    Oh, it warms my heart to see Accesscode Talker's popup with a clean eight-nine cent or two dollar price. That's the numbers I like to see on generic extra deck boss monsters (if they MUST exist). 11:02 Wow, that was funny to see. I didn't realize the packs could just have duplicate cards in different rarities like that. Well, at least Hope Harbinger is a cool card!

      @CommodoreCards Před 19 dny

      Absolutely, it's great to see these cards finally down at more affordable prices. Even for some of the really shiny versions. I'd much rather see a box's value spread out over most of the packs like this instead of all concentrated in a single $100 card.

  • @StarkMaximum
    @StarkMaximum Před 20 dny

    11:28 pointing at the screen, that's me, Gary! I said that! I made his videos just a little bit better! it is endlessly funny to me how Digimon prices and your awareness of the market work, such that your biggest pull is the promo you discarded almost immediately and instead you're getting hype over 5 dollar alt arts. Raremon is such an odd case because it's only distributed via these promo packs in this one set, so it's hard as hell to get, and it does the thing purple decks absolutely love to do, which is draw deep and discard fast, while also giving black access to it. Any black level 3 can pay 3 to evolve into this gloppy bastard and escalate your plans. So a ton of purple and black decks want it just to smooth out their hand but so few people have ready access to it, so high demand low supply, bingo bango 40 dollar card. Also I believe that when you're pronouncing a Chinese name like Zhuqiaomon, the "qi" is pronounced like "chi", so it's closer to "zhoo chi-ow mon" or "zhoo chow mon". And finally, Dianamon's red/fire/sun counterpart is Apollomon, who I think you even pulled in this box and have certainly pulled in the past. Seems like a really good box you got! I always love seeing you crack Digimon packs.

    • @CommodoreCards
      @CommodoreCards Před 20 dny

      Hah, yes that bit of trivia was indeed from you! I guess that's the beauty of not recording these super far ahead of time like I do with my Let's Plays. Yeah, it does surprise me sometimes how valuable the promos can be. I just never expect them to be half the price of the box! To me though, it's not always about how much the cards are worth, but rather how much of a pain it will be to track them down if I don't open them myself. I know full well that MetalEtemon isn't worth much, but that doesn't matter if stores simply don't have it! Having said that, even without my $5 chase card, this was pretty much the best box of this set I could have asked for. I've been on a bit of a roll lately with Digimon!

      @@CommodoreCards I hope you see you build an Etemon deck and post a deck profile for it with how much you've been talking up Etemon every time you pull him! I mean hell there are some pretty solid Sukamon/Etemon lists you could look out there for inspiration. Also, I forgot to investigate this because I was at work when I watched this, but I was curious myself so I did do a search for level 6s sorted by attack. 14k _is_ the highest we've had for a level 6, but TyrantKabuterimon is not unique in having it. BT11 Galacticmon, BT13 Belphemon Rage Mode, and BT15 Leviamon X Antibody all match Tyrant at 14k DP. Just as a fun comparison point, the lowest DP on a (non-token, sorry Diaboromon) level 6 is BT1's SlashAngemon at 8k, but he does give -8k DP on evolving, so you could argue it's _kind of_ a 16k attacker.

    • @CommodoreCards
      @CommodoreCards Před měsícem

      Yeah, that is actually something that bugs me (heh) a little. I wish they'd experiment a bit more with lower-power megas. I get it, people want their top-end Digimon to be big. But it seems like we rarely see anything below 12000 at this point. Like BanchoStingmon from BT3, I love that card! So cool.

    • @StarkMaximum
      @StarkMaximum Před měsícem

      @@CommodoreCards I think the issue with low-power Megas is that even if they have really good, interesting effects, once you attack and use them, you're just a low-attack Digimon sitting out there waiting to be attacked into, and then all your work setting up that stack is gone. So if they did want to make a low-attack, high-impact via effect Mega, it'd probably have to be overloaded with defensive abilities too to ensure it doesn't just get hit and killed.

