  • Now is the prime season for picking mushrooms in Finland. On the most popular places, the yummy ones are already picked, but there is till chance to pick up some meaty mushies to put in your stew, freeze for later use or just throw them at waterbirds (heittää vesilintuja)
No kids, don’t go throwing mushrooms at birds, it’s just a saying we have here in Finland, meaning they have gone bad or broken. Or also meaning throwing rocks so they bounce on the water. See, you learn something new every day…
Back to mushrooms. The legend tells that ancient shamans in northern Finland observed the fly agaric eating, hallucinating reindeer and wanted in on the action. So they tried eating the same red mushrooms as the reindeer did. And after who knows how many of them died, they tried to (don’t ask me why or how) drink the urine of them reindeers.
Apparently a small amount of mushroom laced reindeer pee can get the whole tribe high and tripping, and according that same legend, this is how the story of a time travelling, shape shifting, gift giving man riding on a pack of flying reindeer came to be in the first place.
Well, if you look into the "real" story of Santa, you will understand why this one emerged. But, that’s for another time, stay tuned… ;-)

The amanita is not dangerously toxic when prepared well.

oi ihana kanava! Rekisteröidyin! kärpässieni on erittäin hyödyllinen sieni, olen kerännyt niitä kaksi vuotta peräkkäin ja valmistanut ne asianmukaisesti kuivaksi - näin ne toimivat lääkkeenä (masennuslääkkeet, unilääkkeet, energiajuomat, kipulääkkeet). Suosittelen kaikille !!!

I love toasting and eating Amanita's! No, amanita muscaria aren't necessarily poisonous unless you eat a lot of them, and don't decarboxylate the ibotenic acid to muscimol which is very similar in effect to the drug Zolpidem or "Ambein" although I don't reccomend anyone try these mushrooms without extensive research and proper i.d. Ibotenic acid on its own can be neurotoxic at larger doses and can also kill which is why the mushroom is considered dangerous although it's cousins are some of the most deadly mushrooms in the world, take Amanita Phalloids for example, aka the "Death Cap". Looks similar to A.muscaria but has a paper yellow to green cap with no spots usually. Be careful out there! Also Scandinavian countries have the most potent specimen of A. Muscaria which is why it is embedded into the areas folk lore :)

@@InFinlandWeHaveThisThingCalled people have died from doses higher than 30 grams dried. But sought after effects can be reached with around 5 grams when dried and toasted, 3 if you live in siberia or any scandinavian country, with the exception of Alaska, Fly Argaric mushrooms that grow in those more northern, colder regions are much more potent for some reason.
