In Finland We Have This Thing Called...Lohikäärme
The Finnish language is filled with these funny and strange words. A good enough reason to get your groove on and open your books. Or get an account for DuoLingo. An equally valid theory to the one stating Finland doesn’t actually exist is that dragons were actually dinosaurs. We are still waiting for this one to be settled.
Dragons were able to breathe fire, which could come in handy on those long cold winter nights. Too bad the closest mythology to have fire breathing dragons in them is the Icelandic. And they already have the geothermal pools. What else do they need, winners of Eurovision Song Contest and a great Ice-hockey team?
Another cool animal name, that was made up by Mikael Agricola in the 16th century is jalopeura, which is a word for lion, but means “noble deer”
Phew, I’m getting tired of all this linguistics, maybe I just should take a rest and sit down on a nearby bench, or as we call it, joukkoistuin “group seat”

I know many of you have been waiting for this like a rising moon (kuin kuuta nousevaa) The full moon is in about a week, just FYI. And some have expressed a bit of frustration towards us for not putting this out sooner. In case you want to know, we had some issues with the editing process, but it is sorted now =) The etymology of this word is quite fascinating. It stems back to Perkwunos which ...

Most Finns have at some point in their life gotten drunk on this legendary type of alcohol. Or at least tried it. Maybe liked it, probably not. It’s one of those things you as a foreigner definitely will be expected to consume, if someone brings out a jug (or two) of it. Now, it is not the worst tasting, or most dangerous home made booze we Finns make. We also have these things called sahti and...

One of the most fun sports we played in school was always Finnish baseball, or boboll as we called it in my neck of the woods. It was a clear sign of spring, which meant that summer vacation was just around the corner. Playing pesäpallo was also unique in the way that it was one of the few sports girls and boys played together. In addition to the three step power move, you can also fake a bat o...

It’s been surprisingly warm in Finland for surprisingly many days. Even though many think it’s awesome, it puts stress on some people and animals, especially since our houses are built to hold heat IN. Air-conditioning is a thing we mostly see in movies… The best thing to say to a Finn complaining over the heat is “Remember this feeling in about 3-4 weeks (tops) when it turns slushy and cold ag...

After realising yesterday that we forgot to write and shoot an episode for midsummer “Juhannus” we had to improvise and head on outside for a nearly impromptu shoot. We definitely did not want to miss out on the opportunity to tell you about the most longed after holiday of the year… Actually, even considering the tricky soundscape, this one turned out pretty good, wouldn’t you say? Nuff said, ...

Today, Sunday, is the day that a lot of people suffer from krapula, a hangover, after being out partying for one or several days. Many people also suffer from a morkkis, a “moralic hangover” due to things they have done, while being intoxicated. Me on the other hand, rarely suffer from any krapula, but today I have a huge morkkis. Actually I have had this morkkis for a while, as we haven’t post...

TODAY marks the 1 year anniversary of these videos! YEI!! =) When we started making these videos a year ago, we could never anticipate the reactions and input from all you across the world. This is our 43rd video and we are just so pleased on how these turn out and how you react to them. Normally, Vappu is the “official” beginning of summer. People go out, or have traditions in their family/fri...

Have you tried nyhtökaura? What is your favourite meat alternative? During these strange times it’s good for all of us to eat healthy, right? Without the need to sacrifice taste, you say? How is that possible? Well, nyhtökaura to the rescue. This is one of those things we Finns are really proud of, especially when we see it in a foreign supermarket or convenience store. Now if we Finns only wou...

Tuppi literally means sheath, case or scabbard. But today we are not literal, as you can see stated in this video. Nevertheless, being silent and introspective is a high valued feat in this area of the world. There are countless examples of this in interviews of athletes, too many to even start listing. Mostly expressed with a deep rallienglanti-accent or pure Finnish. One of my favourites is w...

First things first. Since the 1600’s when Sweden’s impact on Finland grew, peninkulma has become to mean a “mil” (10km) Some people still use “skogsmil” (forest mile) or “rest” to mean 5km as that is about the distance a person can walk in the forest without breaks. Kinda reminds me of the measure “poronkusema” that we talked about in a previous video. The exact spelling of peninkulma varies a ...

Many countries have their own ancient stories of gods, creation, people and nature, so Kalevala is not unique in that sense. It is unique though in the way how it was written, or rather composed. Imagine this one guy pretty much single-handedly capturing all the local stories by traveling around, from town to town, listening to old people’s babblings. Taking the time to meticulously edit togeth...

We Finns are a proud people. And for good reason. For centuries we have fought off all kinds of invaders, from near and far, from east and west. Armies with hundredfold the amount of soldiers have not been a threat to us in the past. Our beautiful country has plenty of natural resources; forest, ore, fresh water and blueberries, only to name a few. So it is understandable that other nations wan...

Drop-free January or as we call it “Tipaton Tammikuu” is a Finnish tradition. Every year thousands of Finns promise not to drink any alcohol during the month of January. Most people do this with varied success. In a country where alcohol consumption is very high, people travel far and wide to look for great deals, largely due to heavy legislation and taxation. While this is understandable, it i...

