Registrace 8. 08. 2014
Gardening at 58 North is a CZcams gardening channel which focuses on house plants and gardening. The channel contains a series of horticultural videos, some are instructional and informative, whilst others are video diaries of how my plants are doing over the year. Please have a look through my videos, if you have any questions, leave a comment and I will try to answer your questions.
My outdoor videos are filmed in North Scotland between Inverness and Elgin, the USDA of my garden is around 8 and the USDA of my parents coastal garden is around 9. However as we are only 640 miles from the arctic circle, the summers are very cool with an average daily maximum temperature of 18C (65F) in July and grass frosts are possible any month of the year. Although July and August are nearly always frost free.

Growing Hardy Agave From Seed Update (2024)
In this video I have a look at two species of hardy Agave that I grew from seed last year. Agave montana and Agave atrovirens 'oaxaca jungle giant' both come from high altitude areas and are more frost and wet tolerant than most Agave species. In this video I have a close look at the differences between my young Agave atrovirens plants and also repot them. I also plant two of my Agave atrovirens plants in my Scottish garden to see if they can survive my cold wet winters.

In this video I show how a ZZ plant which appears completely dead can fully recover within a few months. ZZ plants (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) are extremely drought resistant and can survive for many months without water. However in order to survive they will kill off all their above ground growth to preserve what little water is left in their rhizomes. Once watered even a dead looking plant can q...
How To Deadhead Laburnum Trees
zhlédnutí 449Před 28 dny
In this video I explain how to remove the old flowers from Laburnum trees and why it is a good idea to do so. Laburnums are very beautiful trees which produce many thousands of flowers each spring, however once flowering is over the tree will focus all its energy into producing thousands of seeds. This draws a lot of energy away from the tree and both reduces its growth over the summer and redu...

Cfffftttfttttttttt
I thought I finally got the chive seeds to sprout, first time grower. It was like 11 days had passed and I seen something starting to come out of the soil and I praised myself thinking it was a chive sprout. 2 days later the leaves appeared and I looked it up online, it’s not chives. It’s parsley. I was transferring my little pots in a shoebox from one place to another and dropped the box, a lot of dirt was everywhere. I did my best and thought the chives were okay but I had to add some dirt back in. Obviously a couple parsley seeds were in there because now I have 2 going. I know they’re parsley because I have 2 pots of parsley sprouts growing. What a shame 🤦♂️