    • @CommodoreCards
      @CommodoreCards Před měsícem

      @@StarkMaximum True, but can't you build around that? Use blockers? Inherit Retaliate into it in some cases? I dunno, again, I don't play the game. @@CommodoreCards Yeah, that's true, it's not an impossibility, but it's one of those things where it's like you're putting in more work to get the same thing a lot of other decks do for free. But that is what makes TCGs fun, is finding weird ways to do things!

  • @StarkMaximum
    @StarkMaximum Před měsícem

    Wow, that was quite a good box! I know Shadowhaunt may have gotten both Secrets with an alt-art Magna X (which is, what, over a hundred dollars rn?), but an alt-art Paildramon and a regular Magna X is certainly nothing to sneeze at! I'd say you're both winners, honestly. And with the two Paildramon, the Imperialdramons ,and Davis/Ken Tamers you pulled, you are already well on your way to building Imperialdramon, which is poised to be a very strong contender in the upcoming meta! I do like what they did with the Veemon and Wormmons where you pointed out that they evolve from totally different colors; that's both so that you only need one Digitama (both of them have a special trait to evolve off of their respective lesser form and their colored evolution requirements lets them evolve off of the other one, for example Veemon evolves off DemiVeemon but evolving off of green allows him to evolve off of Minomon as well), and it allows you to consistently change up how you evolve up the line to give you more versatility. It's okay if you draw just Veemon alongside Stingmon because Veemon can evolve into Stingmon just fine! Probably the most pedantic thing I'll bring up, but you mention "ah, I remember that episode" upon seeing the art for Advent of the Ancient Steel Angel, but I don't think you do! That specific scene comes from the second Japanese ending, and I don't know if that specific frame ever appeared in the English broadcast of the show! All of the DNA/Jogress Option cards use frames from that ED, which I find very charming. Where else am I gonna spread my "just recently watched the sub" trivia to a dub-only watcher? I'm very excited to build Insectoids from this set, so I'm gonna need to get some of those TyrantKabuterimon myself. Luckily they're only about 10 bucks each atm. I know you casually discarded it because it's not a "main character Digimon", which is usually a fair assumption, but don't be so sure _this_ time! TyrantKabuterimon is a _key_ player in the Insectoid deck and is their best top-end, being run as a consistent four-of while most other level 6s are just run as two-of to supplement it. Like Paildramon, it's projected to do very well going into the next format because it can brute force Magnamon X out of the way! Very excited to play Big Beetles.

      Hah, honestly, the card I'm probably most interested in looking back is that Yellow/Black Chaosmon. Is this secretly Etemon support??? That's big news. I was pleasantly surprised to see TyrantKabuterimon being kind of valuable. Good! I'm glad to see some bugs getting love.

    Oh yeah, I did have another point I wanted to bring up. GraceNovamon does certainly have a novel of an effect, but I want to compare Digimon cards to Yu-Gi-Oh for a minute (I know, a shockingly fresh discussion about how many words Yu-Gi-Oh cards have). A Yu-Gi-Oh effect novel is a hard brick of text, with no line breaks, no bullet points, no numbers. It's just this long sequence of sentences you have to parse with weird awkward punctuation ("When you summon this, discard a card, and if you do, you can, once per turn, if you control a Spellcaster..."). In a Digimon effect novel, each individual effect is on one line, and it starts with how you activate it and/or when it's applied. I can see, at a glance, that GraceNova has two relevant keywords (Security +1, Blocker), an effect when it digivolves and attacks (and I know that's one effect for both), and an effect that applies on either player's turn (so if I'm facing this Digimon, I know to watch out for the All Turns effect when I go to remove it). It hits hard, it blocks, it trashes sources, and you can trash its own sources to protect it. Yes, you can describe a Yu-Gi-Oh card this way, but it takes a lot more reading to get to that point and you can still easily miss a word or two that changes the entire effect. Also, yeah, there's a Leomon deck in this set. It's a branch evolution from the Rookie, that goes down a green/yellow path with Liollmon to Lia Loader to Bancho and a green/black path with Elecmon to Leomon to GrapLeo to Heavy. I think you pulled every point in the lines. It seems like a fun deck, but it's more of a casual thing than anything relevant and you might need to fill out the deck with a few unrelated Digimon (BT14 Palmon is basically always good in green). I whipped up a decklist for it but I haven't tested it yet, I just think HeavyLeomon in particular kicks ass.