It is interesting to see throughout the years how dances and dance culture has changed. Sorry, but the _Rallienglanti_ should be the default English pronunciation. It would make our non-native life far easier. Thank you, Finnland.
considering the crazy regional dialects that exist across Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England, not to mention in the former colonies of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, this didn't actually come across as difficult to understand at all. What really threw me for a loop was seeing the Finnish spelling
Wait till you see Finglish. It's kinda hard to sometimes figure out what is being said because of its origins in the 20th century or w/e due to post-war immigrants etc
Skünet 🤣

This video is really bad with facts, firstly brewing when done right is safer than cooking when it comes to food safety, going blind from home made alcohol has nothing to do with brewing thats a product of a failed distillation thirdly making a brew in a bucket is a brain dead way to brew anyone can buy or make an airlock for like half a euro or less along with buying a proper brewing container.
I know I'm late to the party, but I speak ENGLish because I'm from ENGLand .... I love Rallienglati - it's a great gift to the English language from Finland :)
So sad this channel seems dead :(

Hieno hattu.
I wondered why I kept doing that until 23andme said I am 100% Finnish!
Au Québec, nous nous faisons arrêter par la police pour ça ! Vive la Finlande ! ah ah ah !
I understood that perfectly. Just sounds like the hydraulic press guy
Hello and welcome to the hydraulic press channel

In Holland we have Steenkoolengels (Hiilienglanti) which has its origin in the mining industry. But now used to describe the English you might hear in sports interviews (where the poor sportsman is forced to talk english by the sponsor) and in lectures by Dutch professors talking to a class of international students.
i like your channel
Returned home from a fishing trip in finland... I'm still watching the stupid wooden mug I bought and I don't even know what to drink from it... coffee.. it will certainly stain it, water ? to small, beer ? to small, strong alcohol ? not adequate, camping ? there are stainless steel mugs much lighter and with multiple functions why did I bought it ?
Stain it with some strong alcohol a few times. Let it sit and draw in the good flavours. Then drink coffee from it, or tea, or more alcohol... ;-)
Funny how "Impostor syndrome" got translated to "Huijarisyndrooma" and back to "Cheater syndrome" 🤣 Wonder if we can do that with "Kalakukko" -> "Fish cock" -> ????
Yeah desperate people doing desperate things. If you can't grow fruits up in the north then this shit happens 😂
That's weird. I can buy any alcohol in Hungary and don't have to travel for it.😂
Funny that a Turkish person would like to live in Finland 😂 as Santa claus 😂 but nice marketing from the finish people 😂
It's the first word I learned in Finland 😂
This is no longer in fashion... Today it should be mandatory to speak Afro-Asiatic, because this backward language is intended to populate the so-called third country nationals Tämä ei ole enään muodissa... Nykyään pitäisi olla pakollisena afroaasia kieli, koska tämä takahikiä on tarkoitus kansoittaa ns. kolmannen maan kansalaisista
Why aren't you making any more videos😢😢😢 Perkele!
in Denmark we have something simular - its just called skt hans where we make bonfires. With witches :D
That's sad lmao.
I'm from Estonia and pesäpallo (or as we call it, pesapall) is actually a very common activity in our schools' physical education classes In fact, I was very surprised when I first learned about American baseball and found out it was more known
Here's the thing, it's not called American baseball. It's just baseball
Baseball is famous in the US (obviously), Canada, Latin America, Greater Antilles, Southeast Asia, etc.
I wanted to ask, do you have a way of watching Pesapallo matches there in Estonia? I can't really find a way to watch it here in America, and there certainly isn't any English commentary. I did find the streaming service Ruutu, but that requires a Finnish Bank Account and Telephone to register, both of which are beyond my reach.
@@EM-ic1ypit’s bigger in east Asia than Southeast Asia. Japan Korea and Taiwan are in east Asia

It’s amazing hearing your english accent then suddenly shifting it to rallienglanti! haha you’re amazing. By the way I’ve been in finland in 6 months now and I am loving it. 😇❤️
something Brazil, Poland and Finland all have in common I see
oh, and the Philippines
who’s still watching ?

My childhood dentist was Finnish (incidentally, often referred to as "Dr. P") and she could no doubt be referred to as "Dr. Perkele". If you were bad she'd tie you down to the chair. She was also not great at what she did.
Salmon snakes are yummy
A pure sugar wash is illegal but if you add a slice of apple it becomes a fruit wine and that's legal.
Maybe in your country. In mine I can brew whatever I want at home and it's legal.
We were on the side of nazis back in the WW2. IF nazis would have won against Soviet union then we Finns would have been doing same kind of genocide and nazi crimes through Soviet union. Also let's not forget that Finns also executed POW's in WW2 or forced them to work until they died. So yes, Soviets did the right thing and kicked our asses. Now we are again taking side with ukros, collective west and other nazis. Nothing learned.
Acthually it's called Ruoska ruotsi
Add some ground gigner to it, and it's actually quite nice. Kinda.