How is this jade doing nowadays? Did it recover well?
Thank you for the update. The babies look great ❤
Great video. So cool to see it come back to life. Thanks!
First
Strange. I've always treated as a WINTER plant as that's when the red bracts come. In QLD Australia mine are in my garden 5feet tall.. Beautiful. I've taken and achieved multiple cutting Now tall and fabulous I wish I could send pics 🌹
Nice to see these growing well in Scotland. I am down in Falkirk and just picked up 2 musa basjoo yesterday. Great looking plants you have.
Qué es eso😊
What feed do you use please
Thanks for a GREAT tutorial! I’m so happy I can prune my leggy poinsettia. I’m going to try to grow the pruned pieces.
My son got a basil plant from a girlfriend. He named it Ferguson. Well, Ferguson got sick and he was able to get some starts off it (I have one of them and the original.) Im tryijg to revive it. The stems are getting shrivelled. Am i not watering it enough? Is it not getting enough sun? It's in a south-facing window.
Should you put plant food in the water while they're propagating or just plain water
Thanks for the great. Idea! I brought a little cutting back from vacation. I put it in water to root. A few weeks later the top of the stem was covered in tiny black bugs. I don’t know where they came from. I rinsed the bugs off but in another week they were back. I rinsed them off and put some insect dust on them. I would like to have it as a house plant. Does this plant attract bugs? Thank you for any advice you can give me!
Mine died completely and all leaves and stems dried up. Will it recover inside if I cut the brown dead stalks?
which indoor lights you using for the plant growth?
Awesome. Please help where I can buy the seeds. A site link would also help...
Nice ❤
Every time I try infinite basil all I end up with is a jar of dead basil leafs
Wow!!!!! This is so helpful! Thank you 🙏
I grow them in the Palm Springs desert and they are massive. About to try a second round this year. It’s 115 daily now. We’ll see as sunlight is getting shorter. Thanks for all your info.
Hello Sir, i have watched all your videos on the moso plants. I plan to start a plantation on my own from seed and got some Phyllostachis edulis seeds online from a bamboo professional. The seeds come from China. The seedlings look like your own but how can i be sure those really are moso plants ? How fast did you see phyllostachys edulis characteristics on your young plants ?
Well done for getting the seeds to germinate, the germination rate of bamboo seeds is very low, even once germinated you often loose a third of the plants when they have three leaves. You probably have moso, as moso flowers randomly around the world, so there is often fresh seed available. Keep an eye out for stiff hairs just under each leaf, that is good indication its moso, you should see them after a few months when the plant has around 5 leaves. You won't notice the fine hairs on the culm until a year or two old.
@Gardeningat58N I understand. Highly appreciate your fast response time. Thank you very much !
@@dragosd8992 Good luck with your Moso plantation, they are a little slow to get going, but after a few years they will grow very quickly.
Use a sawzalll. Save your back
Well done that's impressive
Thanks, it was worth the wait for the flowers, hopefully I'll have some more flower spikes next summer.
@@Gardeningat58N fingers crossed 🤞
Thanks for the update video
thank you this much helped.🙏🏼🙌🏼
Thanks, I'm glad my video was helpful :)
Very nice tour! Would also love to see what's happening in your conservatory, miss seeing the plants you had there, like the Plumeria, the ficus, etc.
I've been struggling with those plants for the last few years, with the high gas prices I've not been able to keep the conservatory warm enough in the winter. I keep it frost free, but it's too cold for most of my plants. I think the plumeria may have died this year as its still not rerouted since loosing its leaves over winter, the ficus is alive, but it looses most of its leaves over winter then slowly recovers over summer. I'm hoping in the future to get a cheaper heating system fitted, or more insulation. I used to keep my more tropical houseplants in the house to keep them warm, but my 2 year old would destroy them so unfortunately most have to now go in the cold conservatory, when he's a bit older I'll get more houseplants again.
@@Gardeningat58N Ah, I see! Yes, I can understand the heating issue, unfortunately! Hopefully you'll be able to rebuild your tropical house plant collection, it was always very nice when you were showcasing them on the channel
Just incredible. Thanks for all the information and showing us all your banana plants. Subscribed. 👍
Welcome to my channel :) I'll be filming another tropical garden tour in early autumn.
@@Gardeningat58N Thanks, I will look forward to it.
Loved this video! So interesting to see various varieties of flowering plants, so carefully tended to, with experience and attention. Especially love that there's some flowering weeds for the pollinators too. It's a lovely garden, delightful to see, so well done. Thank you for sharing this with us! 🥰
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my video, I always try to have it as full as flowers as possible whilst adding in some unusual or tropical plants.
Thank you for your post.
Hi! I’ve wanted to get my hands on Moso Bamboo for such a long time but can’t get the seeds to sprout and all the suppliers always run out of stock.. Would you be interested in shipping a plant to Sweden in exchange for a fee? Best regards, Olav
Growing from seed is difficult as the seed doesn't stay viable for long and so has to be fresh to germinate well. Unfortunately I can't post any plants as the UK has very strict laws on the selling and shipping of plants.
@@Gardeningat58N I see, then the hunt for viable seeds continues! Thanks anyways.
@@mrorganic2682 Good luck, hopefully you'll get lucky. Keep an eye out on the website: rareplamseeds, they sometimes sell moso seeds. The other seeds I've bought from them have been reliable.
Thanks for video. I can not get my plans red , trying for couple of years and no luck 😢
I find its better to use an unglazed clay pot with a drainage hole. These plants don't like wet feet.
I had this happen to me today, no rot though, just one of my 2 trunks broke off like yours, and a bunch of leaves fell off too, so I don’t know why! The other trunk looks healthy for now, so I’m hoping I can save it
I'm sorry I'm new to planting do I put just compost soil in the pot or should I mix it with something else ?
Very helpful Can’t produce flowers I will try this Thank you so much Patricia
I really enjoyed the ending watching the plant 🌱 grow I fast time it was interesting to see how the plants curl 👍🏼 Thanks so much 😊
are this type just indoor bonsai ? or live out door ?
You will provide seeds or tree ?
GIVE ME THE PLANT.🌱🪴
That one crawl in your camera😂
I bought from Himalayan. Gardens. Plant was tiny. But it’s alive. , worried about slug damage kept it in the green hours so far
were they watered from t he time they were planted till the end? If they are not being watered what is the point of using perlite or any media that provides better drainage?
Can you put seeds in pond