    • @CommodoreCards
      @CommodoreCards Před 2 měsíci

Maybe some Droll and Lock Birds or extra backrow removal if necessary. One thing that really stops this deck is Nibiru, so a single Nibiru of your own and some Crossout Designators might not be a bad idea. Honestly you could get away with a whole package of random disruption cards and some Crossout Designators. That's probably what I'd do.

    So here's a fun little trivia bit: this set has a Digimon World Dawn/Dusk subtheme (Digimon Story Sunburst/Moonlight in Japan). Coronamon and Lunamon are the two face Digimon for both games, which makes it really fun that two times, you pulled a Coronamon with a Lunamon right behind it. But what I didn't notice until just now looking it up, those two Tamer cards associated with those archetypes both depict the same two characters; one is "Sayo and Koh", the other is "Koh and Sayo". Koh is the canon protagonist of Dawn and Sayo is the canon protagonist of Dusk, but in both games you get to pick what gender character you want, so their respective cards also depict the Dawn version of Sayo and the Dusk version of Koh! Isn't that cool?

  • @StarkMaximum
    @StarkMaximum Před 3 měsíci

    Ayy, I actually have this one. I bought it because 30 dollars for a deck that was basically done sounded like a great deal, except that I accidentally found what was apparently a _recommended_ decklist on the official website rather than the actual contents of the deck, a recommended decklist that assumed you have access to a playset of every card in the box. Thankfully, the deck is still MOSTLY playsets, but as you can see some of the most important cards are stuck at two. That said, people are quick to say "buy two copies so you can make the full deck" but that seems wildly ineffecient when you can get the missing playsets for like 15 bucks on TCGPlayer. I'm a little mixed on the Advanced Deck branding. It's not really that the deck itself is much better than your average deck; for example, the recent WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon decks also include mostly playsets but keep the cover card line at 2. But it does feel like every card in this deck does push towards a single game plan while your average 10 dollar deck does contain a little bit of filler and doesn't have the simple and effective "four consistency Options, two removal Options" that I've been working with. What makes this deck expensive is All The Other Bullshit that's crammed into the box to make it really big. It's got all those promos and reprints, it's got the pack that has an alternate frame of a random card in the deck, and it comes with a pack of sleeves, which you didn't show! The sleeves are very cute but they are BY FAR the most useless thing to put in a starter deck. You're not saving any money, because a pack of sleeves will probably run you 10 bucks anyway, and if you're gonna sleeve you probably have a favorite brand (and it's probably Dragon Shields). I don't know how well made these official sleeves are, but why even risk it? Just lower the price, give me the cards, and I'll sleeve them myself. I've got tons! That said, it's a great and fun deck. I invested in the EX4 BlackGargo/Rapid/MegaGargo line, who also have Alliance, to lean in more to the Alliance theme in the deck, but you can also take the deck in more of an Antylamon/Cherubimon direction, which is also Alliance focused, but I guess gets you access to some different colors or some other options? I mean it's basically the same deck with a different guy because MegaGargoAce is so good you probably still want to play him, but either way it's more options to customize your deck, which I think is nice. So nothing in this box except the alt frame pack is variance. The deck always comes with those full art reprints, and it always comes with two new Magnamons. This deck is the only way to get those Magnamon. That's one of the things they use to advertise this deck. I don't know why they put Magnamon as an added bonus in this deck. I don't know why they gave you two, other than to allow you to have a full playset by buying two rather than making you buy *four* (which would be atrocious), but those alt art reprints are only one per package, so I don't know what the idea is there. I don't know how that Magnamon was released in Japan, I don't know if maybe it's a stray promo or something they needed to find a way to distribute in America, but yeah, you're not missing anything. The deck just has two Magnamon that does not get used in the deck but has the same number code as the deck. It's just a new Magnamon to collect, maybe throw it in Armor Rush or build a Veemon-themed deck or something! But that's all there is to it.

      This comment was literally invisible to me until I "sorted by most recent." Very odd. But yeah, when I was putting these cards away in my binder I realized that the Magnamon was numbered as part of the deck but definitely would make zero sense as part of it! It must have been a promo of some sort in Japan. And I DID, in fact, show off the sleeves. They were one of the first things I took a look at! They are very cute.

