Longsword highlights - Swordmaster 3 and ŚKUNKS, may 2024
Footage comes from Historical Fencing tournaments at ,,Swordmaster 3" and ,,ŚKUNKS" events held may 2024. Enjoy :) Hope this serves as example of some longsword techniques in action and historical fencing footage somewhat pleasing to watch. At ŚKUNKS Ruleset was half-continuous: limb strikes didn't stop the fight, that's why some exchanges or distance may look weird. Last four exchanges are from my clubmates Maciej and Piotr.

At 1:04 and 1:08 who is the fighter on the left?
Ewa Kochanowska if I remember name correctly
O takie zapasy nic nie robiłem <3 cudowne
The SKUNKS ruleset sounds interesting !
Also, you had some great actions there, very nice to watch
@@frenchgalloglass5204 thank you! I fought in this ruleset two times, and ultimately don't like it. People ignore threatening to arms and no point limits is exhausting, both things make it also more prone to injuries. The atmosphere is great thou, and they like to experiment. If you have something in mind for workshop you could contact them and visit next year or somethin ;) I did messer workshop this year. You need to have in mind thou that the hall has some echo and participants are on very different levels.
LOL the last exchange was good, so who won?
I don't know xd
Very nice, thx. Could you explain the ruleset?
Thank you! Small point for limbs, doesnt stop fighting. Big point for torso and head, stops fighting. At the half time and end time every 3 small points are converted to one big. Only at that times fencers are informed about the score. There are no video challenges. Wrestling is allowed but without slams. Flat hits don't count. No flat hits and wrestling rules are rather standard in all Polish HEMA, however semi-continuous ruleset I have found very prone to exhaustion and injuries. And it facilitates much more ,,big-swingy-parry-riposte" like oldtimers like rather than Liechtenauer fencing.
@@Druid_Ignacy Thx for the response! But i cant say your opinion on the ruleset, it is good or bad? (Didnt understand your last paragraph, sorry)
@@MarioTwinden I didn't like it. It's prone to exhaustion and injuries, it's harder to judge fairly, it encourages ignoring right distance and getting hit on the arms.
That was lovely
I like this series of short clips :)
This is much easier for me than long episodes :)
Masz suba 😊 sam jestem wojem w stanie spoczynku... Po covidzie duzo wiary sie wykruszyło z wczesnego. Brakuję mi turniejów, szczególnie tych wygranych, ach ta satysfakcja... 😅 Pozdrawiam.
mutieren?
No, because I perform winden here with a long edge. According to PPvD mutieren from this side would be If I had performed winden with the short edge. You can see mutieren in action in my latest long hema in combat episode :)
@@Druid_Ignacy ahh indeed, thanks for pointing out
O mój Boże. To dosłownie szpadunia ❤
Nie współczesna teraz się uczy bez rotacji nadgarstka tego przeniesienia. Ale tak, Liechtenauer to szpada elo
Yes I think it is a nice vehler :)
These are some really great exchanges. I particularly love the duplieren at 2 min, it was done really fast. And the mutieren at the end was epic
Muszę sobie zapamiętywać że nagrywasz żeby się starać XD
Rzadko publikuję i tak
Nice
Amazing video. I like technique showcase on tournament footage.
Thank you :) Check other out, I have some more coming, just can't get time to edit them :c
More please!!
We can hardly find time for that now, but would we record more of this exercise-focused interpretation we will post it! :> Awesome you like it!

-Nie rób szermierki to jest wojna, ZAJEB GO
Weapon weight was 2,1 kg if you're curious
Very cool ! Some actions reminded me a bit of halfswording with the longsword, some others reminded me of poleaxe fighting, but overall it's quite a unique style
Yes, it was noticable! Thrust / buttstroke rules and weapon parameters made it unique, but in general it felt like spear fighting :)
Notes: 9:20 - these play and following zornhaw plays we ultimately consider an offensive plays, since these have own subtitle (zornhaw and not zorn ort as two defensive zorn plays), do not mention phrase ,,as before" like abnemen paragraph, and do not mention shooting the point from zorn (zorn-ort) while starting with phrase ,,as you strike him with zornhaw and he parries" - hence zum ochs winden as well as krieg above and below and drey wunder plays from zornhaw we ultimately consider offensive, that is starting with zornhaw as attack from own or at enemy zufechten. Zornhaw play will be revised in next video.
