thanks!
Right on, thanks for letting me know. Sage
you need to tee JPX MX helmet
Thx Agus. I'll keep that in mind. Sage
My problem is Apple compatibility. I have an Apple Watch and I’ve read some other reviews that you have to pair it every time you use it. It also doesn’t hand off apparently so if I get a call I won’t be able to answer the call with these. It’s apples fault I’m sure but I need those features
Thanks for the feedback Joe. Unfortunately I don't have an Apple watch so I can not confirm or deny those issues. However I do have an iPhone and I have had no issues pairing and answering calls. Sorry I could not be more helpful. Sage
Super Nice🤙🏻
Thanks TC. Mt Penn is a special place. Sage
Ah the tire system.. only thing that bugs me, if flat, especially around here in a rural area.
I'm not gonna lie, changing the tube was a big pain in the rear end. However, I must say, I rarely get flats now that my suspension is setup correctly and my tire pressure is dialed. Hope that helps. Sage
Just did a 15 mile ride yesterday starting at Gambril State Park to Frederick Watershed. 3000 feet of climb in some of the rockiest terrain I’ve ever dealt with. Would start center or north side of Frederick watershed next time. Catocin Trail was rough.
Yeah, this area is so rocky and technical. I like your idea of starting in the center, or the north side. We have parked in a few different spots with lot of success. Thanks for the feedback and comment Michael. Sage
As a predominate road and gravel cyclist who likes to ride UCI XCO MTB hardtails as well - as a beginner MTBer. I stay away from any jumps, extreme rock or dangerous descents. This looks to be a good trail system for me as long as I stay away from any advanced loops. I would be unclipping and walking many of these sections. Thanks.
It's really the perfect place Stephanie. And when you are ready for more challenging features there are plenty to progress on. Thank you for the comment and feedback. Sage
Thank you for this video
You're welcome. If you are dealing with an injury I wish you a speedy recovery.
What kinda shorts was those the gray ones with the zipper in the back
Hey Chase, they are the NB Impact shorts. I did a review on them here: czcams.com/video/Mvpv9UC58vU/video.html
No info on the grade? No context
Sorry I thought I mentioned it, it was a Grade 2. What context where you looking for?
Awesome video! Your balance is impressive. I’m going to try to get up there some time this summer. I’m definitely gonna hit skyline and Boomsauce, what other trails are fun?
Thanks Luke. Yeah, Mt Penn is so much fun. Def hit the Network and Dane's Flow Around as well. Sage
You definitly need to show me around this route sometime!
Absolutely Vijay. I think you would love it here. Hit me up anytime. Sage
Went here for the first time on opening weekend. Lots more rock than im used to but super awesome
Yeah, it takes a while for your body to adjust to the shale/dirt but after one or two runs it starts to become real fun. Thanks for watching and commenting. Sage
Now that I finally see what it looks like I think I may need to take a trip lol
Mt Penn is amazing Dylan, but it's a maze of trails so have your Trailforks ready, lol. Sage
I've been riding there at Sterling for 5 years now and know it well. Once of the best places to ride in the Hudson Valley. You can combine a large loop at Sterling and then ride over to Ringwood through a connector trail from Long Meadow Rd where it intersects Sterling Mine Road. Take the Cooper Union climb into Ringwood and then go up the Alligator trail to the old Alligator WWII landing craft near Shepards Lake. Between the two places you could easily do a 4-6 hr. ride. Great video!
That sounds like an epic ride man! I've done Ringwood a few times and l love it. Not sure I could handle both places and all that tech in one ride though, lol. Thanks for the feedback and kind words. Sage
Hey, just watching as my hubby wants to head out there tomorrow. My daughter is 5 and is just learning her pedal bike. Would she be able to ride the green line with her balance bike?
Hi Jill, yes. The green trail should be do able on a balance bike and the features all have go-arounds. Although, I have not been there in a year so I have no idea if the maintenance has been kept up. Good luck and more importantly have fun! Sage
lol nice edits in the end
Thanks Serge
The real joke is you riding this rock with no knee guards or elbow guards.
lol, good call. So what brand pads do you wear?
This is one of the things that I love about mountain biking No age restriction to hang and have a great time. Will is looking MIGHTY impressive for someone who's only been riding for 6 months. That bike-body-separation and mobility seems like second nature to him already. 👌👏💪 Oh, and that move you did with the tree stump gap...DAYUM! smooth AF. Looking like a trials master. 👌
Yes!!! I love that too. Age is just a number right?!?! As for that tree stump pop, I surprised myself lol! I called on my inner Jeff Lenosky ;)
Do I need suspension? Do I need gears? No. Why? I have a rigid single speed.
Love it Shawn!!! Sage
I bought a Kona Unit late last year and I won’t look back now. Rigid SS is so fun. I’m mainly riding road atm to build up endurance and let my body get used to it. I’ll hit some off road stuff at some point this summer though.
That's so awesome! Are you running a dropper seat post on the rigid? If not, I would highly recommend one. It makes a huge difference when you don't have suspension to rely on. Sage
@@TrailSage I’m not actually. But I definitely will consider it. I keep hearing a lot of good things about them tbh.
@@ninjasrose1653 Def do. My buddy Dan and I recently did a podcast episode on single speeds you might find helpful. It's a "podcast" but I include plenty of supporting footage throughout so it's a fun watch/listen. Check it out here: czcams.com/video/8HxKnFUxtos/video.html

Holy crap Sage. My legs are on fire watching you do any of this on SS. Enjoyed the 3rd person shots and Dan's riding too. Such good tech, that you'll have to show me soon, just cant promise i'll get it all 😂
Man, this mountain has been calling your name Zane. Are you into skinnies? Regardless, I got plenty to show you when you make the trip. Now about those clipless pedals... ;)
@TrailSage I'm 50/50 on skinnies, they're fun but the risk to reward on your bike components is not there for me😂. The clipless.... they're coming soon🫣