    Eiji Nagasumi and Satsuki Tamahime are both from a digital light novel called Digimon Seekers, and the reason why they clash against the usual Digimon art style is probably because they're grown adults (well, Eiji is 19) rather than kids. Seekers has a bit more of an edge to it than most Digimon media, with the DigiPolice dealing with cyber crime and hacker collectives, including the group Eiji is associated with, the Sons of Chaos. Loogamon is Eiji's partner and you somehow managed to pull every member of Loogamon's line except Loogamon himself! Satsuki's partner is that DigiPolice Numemon you pulled, which is extra funny that one pack had Numemon and Satsuki together. I've been reading Seekers myself lately, I'm nowhere near in deep enough to pass judgment on it but I'm _really_ interested in the premise!

    The more I think about and learn about TCGs, the more I realize Duel Masters really had something with the shield system and general gameplay, and the more I play Digimon, the more I realize it's really the Duel Masters 2 I've been wanting. Almost every card does something coming out of security, even if it's just a Digimon trying to strike back at an attacker, but most Options and Tamers tend to get full or increased value out of being checked. Card flow is really good because so many cards search the topdeck and evolving draws you a card, and the resource system is really engaging and gets around the annoying "I have to put cards I would've played out of the game to generate resources" problem all "use cards as established resources" games have.

    • @CommodoreCards
      @CommodoreCards Před 3 měsíci

      For sure, there's so much about Digimon's design as a game that I love. The memory mechanic itself is something that really caught my attention, it's such a cool idea. I do like how mana is handled in Duel Masters as well, though. Turning any card in your hand into a "land" is a neat way to do it, although I could see why some people might not like it. Makes me think of Magic's flip lands, which I make heavy use of.

    • @StarkMaximum
      @StarkMaximum Před 3 měsíci

      @@CommodoreCards I think both "you put resource cards in your deck" and "you put cards in your hand as a resource" methods are pretty equally acceptable. A lot of people seem to think hand resource beats deck resource easily but I think they both come with their own problems. People are so quick to say "well with using any card as a resource you never brick or flood", but then you sit them down and give them a hand full of cards they want to play, and suddenly they wish one of those cards just said "this is +1 resource and nothing else". What really fucks me up is that Lorcana has hand resource, but because of the fact that some cards can be inked and some can't, some people recommend you put cards in your deck solely to be inked...meaning they just changed Lorcana to deck resource! They just put lands in Lorcana! What are you guys DOING!? Anyway, memory i think is truly, genuinely fascinating, seems to play super well (I'm only just getting into the game for real now, I haven't actually played much yet, just watched people play), and is by far the first time I have ever looked at a TCG resource system and thought "hmm...this might be the one to watch. This could actually beat both of the main previous ways we've been doing it". And I think that's extremely impressive.

    The ratios for your deck are somewhat poor and cause anti-synergy (e.g. heavy forward at 2 in a pro infinitrack strategy, urgent schedule not at 3 in a blind 2nd deck). I personally lean heavier into the machina side of the deck, as it raises the combo potential significantly with ruinforce/earthslicer and Qliphort Genius. Genius also combos well with urgent schedule and can disable faceup cards.) People also run a single irradiator to fix dead hands caused by unclaspare. Of course, this doesn't affect your skill as a player. Deckbuilding can be complex. And at the end of the day, it's your deck and you make your own choices so take my criticism with a grain of salt. On another note, maindecking droplets are perfectly fine, since they can be used to counter droll & lock bird when going second. Most people don't know that. But adding a card through card effect let's you use droplets on resolution and by sending a monster, your opponent can't chain droll because as turn player, you have priority. Droll stops your turn, so knowing this trick is invaluable.