Notes: 1. To align offensive footwork better with PPvD, (right strike = right leg and vice versa) left oberhaw could be performed from left pflug, which contrary to left vom tag is described and often used, and does encourage enemy to attack right side of the body. 2. Source describes enemy parry as countertime, but since for countertime parry to be possible distance has to be similar as for parry from stance, and that source is unclear in later paragraphs in what situation enemy parries the blow we then redouble, we treat these plays as attacks on prep - that is at enemy zufechten; (which in combat may become counter attack), for simplyfying training proces. The reasoning for attacking at enemy zufechten not from own is that: attack on prep is the most suprising attack possible, which makes it good opportunity for such fancy redoublements as duplieren and mutieren.
Great series of drills, thanks for sharing ! I like how you started with exact plays from the sources and then later added your own follow-ups, and also how it increases in complexity (from easy-ish to more complicated sequences) I might take some inspiration from it :p
Feel free to use and share :) This is very WiP, We hope to put a single video in good quality and cool-edited one day, once we have all exercies recorded. For now all techniques in the video are straight from PPvD, though some from later paragraphs, but in fact, once project is finished, I'm going to mix up these techniques and exercises with each other and more colourful interpretation, more suitable for competition. Glad you like the project :>
@@Druid_Ignacy Yes, it's really good ! Usually on youtube we find sparring, or very basic beginner drills, it's rare to see footage of more advanced drills, or drills adapted directly directly from a paragraph of a source, it gives a perspective on how you are practicing, which is always interesting :) I think it's important to see how other clubs train
Interestingly they mostly use sportfencing footwork instead of passing steps. I wonder why?
Every part of used footwork can be named with according historical name, and ppl of the past were surely able to perform all of them, even thou it is believed that percentage of treten vs schreiten was different. For more information check Sprechfenster Blog video of footwork in Hs3227a.
Very nice
Thanks!
great analysis and great combat
That Uberlauffen shot to the person throwing the geisler was a thing of beauty.
Love it!
Wait for the episode 6, there will be some fancy stuff!
One of those techniques that makes you pump your fist and utter, "yes!"
Great idea and good presentation, thanks for sharing.
Thank you :) Follow the playlist, even more effective displays are coming :)
Красиво реализовали! 🧐
I'm sorry I don't understand ;) EDIT - I put it in translator, thank you! Glad you like it! I also suggest series ,,techniques in the wild" by Michel Rensen :)
@@Druid_Ignacy Beautifully implemented! 😉
Nah, sorry, the first one is definitely a Zwerchau, mechanics wise. It was a Zwerchau into a thrust. Which doesn't mean it is also not an Unterzwerch, of course. And no, whether the thumb is underneath or not doesn't define a Zwerchau. You can Zwerch with the thumb underneath or not.
Hmm, debatable... I'd say it definitely does not go through the "regular" trajectory of a zwerchau (any zwerchaus, really), but personally I wouldn't call it unterhau either, because it similarly does not look like that (no real cutting intention). If anything it is a feint attack and an upper absetzen in countertime, to counter the counterattack (crazy, huh!?), in my book 🤷♂
@@Angelimir There is no indication in the sources that a "hau" universally requires cutting intention. Mechanically, it was a Zwerch more than anything. Tactically it was definitely absetzen.
Yes, haw doesn't necessarily mean cut, see SprechfensterBlog on facebook on that topic. @@borislavkrustev8906 I know absetzen only as counter to thrust, that's why I didn't call it absetzen. I didn't call it ansetzen either, since right fencer attacked without left one starting any attack (ansetzen: ,,when he starts to cut or thrust, then shoot point at him"). But still, see that crossguard final position is accidental, triggered by landing oberhaw (it's easyli seen in slow mo).
@@borislavkrustev8906 mi point is actually that there was very little intention at all in the initial movement :D
@@Angelimir no, intention is good krumphaw (aaaa its a typo! OFC unterhaw!) ending in ochs position; I know personally this fencer and she does that often. Good technique made it possible for her to not get hit.
LOVE THIS! Please make more of these. It’s soo much easier to understand
I have lots of footage, also for rapier and sabre. I'll keep it coming!
