  • In this video I show how yellow rattle suppresses the growth of grasses allowing wild flowers to thrive. Yellow rattle (Rhinanthus minor) is a hemiparasitic plant which gets most of its nutrients and sugars by stealing them from grasses.

This is great! I have a problem with invasive grasses, I also have some seeds for a local native plant called purple owls clover, which is similarly parasitic on grass. I’ve gotta get that planted soon!

Both those plants should make a big difference to the grasses and weaken them substantially.

Your welcome, yellow rattle does a great job at helping wild flowers to succeed in a grassy flower meadow.

Does the yellow rattle feed of other wild flower as well? 🤔

Yes, but only vetch, which can also be very aggressive and take over like grasses do. So it will weaken grasses and vetch leaving space for the other wild flowers to thrive.

Are you cutting the grass at all ?

Yes, once a year around November or December. You have to wait until late in the year to make sure all the seeds have dropped from the wild flowers. I cut it very short to make sure the old dead grass doesn't shade out the wild flowers and spring bulbs.