    • @CommodoreCards
      @CommodoreCards Před 3 měsíci

      I've actually found that having 3 Heavy Forwards or Urgent Schedules is too much, 2 is perfect. You never want more than one, and this deck is full of so many things you CAN do that you never need to rely on a single strategy. At least you can discard a redundant copy of Machina Redeployment to another Machina Redeployment's cost, so 3 of those is fine. Of course, having multiple strategies could also just be chalked up to my personal playstyle. Someone could certainly lean into one or the other more heavily if they wanted. Qliphort Genius sounds good in theory, but in practice I found that it absolutely never works with Urgent Schedule that way I would wish it would. Nobody lets you get that far, and if your Urgent Schedule is resolving anyway it's already a "win more" scenario in your favor. If you start with Urgent Schedule and your opponent lets it resolve, they're probably already done for. That's an interesting tidbit about Forbidden Droplet, I'll need to keep that in mind. Not that Droll shows up too often in Master Duel where I play most of the time, but it's cool that you can play around it that way.

      @@CommodoreCards You're correct about Genius. I mainly use genius because I run Ruinforce and I always go into the ruinforce line if possible. The ruinforce line is summon genius turn 1, summon earth slicer and ruinforce. Use Earth slicer to blow up both earth slicer and ruinforce on the field. Then trigger the effect of ruinforce and citadel. To revive citadel and two banished machina monsters, the two monsters being gearframe and unclaspare into the link arrows of genius. That lets you search a train with the 2nd effect of genius which ends on dora, sargas and regulus. But you probably knew that combo.

    You're missing a comma in Apocalymon's effect. When you would play this, comma, by putting Dark Masters underneath it you can reduce the cost by 4 for each. It encourages you to hard play him from hand rather than digivolving up to him. I'm glad you did pull the Apocalymon just to answer your question about whether or not there was a "Dark Masters" deck and why you'd want to shuffle through so many of them. All four Dark Masters are in this set and they all have that cycle effect, and each Dark Master gets a "lieutenant" Digimon that all have the same effects in different colors; look for level 6s on play and delete a Digimon to place a Dark Master in your breeding area end of turn. You opened a few of them but didn't check them; MetalSeadramon got Scorpiomon (aka Anomalocarimon), Puppetmon got Cherrymon, Machinedramon got Gigadramon, and Piedmon got Ladydevimon, with Vilemon being additional support in the form of protection. Then you can absorb them all in the trash with Apocalymon and play him for cheap with a bunch of useful effects (because all of the Dark Masters have solid inheritables to give him) and win the game off of that. The funny thing is, Apocalymon is really cheap for a secret, because he was pre-restricted before the set came out. Apparently the JP meta was run roughshod by Apocalymon and EN just decided "nah, we're gonna bite the bullet and deal with this now" and limited not just an unreleased card, but a _secret rare_ at that, which are supposed to be the money makers. I saw some videos from around that time theorizing that Apocalymon needed to be hit but assuming they couldn't hit Apocalymon _itself_ due to being a secret, and trying to figure out what else to hit around it, but seems like Bandai EN went for the unexpected straight punch. Sooooo all this talk about the Dark Masters deck and it honestly doesn't even work because your boss monster is stuck at 1, and the whole deck was designed around him.

    • @CommodoreCards

      Yeah, I noticed the comma in editing and now I look like a fool. If I ever open another one, I'll need to address that and salvage what dignity I have left! I do stand by what I said though; Digimon abilities are worded in very clunky ways sometimes. But that's coming from someone who's used to the very clear-cut "Cost: Effect" of Magic cards. It's crazy that they'd just limit it right out of the gate like that. I heard that Digimon has a real power-creep problem, but that seems excessive!

    • @StarkMaximum
      @StarkMaximum Před 3 měsíci

      @@CommodoreCards Digimon certainly has some weird wording. One card that really threw me off is one that says something like "Look at the top X cards, take a [color] Digimon _and one such Tamer_ and add them to your hand". Like, "and one such"? Why can't you just say "add one [color] Digimon and Tamer to your hand", or "one [color] Digimon and one [color] Tamer to your hand" if you're worried that might be read as "one [color] Digimon and any Tamer"? It just seems weird. I only recently got into the game so it's hard for me to talk about power creep, but I can certainly tell which cards came out in the first four or so sets and which came out in the last four or so. Plus a video I found that suggests deck building techniques for newcomers said "find a Digimon you like, find their most recent printing at an above Rare rarity, and build out from there". Like the general assumption that a newer card will be inherently better did stick out to me.
